SPECIAL RELEASE JANUARY 2011
Super huge thanks goes out to Onenote81 for this sweet hook-up!!!
This thick, black, liquid gives the slightest hint of dark brown, at the edges, when backlit. The dark brown head of creamy foam is almost a finger thick. The retention is very good, leaving a surface covering film, all the way to the last drink. The lacing is in short strands which are very nicely sticky.
I'm greeted by lots of notes of smoke and leather. Somewhat unexpected, but not at all unwanted. Below these are large hints of cocoa powder, along with milk and dark chocolates and nice doses of chocolate syrup. Light traces of dark fruit sweetness. Big presence of espresso beans. Light trace of anise. A small hint of cherry-vanilla pipe tobacco. Some very earthy hops notes. Light traces of burnt toast scrapings.
I have to say that this nose is much more complex than I'd anticipated.
A huge assault of roasted malts and cocoa powder. Loads of smoke. Tons of coffee and espresso notes. A good deal of bakers chocolate. Light hints of vanilla and dark fruits. Earthy hop notes are providing some balance to the smokey, dark chocolate and coffee notes. Notes of anise, leather and more earthy hops help give the finish a nicely dry touch.
Once again, this is not nearly as one-dimensional as I'd thought that it might be.
This is medium, not-quite-full, bodied and has a low level of carbonation. The tiny bubbles lend a nice touch of creaminess to the already smooth feel of this one. It's very silky.
This is quite tasty and there is no way that I'd guess that it was 9.75%abv, if I didn't know. Way more complex than expected. I'd be a very happy guy if I were ever able to get more bottles of this one!

22oz bottle from bcrossan (thanks Brian!). Bottled 01/29/2014. Served in a goblet.
Pours a deep, dark chocolate brown with a dense three fingers of sandy tan head. The froth initially has a reverse cascade akin to a nitro pour. It settles oh, so slowly to a thin cap that can be revived with a quick swirl and leaves behind some attractive sheets of lace.
Aromas of dark bakers cocoa, mild char, light coffee, blackened malts and a vague sweetness. Perhaps a little muted but not bad at all.
Flavors lean towards the more roasty and bitter end of the stout spectrum. 70%+ dark cocoa, roasted malts, spent coffee grounds, burnt caramel, a little bit of char and some earth. Very little alcohol precense. There is an ocassional piney/ herbal bitterness that I assume comes from some bittering hops. All in all, this is what I'd expect from an imperial stout with cocoa nibs.
Creamy, medium-yet-weighty feel with carbonation that's a little too far past moderate for my tastes. The finish is quite dry for an imperial stout, laced with bitter notes of espresso and dark chocolate.
My mind isn't blown but I've been wanting to try this for a few years and I'm in no way disappointed. Now I am really stoked to try the bourbon barrel version because I can see this responding well to a barrel treatment. If you enjoy the roasty, bitter stouts then this is certainly worth checking out.
