review of a 2010 bottle
Pours a very dark brown/near black into a sifter. A very slight dark tan head forms and goes away within a minute. Looks a bit dead in the glass. Some slight lacing. In the pour it looks a little thin, as opposed to the motor oil like appearance of some other "big" stouts.
Smell is sweet malt with obvious chocolate notes and I think some toffee in there as well. Pleasant smelling all in all though not as floral as others in the category.
Taste is actually a little better than the smell. Some sweetness upfront then lingers with chocolate notes and finishes with a little bitterness. Reminds of a little of Darkness in the taste.
Mouthfeel is a little too watery for the flavors presented. Not bad per se, but I feel like it could stand to be a little creamier. Actually the taste profile now is making me think alittle more of 10-50 with a lighter body.
The lighter mouthfeel though contributes to a higher drinkability. A very well made and pleasant to drink beer. I'm not so sure it belongs in the upper echelon of "big" imperial stouts, but I have had it many times and enjoyed it thorougly every time.
