Feb. '14 vintage, with major thanks to Eli.
Poured into a Sexual Chocolate teku. Room temperature. Abyssmal black color, with two fingers of rocky mocha head that settled to a ringlet, leaving some soapy lacing on the glass. Dark roasty malts in the nose, distant raw cocoa, some herbal hop bitterness. Taste was surprisingly bitter, roasted dark malts and espresso, toasted grains, char, raw cocoa was present but quite muted, herbal and citrusy hops. This was really a let-down. Basically a plain stout, and pretty homebrewy, which is mostly the impression I've gotten from all of Foothills' beers thus far. Really neither sexual nor chocolate. Body was medium, mouthfeel thin, bitter and somewhat harsh, well, far from smooth anyway. The higher ABV was on the subdued side at least. I was glad to have gotten to try this, but it was a major disappointment.

Pours ebony with 3 fingers of effervescent brown head. Slightly vicious look to this, Good lacing & average head retention

S: Dark chocolate, faint coffee & some boozeyness & dark fruit once warm

T: Coffee, charred grain & dark chocolate up front. Chocolate & coffee blend well as this warms, vanilla & charred wet grain mingle in as well, plus a bit of licorice. Finishes dry with charred grain, dark cherry & herbal hops

MF: Medium bodied & somewhat assertive carbonation, smooths out over time, becomes fairly slick & warming

Drinks very easy, ABV is concealed nicely. I enjoyed this one, not the best out there, but one I would buy on a regular basis if possible, reminds me a lot of Victory at Sea, I'm sure the barrel aged version is even tastier

Finally found this beer on tap at Appalachian Vintner (Asheville); hard to find considering that I live in the Carolinas not so far from the brewery.

Black and opaque with a fairly durable tan head that leaves streaks of sticky lacing on the glass.

Coffee, chocolate and dark roasted malts in the nose. Sightly floral too.

A bit of hops show up upon tasting, putting a spicy tome on the chocolate and dark malt base. Sweet up front, balanced mid-taste, and mild/moderate bitterness in the finish and aftertaste. The aftertaste from this very flavorful ale is quite durable and features both chocolate and malts.

O: slightly disappointing, but very high expectations, so clearly recommended.

Review #200. Had on tap tonight (4/5/10) at Churchkey in Washington, DC. This was the 2009 SC and was served in a 10 oz. snifter.

a - Pours a dark brown with one finger of brown head and nice lacing and froth.

s - Smells of cocoa, sweet chocolate and malts, roasted malts, and maybe some dark fruit. As it warms up, got a little coffee as well.

t - Tastes of bitter chocolate up front, followed up cocoa, roasted malts. As it warms up maybe a little vanilla and dark fruit.

m - Medium body and low carbonation, very smooth and creamy. Very easy to drink.

d - Overall I thought this was a great beer. I've had 09 and 10 SC and think the 09 is much better. I think the time on it lets the hops fade and lets the chocolate and some other flavors like the dark fruit come out more. For 9.75% ABV this is very drinkable and I can't wait to try my bottles of 2010 SC with some time on them.

Big thanks to JR for being my regular hook-up with this one. I've had this a few times, including once in growler format at RBWG, but I've never taken the time to write any notes. Shared with Nate & Bryna - served in a Darkness snifter. Bottle #525/1000 from the 2010 release.

A - Pours with a finger of dark tan foam that dissipates to a thin ring. Some spotty lace is left clinging to the sides of the glass. The body is black with some glints of brown at the fringes of the glass.

S - Roasted malts, chocolate cake, molasses, dark fruits, and caramel candy. I don't get much of the espresso mentioned on the bottle. This takes a little while to warm up, and I expected more intense chocolate (given the name).

T - The taste is quite similar, but some earthy espresso bitterness pops up along with a nice multi-grain toast malt character that imparts a bit of char. Very well balanced, but surprisingly subtle.

M - This is a little thin for an RIS, although it wasn't far off considering the sub-10% ABV. Carbonation was a little zestier and grittier than I prefer. Finishes chewy & sticky.

D - Since the bottle was split three ways, this went very fast. I could definitely have used another pour, but c'est la vie! Doesn't get cloying at all, which is a welcome surprise.

The smell/taste are closer to 4.25 each, so I slightly fudged (no pun intended) the scores to convey that in the overall assessment. This is a very good and enjoyable stout that seems to be slightly overrated due to rarity and local hype.

I made a point of drinking this fresh to fully experience the chocolate character, but if you're expecting ST Choklat (which I dislike) you will be a bit disappointed. Nate mentioned that some think this is better on draft - I can see that being the case if it improves the feel.

January 2012 Release

Thanks to my mother-in-law for saving this one to share with me on Easter.

A: Pours an opaque yet clear jet black in color with some light amounts of visible carbonation and some light to moderate dark brown, amber, and cola colored highlights. The beer has a half finger tall creamy dark tan head that slowly reduces to a small patch of extremely thin film and a very thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of dark chocolate over the top of roasted malts. There are some very light hints of anise and dark fruit but the primary aroma is that of the chocolate.

T: Upfront there is a light amount of dark roasted malts that is quickly overtaken by the strong flavors of dark unsweetened chocolate (like the bars you get that are 60%+ pure cacao). There are some very light hints of anise and coffee. Very light amounts of bitterness that does not linger for too long.

M: Just shy of heavy bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth and creamy.

O: Very easy to drink and very enjoyable - the alcohol is very well hidden and there is a wonderful complexity to the balance. Overall the beer is well balanced by being neither too sweet nor too bitter. Very excited to finally review this one.

I received a pity bottle because I couldn't go to the release due to a huge snowstorm. I brought the bottle to a recent tasting to spread the love around.

2010 release. Beer is black with a thick brown head made up of medium and large bubbles.

Aroma is sweet with some chocolate in there. Beer is medium in body and has some roast character at the back. There is a bitterness from the chocolate I assume, really creamy and consistent palate presence. Really smooth, finishes cleanly. Very awesome.

2011 Vintage

A: Pours a deep black with a very nice brown/khaki colored head. Great head retention and lacing that forms all around glass. Really nice looking beer.

S: Something a bit different about the aroma that I can't quite put my finger on. It is slightly astringent, with a good bit of roasted/charred dark malt and a bit of chocolate.

T: Wow, extremely roasty. The roasted malt really dominates the flavor profile, really don't get as much chocolate as I was expecting/hoping. There is a little bit of milk chocolate in the mid-palate which comes across slightly creamy.

M: Medium bodied, on the creamier side, no sign of alcohol at all.

O: Really not very chocolaty. Not a bad stout, but seems rather basic. A bit of a let down based on the hype around it.

27/1000 2010 Vintage thanks to kbutler1! Had this side by side with ORF.

Poured into a wine shaped snifter.

pours a light tan head that fades down fast. Color is a deep brown, pretty much black.

Aroma: Deep rich chocolate, reminds me of Belgian chocolate. Rich and roasted malts. Light coffee. Not a big hop profile noticeable.

Taste: Tons of chocolate and again, it reminds me of Belgian chocolate. Roasted malts. Light grassy hops. Some coffee flavors. Basically, just a big chocolate stout.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, creamy, and velvety. Decent carbonation with a full body. Ends roasted and dry.

Overall, this is a decent beer, but I think it is a little hyped up. Maybe it would be better with some time on it, but fresh it is nothing stunning. Still, I am really glad I got to try this one.

My girlfriend and I opened this bottle after our Valentine's Day dinner. Poured into a tulip glass.

A: Deep dark black with a very dark brown upper edge. Fluffy, rocky and full tan head. Nice retention cap and big sticky lacing along the glass wall. Great looking beer.

S: Astringent oak, char, slight smoke, dark chocolate and even some faint coffee beans towards the back. It smells nice but all the aromas don't blend very well together. The initial pungent oak-bitter aroma sticks throughout.

T: Well, I hate to say it but this is all hype. Again the initial bitterness of its aggressive hopping (85 IBUs) is still present over a year later in the bottle. Oak, dark malt and more roast come through. There's a nice diversity of flavor but it's not as smooth and easy drinking like others in the style. This is very chaotic in its structure, not very balanced.

M: Slick, smooth and creamy. Nicely carbonated, it feels good in the mouth. Quite dry on the finish though, perhaps from the bitterness?

This wasn't bad by any means although it's nothing world class or even at the top of the Russian Imperial Stout style. And where the hell was the chocolate? There were good amounts of different flavors but they were too choppy, and unbalanced. I have the barrel-aged version which I hear great things about, let's hope that one is a bit better.

February 2010 release bottle #536/1000. Enjoyed with Slatetank and Kegatron. Poured into a snifter, this brew appears black in color with a dark brown head about a finger strong. The cap recedes to just a lacing across the top with leggy lacework sticking to the glass. When held to the light some clarity is seen around the edges with lighter brown and some reddish hues. A swirl revives the cap back to a finger's strength.

The smell of this brew is dark and fruity like raisins mixed with estery alcohol inclusion. This is a bit of a surprise considering this is suppose to be "sexual chocolate." More smells reveal roasted malt that comes across like a scent of chocolate coupled with tangy alcohol aspects. Some more chocolate indications are present minorly reminiscent of cocoa batter as the brew warms up. Hops seem to be present with a fruity inclusion that accents the alcohol's tangy esters. Overall quite a tangy smelling offering that is dark and fruity.

The taste is bitter roasted grains, lightly charred with raisins and alcohol. Bitter semisweet chocolate is present along with estery alcohol that is quite tangy. There is a minor note of coffee present with lots of roasted elements. The tangy inclusion seems a bit like citrus coffee beans. Much more fruited in flavor than I was expecting. The aftertaste is roasty with chocolate and coffee bitterness.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest level of carbonation. It is quite tangy with alcohol and fruity hops intermingled. It is possibly more tangy and fruited than it is chocolaty which is surprising to me. Regardless it is excessively drinkable. As the brew evolved in my glass it took on a bit of a vinous, maybe even port-like quality. Overall a solid offering, one to seek out for sure.

On tap at Wine 101 in Wake Forest.

Pours pitch black with a big cappuccino head that has great retention. The nose is rich, chocolaty, and roasty. The flavor is also rich and chocolaty as well as roasty and coffee-like. The finish offers some faint alcohol phenols. The mouthfeel is a little thin, but the carbonation is just right.

This is smooth, drinkable, and very enjoyable. The mouthfeel could be a little fuller, but overall it's warm, delicious, and very enjoyable. It's worth checking out.

A big thank you to drabmuh for sharing this at my last tasting.

A: Near black, good head and lacing.

S: Enticing aromas of roasted malt with hints of chocolate.

T: Very tasty. A beautifully balanced big stout. A slight hop character in the finish adds another level of complexity to this tasty brew. There is less chocolate in the flavor than the name suggests, but subtle hints of bittersweet chocolate make this a pleasure to drink.

M: Crisp carbonation, great feel. ABV masked well.

D: Yes please, may I have another. I seriously need to go to the release next year, provided that I don't get snowed in again.

Just got done watching 4th of July fireworks and eating ice cream and felt like it was time to open something special. 2008 vintage, bottle number 200 of 500. Poured from a 22oz bottle into my Portsmouth tulip. poured a thick pitch black color with a thin mocha head. The head faded to a thin ring around the edge of the glass after a few minutes and left just a hint of lacing.

The aroma has a bold dark chocolate and cocoa flavor to it. Some roasted malts and a hint of dark fruit are present as well. Nice chocolaty aroma to it overall, not the most complex imperial stouts on the nose, but represents it's name very well.

The taste has a big dark and bitter chocolate flavor to it. It also has a pretty strong burnt and roasted flavor with some smokiness to it as well. The finish has a dry, bitter, burntness to it that lingers on the palate. The chocolate is really the showcased flavor overall though, and thankfully it's a very good chocolate flavor. Excellent tasting beer overall.

The mouthfeel is thick and creamy, while carbonation is on the lower side. Great mouthfeel and just how I like my imperial stouts. Drinkability is good, I really liked the dark, bitter, chocolate flavors as well as the burnt, smokiness it had. Would have paired great with the ice cream I just had. Excellent beer overall.

Thanks to Exiled for sharing this bottle. This is a beer I have wanted to try for a long time. 2010 vintage.

The beer pours black with a tan head. The aroma is roasted malt and chocolate, but I also get a little bit of tart cherries. The beer smells like it may be infected.

The taste confirms that an infection is at work here. I get a lot of tart dark fruit with some roasted malt, chocolate and coffee. I think the base beer may be good, but the infection really makes things taste funky.

The carbonation is about right for the beer, but the mouthfeel is all wrong. The beer is very thin and almost watery, which I assume is caused by the infection.

Very disappointing overall.

Poured from the bottle into a snifter glass.

A real thick and perfect creamy tan head forms, but it is quite large nearly three fingers tall. Whipped up cocoa light texture and settles very slowly. Strangely when forming it seemed even darker. Body color seems classic black walnut and dark but with some little close inspection it appears to have some red in there strangely when held up to light. Nice looker of a stout.

Real nice soft grain aroma. Subtle brown sugar sweetness, dark chocolate, a good mix of bitter and sugar. Hints toward some berried fruit tartness slightly just a tad. Quite solid even a little bit varied.

Palate is a bit different than expected. Bitter. Noticeably. Lots of dry grains and roast char on the finish, but a big blasting pine hop bitterness creeps throughout. A decent palate feel but has some wet skim milk and slick character. There's a bit of coffee like roast towards the finish, but it quickly gets buried in some almost acidic grains. There's quite a bit of sour quality to this, but luckily not too out of control, but it lingers. Roast character is nearly hot and piping, then this acidic coating just takes over, like real acidic coffee, and thick hop oil resin that permeates.

Overall this brings the roast and char, but there's some acidic almost vinegar quality that just overloads and ruins the experience. Would really like some chocolate flavor on this and doesn't really get it done. It's char profile is also identical to its porter and reminds me much of it, which is another beer from Foothills I just don't care for. Just a bit too much bitter, acrid, and oily. Doesn't come off quite right.

On tap at ACBF, 2 samples, at a quiet table, reviewed from notes.

Pours the anticipated black and oily, under a dark tan head, leaving plenty of dark tan lace. Rich, bold and tasty stout. I get notes of coconuts, bourbon, rich chocolate, cocoa, vanilla, dark malts via the nose and tongue. Over the top bitter/sweet, complex and full of RIS goodness. Seek out and enjoy

A- Sexual Chocolate is a very black beer that is black as can be and is black. The black is underneath a mocha colored head up above that settles into a slight cap, not so clingy lace.

S- Smell is on the roasty side, it's a big ol' IRS but I smell an infection coming. Besides that roast, chocolate, hoppy appeal, licorice, anise, you know what it is.

T- I did not get the infection that much. It's there and will grow, thank god we caught it now! Sexy Chocolate goes from fudge chocolate, roasty malts, some char, a bit of brownie and dark fruit going into infection.

M- It's a big stout, it's real smushy, glugging down the track. Kinda muddy. For a RIS it works, the infection casts a tangy after taste that is bleh and the carb is there.

O- Really glad I tried this beer, and Im glad it did not get any older. I've been running into mad infection issues with craft stouts recently and it's really turned me off of the style completely.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter. February 2012 bottle date.

Appearance - Black body. Big khaki head. Nice thick collar. Eternal surface wisps.

Smell - Roasted malt. Coffee roast. Hint of grassy hops. A little bit of chocolate.

Taste - Dark chocolate. Bitter coffee. Again, it has a hint of grassy hops. Finishes with a very bitter dark chocolate and coffee malt flavor.

Mouthfeel - Very bitter. Medium body. Not very heavy or boozy.

Overall - Well made stout. It isn't all that exciting, but it's tasty.

Pours into my 25cl tulip glass with a one finger thick, brown tinged head despite a vigorous pour. This is simply very black in color and completely opaque. A huge roasted aroma is noticeable as I pour this beer and a more focused inspection of the aroma yields a nose that has a strong, dark malt accent, with lots of roast character and even a touch of sharp burnt aromas. Towards the finish it reminds me a bit of burnt prunes, so much so that it almost seems like it is getting oxidized; this seems a bit weird to me for a beer this big and this young, but it wasn't bottle conditioned, still I think it is most likely an artifact of the rich malt and not oxidation.

This beer is quite thick feeling as it hits my tongue, quickly though there is a huge roast character that provides lots of burnt acidity to the beer and, which ultimately offsets the thickness and even goes to thinning the beer out a bit more than I would like in an Imperial Stout. A chip full of bean-dip helps to accentuate a sweetness in the beer that helps to accent a touch of chocolate flavor that was lacking in this beer previously (the aroma is fairly light on any chocolate notes though). As the beer warms up it loses the acrid, burnt, roast and acid notes; smoothing out a bit and becoming more mellow. The chocolate is a bit more pronounced now and though still sharp with lots of roast-bitterness, it is much more tasty than it was at first.

This is one of those beers that really needs to breath and warm up before being consumed. I had almost written this off; some savory food paired with it seems to have helped the flavor nuances a bit as well.

Love the name (reminds me of 'Coming to America') and love the label. Could be called "Sexy Mutha Ucker".

Of course, a dark pour like liquid raisins. Some reddish/purple around the edge. Good, tan lacing up top, but didn't stick around too long. Probably served too cold.
Aroma is chocolate, deep roasted malt, not so much coffee as toffee and molasses. Dark banana hints.
Taste is groovy. It's a nice blend of chocolate, coffee, dark plum, light tobacco and smoke. A bit chewy. Better as it warms, more roasted malt comes out. Dark chocolate, not sweet. Doesn't have quite the bite as some RIS, kinda wish it did...but this is very nice.

I have to thank my friend Paul for sharing a bottle of this with me. While the legend is greater than the beer itself, this was still a top-notch RIS. The cocoa nibs impart a deep, dark chocolate flavor that's also earthy like a cocoa bean. The malts provide an array of chocolate cookie, graham cracker, toffee, bread crust, and plum notes. The body is thick like most, but there's enough bitterness to keep this from getting too sweet. The hops also add a pleasant, mild citrus taste, which aid drinkability, though this is a tough beer to do anything with but slowly sip... but I suppose that's ok.

At Churchkey in DC, a 10 oz snifter for $9 of the 2009 vintage. First time I've ever seen anything from Foothills in DC/Nova/MD area.

This experience with the beer wasn't all that impressive. The beer is served in a snifter that is about 4/5 near black, opaque liquid with a large, dense foamy tan head that hangs around the duration of the beer and leaves thick sheets of lacing. Aroma is mild blend of expected roast malt, cocoa, milk chocolate, slightly powdery. Carbonation is very low throughout and body is generally silky and smooth, but marginally thin for the style and slightly watery in the finish. Flavor is one dimensional, natural milk chocolate and cocoa powder with a mild sweet malt body. Little to no hop, fruit, char or alcohol presence resulting in an overall lack of balance. I'm waiting to try a bottle of the 2010 release and have greatly diminished expectations for that, but I'm still holding out hope that will be a little more complex, interesting and nuanced. However if this keg was representative of what everyone else has sampled for this beer, then for me this is easily one of the most undeservedly over hyped and sought after beers I've tried.

edit: Reading other reviews from the same night it's like we had two different beers. I wonder if I had a dirty glass or...I don't know, something seems off. Wouldn't be first time that's happened to me there.

Poured on-tap in a 12 ounce vase, the beer is jet black, creamy and thick, with a dark brown, low profile head. Nose of dark, bitter cocoa nibs, sweet cream, and earthy highlights. Flavors are heavily roasted and bitter cocoa forward, with a creamy, smooth, rich cream overlay, and a chocolate and rich molasses backbone. Smooth and heavy in mouth, with a bitter mocha and cream aftertaste. The finish is smooth, with a bittersweet linger. Bravo! This is a damn tasty brew!

Poured dark brown with a decent head. Good retention. Smells primarily of cocoa and some smooth malt. Not dusty smelling as some cocoa smelling beers are and not overly sweet. The taste is also all about the cocoa and a nice backbone of chocolate liqueur. Not overly sweet, but nice deep chocolate flavors without any waxiness and a bit of alcohol comes through as well. Enough malt to keep things firm and together, but there is plenty of pleasant bitterness to stop things from getting too sweet. Somewhat of a one-note beer, but done quite well. I like this a good deal more than the Southern Tier Choklat. Mouthfeel is smooth and somewhat sharp. It could have used a touch more creaminess. Nice to see a Southern brewer hitting it big. This is nice beer, but I'm not sure there should be a frenzy over it.
