Finally trying this longtime want. Traded by FourKicks. Bottle 143/1000 Feb. 2010 vintage.

Pours a sexy shade of black with a nice tan head, retains well as a thick cap eventually and leaves good lacing.

Roast/coffee forward in the scent, some chocolate and dark fruit.

Taste brings roasted malt and espresso on intensely, chocolate is there but seems a bit faded (age probably.) Caramel and lots of dark fruit easily noticeable, some smoke.

Mouthfeel felt a bit weak and thin, there is a bit of booze but not a bother.

A very good stout, the roastiness took some time to get used to but I wound up enjoying that element alot. I imagine this may be quite a different beer when fresh.

Poured into a 7oz glass snifter.

Smell dominates of fig and dark fruit. Slight hint of bakers chocolate as it warms. A finger and a half worth of mocha head. Lacing is evident.

Taste is of smoke and peat. Teriyaki and meat coincide. This beer is chewy for all the wrong reasons. The smoke and meat dominate my mouth and flavor profile. It was hard to finish my small pour.

Honestly this was a one time experience. I wouldn't drink it again if it was free. Meat filled boring garbage.

February 2010, thanks to Chico1985. 143/1000. Review #666, heh.

A- Pitch black into an oversized wine glass. Mocha colored head grows to a nice size and retains decently. Tons of thick lace on the glass.

S- Very, very intensely roasted up front. Cocoa comes into play nicely as well as some smoke, leather feel.

T- Roast malt forward again, one of the roastiest beers I have had. Some vanilla, caramel, coffee, tart dark fruit, cherry, raisin and smoke. You can sense some of the age.

MF- A bit thin on the body IMO. A somewhat creamy feel with high carbonation. Slight tartness.

A first I was skeptical but it grew on me with time and warmth. A good complexity opens up and it ends up very nice.

Bottle from crackedkettle, 2008 vintage.
Look: the beer pours dark black color with a medium brown head
Smell: Roasted malts, coffee, caramel, sweet molasses, hops and very very light chocolate.
Taste: The taste follows the nose. Malts, old coffee, caramel and very light chocolate but also some red fruits. The beer has a sharp bittersweet aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Thin and watery body, medium carbonation
Overall: Highly overrated. Old coffee with almost no chocolate. Thin and unbalanced. Tons of better beers in this style

Note's from Captain Lawrence Rosso Batch 3 release / tasting:

Foothills SC 2011 – a = 5, dark as night, beautiful head that hangs around and swirling the glass rebuilds it on command. Beautiful tan head. Smell has great roasted malt and chocolate smell…everything I look for in a stout. Real good. Taste follows the nose…this is awesome awesome awesome. Roasted dark chocolate malts. All day. Smooth mouth. This is solid, thick, heavy, full bodied…great carbonation, chocolate. Awesome.

4.5 - 4 - 4.5 - 4.5 - 4.5

a - filled my duck rabbit snifter. hard pour yeilds black liquid with mocha chocolate frothy head. pretty milky and bubbly. like a milk stout, only darker...but definitely on the creamy milky side.

s - roasted chocolate malts.

t - flavor comes in with HUGE roasted malts after a hint of chocolate. then it turns bitter on the exit. clean and crisp, but more roasty than chocolatey. once a few sips in, the chocolate comes in much more than the bitterness and roast. it is really smooth and even. tastes nice.

m - coolling and bready. crisp and a bit brisk. silky and light for such a bold brew.

o - overall, i agree that this beer gets hyped quite a bit, but that being said, it *is* a solid example of the style and the chocolate is rather nice and tasty. bear in mind that chocolate imperial stouts are all the rage these days...they weren't always. i find this beer to be worthy even in today's beer market, but the way people go nuts for stuff, it is understandable that many folks were let down on this beer...after all, it is just beer and although tasty with a nice hint of gourmet chocolate...drinking this beer will not give you super powers. delicious like a marshal zhukov.

Thanks a TON to awalk1227 for providing this in the most recent CIF, wasn't expecting any beer for sure! Special Release: January 2011.

A: Deep black pour with a large, foamy, brown head. The retention is phenomenal, leaving a thick cap atop the beer, readying the lips for the sexy, chocolately onslaught.

S: Dark chocolate, molasses, hops, smoky tones, and some booziness are all noted.

T: Chocolate and the smokiness start off the taste, followed by a similar sweetness to what I considered molasses in the smell. Huge roasty aftertaste. Some hops really balance it out well. Didn't really get any coffee in the smell, but it is obviously apparent on the backend of this. A warming alcohol presence finishes the beer off.

MF: Heavy with a slight creaminess. Carbonation seems a tad low though.

O: A really good beer. The balance between the more harsh chocolate, hops, coffee, and alcohol provides for an evolving taste you will enjoy to the last drop.

A: Black as night with a fair amount of tan head.

S: Smoke, coffee, some roasted malts, more smoke.

T: Did I mention smoke? Wow, this is smokier than some Smoked Porters I have had. It had way too much imitation smoke flavor for my liking. Where is the chocolate?

M: Slightly oily and slick.

O: This thing should not have the word "Chocolate" in the title it should be Sexual Smoke. There was very little sweetness.

Super huge thanks goes out to Onenote81 for this sweet hook-up!!!
Review #700(!!!)

This thick, black, liquid gives the slightest hint of dark brown, at the edges, when backlit. The dark brown head of creamy foam is almost a finger thick. The retention is very good, leaving a surface covering film, all the way to the last drink. The lacing is in short strands which are very nicely sticky.

I'm greeted by lots of notes of smoke and leather. Somewhat unexpected, but not at all unwanted. Below these are large hints of cocoa powder, along with milk and dark chocolates and nice doses of chocolate syrup. Light traces of dark fruit sweetness. Big presence of espresso beans. Light trace of anise. A small hint of cherry-vanilla pipe tobacco. Some very earthy hops notes. Light traces of burnt toast scrapings.
I have to say that this nose is much more complex than I'd anticipated.

A huge assault of roasted malts and cocoa powder. Loads of smoke. Tons of coffee and espresso notes. A good deal of bakers chocolate. Light hints of vanilla and dark fruits. Earthy hop notes are providing some balance to the smokey, dark chocolate and coffee notes. Notes of anise, leather and more earthy hops help give the finish a nicely dry touch.
Once again, this is not nearly as one-dimensional as I'd thought that it might be.

This is medium, not-quite-full, bodied and has a low level of carbonation. The tiny bubbles lend a nice touch of creaminess to the already smooth feel of this one. It's very silky.

This is quite tasty and there is no way that I'd guess that it was 9.75%abv, if I didn't know. Way more complex than expected. I'd be a very happy guy if I were ever able to get more bottles of this one!

2011 vintage growler poured into a Duvel tulip in February. The pour isn't as much fun without the swank bottle logo, but it's a good-looking dark brew with a finger or so of frothy tan head that leaves a fair amount of lacing.

The nose is markedly more roasted and burnt than the 2010 vintage. Some dark chocolate provides a bit of sweetness, but it's mainly dark malts, fresh ground coffee beans. It smells kinda dry and earthy, and it proves to be just that. Just barely enough chocolate to justify the beer's moniker. Suggestive nickname aside, it's basically a straightforward, big and roasty stout, and a fine one at that. As it dries out at the swallow, some earthy and bitter elements assert themselves.

Overall impression: Solid, not great imperial stout that's worth a try.

Review from notes. 2011 edition, graciously shared by thecaptain073:

Dark brown, light khaki head, sparse lacing. Holy smokiness! There's a quite a bit of smoked malt in the nose, charred wood, tons of roast and a bit of licorice. Taste is right on par. I don't think I've had a more smokey IS. Lots of charred malts, very woody, very light chocolate present, but can't get past this smokey flavor. It's not bad, but odd and unexpected. Very earthy tasting, hoppy, some anise, licorice, and more dark bitter chocolate than the nose let on. Very interesting, very dry. Needs maybe a bit more sweetness to round things out. Mouthfeel is medium-full, perfect carbonation. Sexy Chocolate? More like Sexy Smoke! Good overall, but again, needs a bit of sweetness to balance the smoke.

2010 vintage

A- Dark black in color, a dark chocolatey colored head. There is pretty decent lacing

S- Pretty light on the nose. I get some malt, chocolate, and some acidic coffee notes. A touch of nuttiness perhaps.

T- I get a lot of hops initially, and some touches of burnt coffee and chocolate. Not very prominent flavor for what I expected. Not as chocolatey as I imagined.

M- The body is real solid, as is the carbonation. The flavor just isn't there though. It's a little bland.

O- I have another bottle to revisit this at some point, but overall I was slightly let down. My brother sent me a hand bottle of this last year and it was much more chocolatey and thick. Maybe I over hyped this beer in my head..

2011 bottle courtesy of a trade with jpmclaug. Thanks Jason! Poured into a New Belgium globe as part of a blind 8 impy stout tasting.

A - Pours an opaque, near black color with a thin cappuccino head that leaves behind a thick collar and nice webs of lacing on the glass.

S - Sweet and a bit sugary. Bit of booze and milk chocolate. Overall pretty light in aroma, especially compared with the rest of the group. Really didn't get much out of this one.

T - Smokey, burnt, a bit astringent. Dark roast, burnt toast, dark chocolate on the finish.

M - Fizzy, lively, very burnt feel overall, medium bodied with medium carbonation as well.

O - Good stout - not especially complex however. Would like to see this a bit more nuanced with flavors. This is my second go around with Sexy Chocolate, unfortunately, this reinforced my initial thoughts...think hype builds this one up a bit. In our blind taste, this was a middle of the pack beer. Much prefer the barrel aged version of this.

Pours jet black with a very light 2 inch head. The retention on this is decent but not impressive.

Smell - this threw me for a loop. Very smoky! Smoky chocolate, smoky malt, and tiny hint of alcohol.

Taste - follows the nose to a T. Tons of smoky malt and chocolate. Very smooth. Lingering of some smoky malt in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - simple and easy to drink. Not too much over powering. Very smoky.

Overall - its good but not great. I enjoyed it but its too much like the Alaskas smoked Porter and that's more available than this.

Thanks for the tick oglmcdgl, 2010 vintage into a tulip.

A- Sexual Chocolate is a very black beer that is black as can be and is black. The black is underneath a mocha colored head up above that settles into a slight cap, not so clingy lace.

S- Smell is on the roasty side, it's a big ol' IRS but I smell an infection coming. Besides that roast, chocolate, hoppy appeal, licorice, anise, you know what it is.

T- I did not get the infection that much. It's there and will grow, thank god we caught it now! Sexy Chocolate goes from fudge chocolate, roasty malts, some char, a bit of brownie and dark fruit going into infection.

M- It's a big stout, it's real smushy, glugging down the track. Kinda muddy. For a RIS it works, the infection casts a tangy after taste that is bleh and the carb is there.

O- Really glad I tried this beer, and Im glad it did not get any older. I've been running into mad infection issues with craft stouts recently and it's really turned me off of the style completely.

A bottle from the 2010 release sent up shortly after the release by stoutfiend27. Thanks, bro. Poured this into two snifters straight after taking the bottle from my beer/wine cooler at 55F.

Deep and opaque brownish black in color, brighter dark brown is around the edges in the light. The body is topped by creamy milk chocolatey espresso cream head that lingers for a solid 5 minutes as it slowly dissipates. Lacing is slight and only shows up intermittently.

The aroma is phenomenal. This is all imperial stout while being fully chocolate stout at the same time. Roasty notes, leather, come in up from and give way to hints of tobacco in the background. Bitter chocolate from the cocoa nibs comes through fully and dominates in the finish. The flavor is very similar to, though far more leathery than the aroma. I compare it to the leathery character of HOTD Adam. However, there is more. That chocolatey bitterness comes through with roasted malts to round out the flavor.

Creamy and fluffy and light on the palate, this beer doesn't feel like nearly 10% ABV. The flavors are intense, and I can see that this is a beer that someone would either love or hate. I love the proportions of leather and tobacco, such underused flavors in imperial stouts. Great stuff, to be sure.

Poured into a ccb snifter. Pours dark black with a 1 finger head that lasts seconds. A thin ring forms around the glass with very little lacing. Aroma isn't bad, coffee and chocolate all the way. The taste is where there is a problem. Chocolate then coffee then a really off taste, something I'd never like to taste again. I don't like to throw around claims of infection but if this isn't infection what the heck are they putting in their beer. Very disappointing for a very hyped brew.

Big thanks to the BA at the last NOVA tasting for providing this brew to the group.

Poured a very nice black color with no light pearing through. Head formed great and was a melted chocolate color. The aroma was roasty and was matched with a thick sweet smell. I enjoyed the aroma and looked forward to this tasting part! The brew has a nice medium body to it that pushes the sweet roasty flavors through. It reminded me a lot of NEB Imperial Stout Trooper. Overall a enjoyable brew that I would trade for depending on the request. Will hopefully make it to the next release to grab some my self.

A 2010 bottle from a trade that I wish I hadn't done. Booerns.

A- two nice big fingers of mocha colored head from a stiff pour that holds for a bit the settles to leave a thin tan skin on top. Black in color with super dark brown edges.

S- oh no! Well this doesn't smell right at all. It shows the signs of a pretty bad infection on the brewers part. Burnt malts and acrid coffee mixed with cherries and rotten fruit.

T- off. There's some old fruit and again old coffee. Burnt toast and funk with a long lasting dirty tart finish, like a cherry with white pepper on it.

M- on the thin side of medium and a bit overly carbed.

O- well this is not a good beer, nope not at all. I'm glad I opened it now rather then waiting till winter. Who knows how bad it would have been by then.

I poured this from a 22oz brown bomber bottle into two 14 oz glasses (thanks for the hookup Gilly!).

A= This ale poured a deep black/brown color with a 3/4" tan head. The head lasted a good while and left some nice stickage behind on my glass.

S= Rich dark malts, roasted grain, and some light chocolate notes in the nose. Not much alcohol evident.

T= Started off with a kiss of caramel and chocolate sweetness before the roasted malt and coffee notes took over. Hop bitterness was restrained and hop flavor was earthy. Overall leaned well to the malty side of things though. Finished less sweet than it started due to the dryness of the roasted flavors.

MF= Full bodied but not overly viscous. Carbonation was spot on.

D= A very drinkable RIS that I liked quite a lot. I don't know if it deserves the extent of the cult following it has but its a damn good beer all the same.

Poured up black in color with a tan head. Pretty decent head retention given the style.

Aroma was dominated by bitter roast malt with strong notes of coffee and a hint of chocolate, a bit of smokiness.

Taste followed suit with a light sweetness with the smoke presence at the beginning followed by a strong dose of coffee flavors and burnt malts.

Mouthfeel was medium bodied, but pretty smooth.

Overall, it is quite tasty, and I enjoyed drinking it, but I really don't think it's anything to wait in line for or something.

2011 bottle split with airohead2001.

A: The beer pours a dark, dark brown with a 1 finger cappuccino colored head that has moderate retention and a bit of lacing.

S: Well, it doesn’t smell bad, but there’s not much there at all. I get a little bit of earthiness/nuttiness, and If I search really, really deep I think I can convince myself there’s some milk chocolate.

T: The start is sweet, lactic, burnt and kind of gross. The middle has a bit of coffee/chocolate, although the chocolate is not prominent at all. The finish is actually like that of a pretty good imperial stout with a nice balance of hops and roasted malt. It’s too bad the up front flavor kind of throws off the overall experience.

M: A bit thin for my likely of this style, with appropriate carbonation. The aftertaste is better than the overall taste.

O: Overall, I wasn’t very impressed with this beer. The chocolate was not nearly as smooth or well-done as I had hoped. Across the bored it was fairly bland and uninteresting. Hopefully the barrel-aged version is better…I hope to crack that one sometime soon.

Let's go hawks! Thanks glazeman.

Appearance is nothing too special - black with a one finger light tan head that fades to a nice film of bubbles.

Smell is nonexistent. I get nothing. Reminds me of a Guinness...

Taste is the best part for sure - harsh coffee roasts through out are the most dominant flavor. There is a little bit of chocolate and dark fruits as well.

Mouthfeel is too thin.

Overall, this beer is thin, bland, and way overrated.
