Picked a bottle of this up at Lighthouse Beer & Wine due to some recommendations as I was passing through the area. Thanks to the guys in the South-Atlantic forum for recommending this really delicious porter.

A - Dark brown, ruby red in color. Pours with about 1 finger of light brown head, leaves some lacing. Really good looking porter.

S - I picked up mostly roasted malts and some bourbon. It definitely comes through in this, and I really like it. Alcohol smell, but I believe it's from the bourbon, not from the beer that is only 6% ABV.

T - Nice change of pace from big imperial stouts like KBS that I've been drinking. More subtle flavors, but definitely good roasted character and definitely taste the bourbon barrel. Really imparts a nice bourbon flavor without being overboard. Again, a hint of alcohol as in the smell, but I believe that's mixed in with the bourbon character. I'd describe the overall flavor as a good roasty porter with a nice hit of bourbon. I don't think I'd recommend this to someone who doesn't like the flavor of bourbon.

M - Not a thick body. Fairly light, with plenty of carbonation. No alcohol burn, and leaves a nice aftertaste of roasted notes and bourbon.

O - I think this is a great beer for people who love bourbon and porters. It's nice and light. In other words, it doesn't give you the feeling that you ate a meal like an imperial stout. That's nice sometimes, and obviously what they aimed for with this beer. I could drink this beer anytime. I don't have any problems with this beer, but I feel like there could be room for improvement. As you can see by my rating, however, it's a solid example of a BBA Porter. Would buy again. (1,683 characters)

Great to see this on tap at the Greensboro Mellow Mushroom.Poured into a room temp pint glass a deep dark brown, nearly black except for just a light tinge of ruby,a thinner soapy-like mocha colored head atop.Mild oaky bourbon in the nose along with some burnt toast and dark fruit.Full mellow feel in the mouth, almost cask-like,very nice.Flavors are not over done by the barrel, oak and vanilla flavors at the onset with some dried dark fruit,a light char holds thru until the finish.A great barrel aged beer, not overdone and it fits nicely into the flavor profile, great job here. (579 characters)

Draft at the Saucer and poured into a snifter. Poured a nice black color with a short lived brown head. Moderate lacing throughout the tasting. The bourbon in this comes first in the smell followed by vanilla and chocolate. The taste is a very nice blend of bourbon and vanilla. At first I thought it was a bit sweet but as it warmed it balanced itself. A fantastic beer from Foothills that I will try to get whenever they have it on draft. (440 characters)

Thanks, Beerness!

Very, very dark brown, nearly black, with a large, quickly forming, and very persistent brown head. This leaves thick chunks and ribbons of lace down the glass.

The aroma is probably the most redeeming aspect of this beer, as there isn't much here to write home about. There's mild roast and a little bit of chocolate, There's also quite a bit of mineral, even metallic character.

The flavor is below average. There is very little barrel character. If given this blind, I'd never guess this was a barrel-aged porter. There's very mild chocolate and roast, though there's also quite a bit of metal and minerals. Moderate bitterness, and not particularly drinkable.

Medium bodied with very high carbonation, which isn't appropriate for a beer of this style. Prickly, and about as bad of a mouthfeel as I can imagine for a barrel-aged porter. Infected?

Not a lot of redeeming qualities. (935 characters)

Extremely subtle nose, the head has a richer color than the body, taste is very smooth akin to the porter style, not overwhelming at all but inviting; overall, pretty good but I fear the slight malty nature may be hindered by the bourbon barrel aging process. (259 characters)

Thanks to Pat for the bomber.

This is a superb beer. And it's local...

A: Nice cola-look with a chocolate-milky head. Pretty stuff.

S: Mmmm, sweet bourbon. Some toffee, chocolate, and tons and tons of vanilla and bourbon. A bit woodsy - maybe some earthiness.

T: This is why I like barrel-aged beer! The base beer is a favorite of mine and with the oaky-vanilla its perfect! Toffee, chocolate, tons of vanilla bourbon for a sweet finish.

M: creamy. delicate even. a touch watery but I'm nit-picking.

O: A truly delightful beer. Foothills is my local darling and they continue to impress with this one! (607 characters)

22oz bottle (2013 or 14) served in a Belgian snifter.

Pours dark brown and sits near black and opaque in the glass. Large frothy head is semi-durable and leaves a fairly full coat of lacing on the glass.

Appealing aroma features BBL, dark roasted grains, and dark fruits. Approaches 3.75

Flavor: BBL and fainter dark bread and a hint of vanilla. Too much bourbon flavor in the finish and aftertaste, but then others will find this attractive no doubt. Approaches 4

Drinks big despite the modest 5.8% ABV. (515 characters)

A - Dark chocolate brown with a small milk chocolate head that settled to foam

S - Dark chocolate, caramel, vanilla, and lots of butterscotch from the pappy barrel

T - Roasted chocolate and bitter coffee with light butterscotch. Slight alcoholic booze and oak near the finish. The base beer doesn't seem to stand up to the barrel well which gives it an astringent and boozy bite

M - Medium body with a roasted presence. Slight oak tingle near the finish to it

O - Solid porter but the beer just can't fully stand up to the barrel. It smells great but there is just too much booze and bite in the flavor (606 characters)

Growler shared by kp - thanks!

Pours one shade from black with a one-finger light brown head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of smooth roasted malts with equal amounts of dark chocolate and vanilla aromas.

Tastes very similar to how it smells. Robust roasted malt flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by moderate amounts of dark chocolate flavors. Midway through the sip solid amounts of vanilla and lighter amounts of dry oak flavors make an appearance, carrying through to a moderately bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is OK The thickness is slightly on the thin side with smooth carbonation.

Drinkability is also good. I didn't have a problem finishing my glass and could have another.

Overall I wasn't terribly impressed with this beer as it was slightly on the thin side and the flavors weren't terribly complex. Still, it's a tasty beer that's above average and worth a shot. (930 characters)
