22oz bottle into snifter. Thanks StormKing47!
A: Pours an extra frothy glass of foam that slowly turned into dark chocolate brown liquid beneath a huge rocky film that left thick streaks of lace down the glass.
S: Sweet and boozy notes of bourbon, raisins, caramel, molasses, and vanilla oak barrel. Very rich and decadent smelling for only 6%.
T: Mellow flavors are not as potent as the nose let on. The flavors are sweet with notes for bourbon, vanilla, and caramel, with dark fruits, raisin and molasses in the finish. I get some barrel spice, chocolate, and bitter coffee in the finish. Roasted, toasted malts and a hint of burnt marshmallow comes through as well.
M: Medium-thin body, surprisingly normal (maybe a little high) carbonation for how frothy this beer looks, with a mouthfeel that drinks well but could maybe be a tad chewier.
O: Overall a very enjoyable beer, but given the strong bourbon barrel character, I think a higher alcohol meatier stout would have suited this beer. While I love the flavor, every sip makes me wish the body had a bit more. What’s up with the epic carbonation too? For a second I thought this was going to be infected. Definitely worth checking out though, thanks again Josh!

Poured into a New Belgium goblet. No freshness date.
A- Pours a 99% opaque black color with a 1/2 inch dark tan head that retains well before settling at a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a bubbly side patch of surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves a jagged ring behind.
S- Milk chocolaty nose with a nice dose of oaky astringency. Slightly boozy with vanilla undertones.
T- Flavor kicks in more of that chocolate and some light oak astringency. The chocolate gives way to vanilla which gives way to a slightly charry finish. Mild but noticeable bitterness as per the base beer's usual MO.
M- This is the only place where it's lacking which is what I was afraid of. I find the base beer to be thin even for a porter and this is just about the same. Medium carbonation (which doesn't help things) and a full body.
O- Definitely not one of the best BBA beers of its kind but, for the reasonable price, you get your bourbon barrel fix without breaking your wallet. That and it's an improvement on the regular People's Porter.
