On tap at the Sexual Chocolate Foothills Release, and, as a matter of fact, the first "on tap" brew I've reviewed that I've poured myself!

Appearance: Pours a deep, heavy brown, with a foamy, immaculately-bubbled one-and-a-half finger head of light tan hue. The bubble structure on this one (after an initial half finger fade) is really nice looking. The lacing is similarly nice, doing the whole "ring" thing, sheet-like and firm, bu also thin and delicate. The retention is also above average for the style.

Aroma: Bourbon is dominant, but it's wonderfully smooth, slightly spicy and earthy, very woody. Apparently, this one was aged in 23-year PVW barrels? Though I'm not enough of a bourbon aficionado to probably appreciate that for what its worth, it's nice. It melds well with a nice dose of toasted malts, cocoa being the most prominent note to emerge from the scuffle.

Taste: Fantastic. Sweet malty notes, cocoa and faint coffee, with plenty of residual sugars but also a nice amount of earthy, toasted astringencies, the latter of which meld surprisingly well with the smooth, powerful-but-not-too-intense earthy, woody bourbon notes. Hints of vanilla peek through as well. Very subtle, smooth, and well-balanced.

Mouthfeel: A relative medium-bodied brew, perhaps because it's a typical American porter, perhaps because its bourbon-thinned. It has a very gentle and even mouth, however, with only the slightest effervescence prickle, and plenty of nice, delicate fluff.

Drinkability: A pretty damn solid brew. I really, really liked the People's Porter the first time I tried it (about two months ago), and this is only better. Not much wrong with this one - if you get a chance to try it, definitely give it a shot. It's likely not that much more alcoholic, and it's much more flavorful (which is saying a lot). Highly recommended.

I have held on to this one for a while and figured that it was bourbon weather so I paired it with a family member of the bourbon this was initially aged in. You can definitely smell the boozy bourbon when the bottle was first opened. The bourbon was not as dominant in taste as it was on the nose, but you could tell that there was some bourbon influence. The taste is pretty close to the regular People's Porter, maybe a little more alcohol taste. I get chocolate notes, a little bourbon and some vanilla and some leathery tannin. The beer was not cloying but sweet. It was very tasty over all but did leave a little odd drying flavor on the finish. Nevertheless, one of my all time favorite breweries and I am happy that they have expanded their bottling distribution so we can try more of the special releases. I will say that even though I do love this one and the original People's Porter, I have never been a fan of the much lauded Sexual Chocolate. I guess the difference in an Imperial Stout vs. a Porter.

A - Picked up a growler of this Foothills People's Porter aged in 23 yr old Pappy Van Winkle bourbon barrels at the Charleston Beer Exchange's rare beer Tuesday this week. Pours almost black with dark chocolate syrup highlights and a globby khaki head.

S - The aroma is a little more subdued, but still some oaky, smokey, chocolaty porter comes through.

T - The initial taste has a nice woody bourbon quality to the porter base, additional flavors of vanilla creme brulee, chocolate, smoke, and some spices come through as well. As it warms to room temp, the bourbon notes come through stronger and stronger.

M - Medium bodied, smooth, slightly fizzy carbonation.

I frequently get this beer at the flying saucer in charlotte nc.
Pours a deep dark body with a finger length khaki head.
Smells of vanilla, bourbon, oak, chocolate, raisen, mocha and burnt wood.
Tasted of chocolate, cocoa and some nice moacha mixed with vanilla and sweet herbal hops. It is not nearly as boozy as some beers like dragons milk, it's very smooth and extremely drinkable.
I love this beer and I think it's the best porter I've ever had

New barrels, new lines, new glass. Was very pleased to see the new version on tap for the release today and a glass with lunch while I waited was certainly in order. Consumed on 08/13/2010.

The pour was inky black with no light coming through this one at all, nothing. Small cap of tan edges up the sides of the glass and leaves a small amount of side lacing.

Aroma is very much transformed. Much different then the regular version, or even the previous. Rich notes of vanilla and wood combine with nice roasted malts, leather, and hints of dark fruits that give it a certain twang. This follows perfectly on the flavor as each sip reveals yet another layer to this superb brew. Rich dark cocoa and licroice, vanilla, boubon, and an almost wine barrel like finish combine to give a wonderfully well balanced and smooth beer.

Overall really an outstanding beer, had I not followed it with the baltic it would havebeen the highlight of the day for me.

P: Pours a super dark body with ruby hues and a massive cavernous cap of cappuccino head. Thick bubbly lacing with nice retention.

S: Vivid bourbon aroma swells from the glass and encompasses a base of roasted cocoa, vanilla, toffee, faint caramel and chocolate chip muffins.

T/M: Sweet dark fruits, toffee and milk chocolate strike first then disappear to bitter vanilla biscotti coffee with a follow up of cocoa and bourbon. Taste of salty caramel, slightly smoked wood chips and cinnamon in the finish. Crisp moderate body with a semi dry finish.

O: Bourbon barreling is exhibited well in this robust porter. Complex flavors that change throughout the session. Easy drinking for the Borbon flavoring and a nice crisp feel. A great porter for sure. Cheers!
