Thanks JD!

The smell has so much bourbon, holy shit. It looks like a good RIS. Pitch black with an off white head. The bourbon dominates the nose, with strong notes of honey, whole bean vanilla, and toasted wood. I love it.

The taste is solid. Strong vanilla heavy bourbon. Loads of full flavored wood heavy bourbon really dominates. vanilla is the main barrel flavor, and in a good way. Boozy in the middle as well, with a good bit of accentuating barrel flavors. I know this was aged in Pappy 20 barrels, and it shows. The bourbon ALMOST takes over the original beer, but it needed to. The base was SO bitter that it needed to mellow out, and it did beautifully. The base malty bitterness has turned into a beauty of a malt. It would be a 5.0 in terms of taste, but BA Blackout takes that. Its just not as sweet and balanced.

2010 vintage, thanks to hu5om (and e11a627 for getting it for him) for sharing at our christmas tasting!

A: a beautiful black pour, a quickly settling khaki head is observed.

S: a forefront of bourbon followed by sweet chocolate maltiness.

T: similar to smell, an initial warmth of bourbon teases the tongue before phasing into sweet chocolate flavors in a nicely balanced, well rounded flavor.

MF/D: like silk on the tongue, this could be drunk all night. so incredibly smooth.

Thanks to Bob at the Distributors tent at the Indiana Summer Micro Brewers Festival 2011. I'm not sure how he obtained a Growler of this, and I didn't ask.
This beer stole the spotlight of the event from Founders Cashew Mountain.

O: Its one of those beers that is almost perfect in every way that you can't accurately describe it. If you like Abyss, FW14, Zukhavs, Dark Lord, etc. You will like this.

Thanks to Exiled for sharing this bottle. Very excited to try this one.

The beer pours a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma is heavy on the chocolate and roasted malt, with a good bit of whiskey notes present as well. This is definitely a barrel-aged beer.

The flavor is once again dominated by chocolate and roasted malt notes. There is also a good bit of bourbon, maple and vanilla notes which compliment the malt and chocolate notes very well.

Medium to thick motuhfeel and low to medium carbonation. Very nice.

Bottle thanks to Shilt! Poured into a snifter.

A: Jet black. Looks thick in the glass. Had a nice beige head that receded in less than 5 minutes.
S: Chocolate, bourbon and vanilla.
T: Roasted malts, chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, oakiness. Tiny amount of coffee flavors. Ends with a nice, lingering chocolate aftertaste.
M: Medium/thick body, with nice, light carbonation. A bit of alcohol burn in the aftertaste.
O: Excellent beer that I would drink any day if I could. Worth seeking out.

22oz bomber poured into a flute, huge thanks to imagineiii for busting this open!

Pours pitch black with a very generous super dark brown/chocolate coloread head that slowly fades - almost looks like a nitro poured beer, very nice. Aroma is very nice, you can tell the barrel has mellowed it out quite a bit, and I'm getting just a little hint of vanilla on the nose.

Taste is rich, chocolate, oak, vanilla, and the light hint of coconut which is really kinda unique. The mouthfeel is spot on, full and creamy with a really mellow finish. Really a fantastic beer, sadly i had this before the non BA version, so I'll probably be a bit underwhelmed by the regular one now.

22oz bottle enjoyed at an awesome tasting with some local BA's. poured into a new belgium snifter.

about a 1/4 of creamy light mocha colored head, decent lace. opaque black body.

lots of boozey bourbon dominates the nose, definatly nothinf solvent like. a smooth, clean chocolate, roasted malt just noticable behind the booze.

totally different taste than i was expecting based on the aroma. lots of bourbon that blends very nicely with an ideal chocolate flavor. some vanilla noticable. smooth warming bourbon.

very smooth and very creamy. light carbonation with a heavy thick body.

a very good beer, the bourbon definatly dominates over the chocolate. i wouldnt mind one of these for the cellar, could be quite interesting with some age on it.

Bottle (2011)

Acquired via trade
Thanks, match1112!

(Aged for 1+ year)

Black throughout, though not particularly thick or menacing in appearance, like some other barrel-aged stouts. Small ring of dark brown bubbles, but not much of a head. Very little visible carbonation. Leaves the glass oily and spotted.

Not a ton of barrel in the aroma, though there are some complementary notes. Along with the barrel are definite, rich, roast and chocolate notes. Complete, though not particularly mind-blowing.

The flavor follows the nose. This is not particularly heavy with barrel notes, but the base stout is exceptional: chocolate, roast, a bit of vanilla, and some wood accompaniment.

Medium bodied with low carbonation.

Good, and exceptionally drinkable, but I wouldn't seek it out or trade for it again. There are just too many good or better available, local options.

On tap at the release party.

Pours a light tan head to accompany an opaque black brew. A standard look for an RIS.

Loads of chocolate, black strap, malt, vanilla and coffee in the nostrils.

I get some bitterness in the taste and glimpses of cocoa powder and soupy brownie mix. The barrel is amazing in this version! Not being the biggest fan of the regular version of SC, I was a little apprehensive of this was all going to come together. Well, the barrel aging does absolute wonders.

Low carbonation and very, very smooth. Alcohol is well hidden as one could easily polish off a few pints of this in a session. This is the real deal and a perfect example of how barrel aging can take a good beer and make it incredible.
