Couldn't make the release, so my good friend Rob brought one back for me! I wasn't overly impressed with the non-BA version, so hopefully this version lives up to the hype. 2011 vintage poured into a snifter...

A - Pours a pitch black color that is completely opaque. A small, one finger beige/khaki color head forms and recedes to a colar. Some nice, spotty lacing is evident.

S - Starts with strong notes of bourbon and obvious barrel aging along with dark, roasted malts. Notes of rich, dark chocolate, coffee bean and brown sugar come through as well. There are some wonderful notes of vanilla, oak and some toasted coconut. Really very nice.

T - The taste follows the nose pretty closely. Strong bourbon flavors up front along with dark, roasted malts. The bourbon is quite sweet. The sweetness is enhanced by flavors of dark chocolate, vanilla, toasted coconut. That sweetness is balanced well with roasted coffee, brown sugar, and some dry oak notes. Pretty we'll balanced and certainly more impressive than the non-BA version.

M - Medium bodied beer; something that brings this down a bit for me as I would like a fuller bodied beer. Lower carbonation as well making this one very smooth and almost creamy. The oak makes the finish a bit dry.

O - MUCH better than the non-BA version. The flavors were all very we'll balanced and made this a great BA RIS to sip on. I hope to get to try this again some day.

Bottle to snifter
Vintage: 2011

From notes. Shared at the DL Variant + Others Tasting in Chicago (October 2011).

A: Deep chocolate. Barely a quarter (mocha) fingernail head on medium pour.

S: Roasted malt, bourbon, dark chocolate, oak and dark fruits.

T: Much like the smell; however, the booze is very pronounced and the taste is quite roasty. Well-balanced bourbon notes swallowed by dark chocolate and fruit.

M: Medium body with gentle, smooth (just-right) carbonation.

O: I enjoyed this beer quite a bit, yet I wish there was a more going on with it. It is possible that is was swallowed by the other Russian Imperial Stouts at the table, but I will be happy to try my other bottle standalone (or possibly compared to the regular). Another thought is that it might just need to age a bit - which I can happily do! Will definitely return here.

From notes, on draft at BASC 2011. I'm don't like regular SC, loved BASC 2010 so was optimistic about trying BASC 2011 (PvW barrels! woo?)

Pours a near black with a thin cream head, minimal lacing. Aroma is dark chocolate, toffee, caramel, tangy dark fruit, lots of booze, and roast malt. Generally very mild and bland. Flavor follows the nose, fruity and bourbon with charred and roast malt that isn't well blended with the barrel. Sorely disappointing after the 2010 sample I had, this reminded me more of some of DuClaw experiments at barrel aging stouts than a world class, refined example of the style.

We had this next to the regular version at the epic stout tasting last weekend. Served in a snifter.

Appearance: Pours almost black with a reddish ring around the edge when the light hits it. There is a layer of tan head that fades quickly.

Smell: Just a bit sweet with roasted malt, dark fruit, and some bourbon.

Taste: Much smoother than the regular version. Actually picking up a little chocolate, which is nice. Sweet roast and smooth bourbon.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with tingly carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: This one was better than the regular version, but still underwhelming given my expectations. These beers may be living off of the reputation of past batches.
