Bottle 233

Pours jet black with no penetrable light. A creamy half inch mocha colored head fades into a rich top leaving a thick layer of lace in its wake.

Aromas in this seem a little tight and restrained. Hints of bourbon, cardboard, cocoa, dark chocolate, burnt caramel, honey, black fruits, light vanilla, toasted coconut and wood.

Wow the taste on the other hand is phenomenal. Rich layers of cocoa, fudge and dark chocolate, Nice dollop of honey. Black fruit, burnt caramel, earthy hops, light bourbon, toasted oak and vanilla. Finish is short and semi sweet. A hint of leather and asphalt. Hot on the finish in the back of the throat and chest. Mouth is a bit thin and medium bodied. However this complex beast isn't hurt too badly by it. Years to go on this one.

After sampling the van pappy dark lord just prior to trying this beer, it was perhaps to be expected that this would be something of a let down.

Sampled at the epic finewinemike event.

The beer pours a dark brown color, with good head retention and lacing. The nose is impressive in this beer, albeit a bit boozy. Still, I otherwise pick up considerable chocolate, prunes and vanilla, that in combination is quite attrative. Given the aroma profile, I have to say I was all the more disappoitned by what I got on the palate. The beer was a thin and fairly dry, and seemed to be dominated by licorice and light coffee. Also, I picked up some noticeable heat on the finish, which further detracted from the flavor profile. Mouthfeel otherwise was medium bodied at most, with an adequate at best finish.

Maybe I would have liked this beer more if I had tried it at the outset of the tasting, but the fact remains that this was probably the least impressive beer I sampled at the tasting. Along with CBS and the 2010 Kate the Great, this was one of the few beers that disappointed at this tasting event.

Bomber poured into a tulip
Thanks to thagr81us for the bottle--- hope you are doing better

A-- Poured black. Just slight bits of red tint at the top of the beer. One finger light brown head that quickly fell to film and then disappeared. Just a small bit of lacking.

S-- Good nose. Bourbon, oak, Carmel, Vanilla, Chocolate and some earthy hops. Really nice staying power of the nose. Maybe best part of this beer.

T-- Bourbon, Vanilla, Chocolate and more earthy hops. Good taste to this.

M-- Slick and oily. Body is a bit thin but quite good. Not as good as taste and nose are. Spot on carbonation and feel to this. Really felt the barrel added a lot to the base beer.

O-- Not as good as BCS rare but a good substitute. Well hidden alcohol and a lot of flavor to this. Only real failing is the body, as a bit thin I thought. Still a good BA beer and if can not get BCS Rare a very good substitute with the PVW barrel.

22oz bomber into a snifter - 2011 Vintage

A: Pours almost completely black with a nice brown head that fades to a ring and leaves some good lacing on the glass.

S: The nose is really something. Big aromas of cocoa, molasses, vanilla, and a small earthy hop aroma on the back end. It smells pretty complex and very unique compared to most barrel aged stouts.

T: The taste is opposite of the nose. It starts with a lot of earthy flavors including dark roasted/burnt malt and hops along with some great molasses and chocolate flavors.

M: The feel is creamy and full bodied...very nice.

O: A good beer with an interesting nose and nice flavors. It's actually pretty close to the Nebraska brew I had last night but a bit more complex.

Reviewed from notes.

Bottle shared by Stoutfest.

This is a dark beer-- it has some red hints in it, but for the most part, it looks black or maybe deep brown-- like molasses in color. Doesn't look as thick as I'd hope, but it isn't thin or watery looking either. Decent retention and some nice lacing, but not super-impressive-- just a good looking beer.

Toasted brown sugar, molasses, a hint of anise, some caramel malt, and some burnt toffee come through on the nose.
The taste starts out kinda sweet but turns more dry with a bit of anise sneaking in there. Little bourbon-like booziness towards the finish.

Feel isn't bad, but it could with a hair more carbonation. Feels thick and oily.

Overall--- pretty decent. To be honest, this is another of those beers where the hype doesn't match up to the performance. It's ok, but for my money, I'd be happier with plenty of beers off the shelf over this one.

Served from a 22 oz. bombe bottle into a snifter. Part of the very generous Pre-Thanksgiving Tasting Session offered by fellow BA CosmicEvan.

Appears a super-dark brown. A tiny rim of foam with small bubbles settles in a round the rim.

The smell of bourbon comes through here big time! There's a definite "sting" to the nose from it, balanced by a touch of licorice.

The taste is surprisingly bitter. I'm a little surprised by the hop profile coming through in such a dark beer.

The mouthfeel is marked by the accompanying booze burn. Soon after, though, it becomes pretty clean for the middle and "outro."

Overall a good good beer but I think it might need to sit for awhile longer for some of its bourbon to mellow out and blend in more. It's still rather "warm."
