650 mL bottle thanks to lanamj. This one was poured into my Southampton RIS snifter.

Olde Rabbit's Foot pours a standard stout black. There's about a finger and half of head, a very solid showing in this glass. Head retention is pretty good, but lacing is firmly planted on the spotty side of the fence. The nose is nicely chocolaty. It's not as much of a chocolate bomb as Goose Island's Big John, but it's up there. There's also a bit of bourbon, as well as a straight booziness that's just a little to intense for my liking. Semi sweet milk chocolate is the centerpiece of the flavor profile as well, no doubt highlighted thanks to the vanilla flavors picked up from the barrel aging. The booziness has died down a bit, but the subtle bourbon flavor definitely remains. So far so good, but all that is tarnished by a brassy dose of what tastes like earthy European hops. It's a bit out of place, and doesn't really jive with the rest of the picture this beer's painting. The mouthfeel's alright, but nothing special. I'd say it's a little thin and a little bubbly (emphasis on little on both counts), and that keeps it from being great. I love the spirit of camaraderie that Olde Rabbit's Foot represents, and I've either enjoyed beers from, or heard good things about all three breweries involved. That said, the end result here is a somewhat ho-hum barrel aged imperial stout.

Pours black with a mocha head and a nice collar around the glass.

Smells like chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, oak, brown sugar, and molasses.

Taste opens with the bourbon and chocolate flavor, moving into a tobacco and brown sugar flavor. Its very sweet, but the oak helps to dry it out with a warming alcohol bite. This is a delightful stout.

Mouthfeel is a little thin, but the carbonation is spot on.

Overall, its really really good. Not sure to age the other bottle...

Poured into my Jackie O's snifter. Shared with Rhettroactive and IrishColonial.

A: Pours a deep, dark, impenetrable black. A gorgeous finger and a half of dark brown head rises up from the brew. Two coats of lacing cover my glass. As the beer sits, the head reduces to a half finger and lightens to a cream color. A quick swirl brings the head back to a full finger and dark brown again. This looks freakin' great.

S: Oh wow does this smell amazing. Dark chocolate, light coffee roast, and sweet, vanilla-y bourbon barrels. Loads of dark fruit linger in the background, just a hint of raisin. This is barleywine-esque, and a close comparison to Bourbon County Rare. What a great smelling beer.

T: Milk chocolate and roasted coffee stand out immediately, washing over the front and exploding on the mid. The vanilla and coconut from the bourbon barrels assert themselves quickly. The bourbon is not overwhelming, but augments the chocolate, dark fruit, and coffee flavors with a vanilla creaminess. Absolutely fantastic.

M: Good. Carbonation is appropriately thin, just enough to balance everything. Finish is just a touch on the watery side, but that's an easy feat considering the wonders of the body of this beer. Very good.

O: This is a fantastic beer, and I'm glad to have shared it with some close friends. It has a strong dark fruit and chocolate presence, which the bourbon barrels complement damn near perfectly. Near perfectly blended and balanced, ORF is quite an achievement. Nothing dominates, but everything is well thought out and augments the overall taste of this fine brew. Great great great job, NC breweries!

From 22oz bomber to Jackie O's tulip glass on 10/10/11
*From notes

-- Thanks be to John (or was it Eric?) --

Vintage 2011

A: Dark. Really dark. A solid pour yields a 1.25 finger head with decent retention. Moderate lacing follows.

S: Love the nose. The best bourbon on the market has saturated this beer, and it shows. There's some dark vine fruit here too, but without question the PvW takes the cake here.

T: Creamy vanilla up front, followed by dark fruits, warm honey and charred malt. The bourbon is all over this, yet what really sticks out is that damn honey. This is a sweeter stout then I typically enjoy, yet the bourbon really helps to keep me happy. The only other knack here is that once it's down the gullet, it just doesn't leave much of a lasting impression on my palate.

M: This feels really nice. I can't say it's mind blowingly textured or creamy, but it's certainly well above average.

O: Olde Hickory/Duck-Rabbit/Foothill's collaboration Olde Rabbit's Foot is a really nice bottle of beer. Unlike Foothill's BA Sexual Chocolate (aged in the same barrels), the base here doesn't lay down and take it from Pappy nearly as much, as the honey addition really changes the game. In my humble opinion, I prefered the PvW dominated BA Sexy Choc, as it cuts down on the residual sugar, and catered a bit more to my palate.

My 300th Review!

22oz bottle into a Goblet glass served at fridge temp

2011 Release

A- Pours a opaque black that doesn't allow any light through it no matter what. On top of the black body is a small 1 finger khaki head that dissipates fairly quickly. Not much retention but some really sexy legs on the side of the glass.

S- Deep dark roastiness up front with hints of sweet chocolate, nuts, caramel or toffee, musty oak, vanilla, and tons of old Bourbon. Could live in this glass.

T- Wow Super complex. The sweet dark chocolate hits the front of the tongue with hints of creamy caramel malts and tobacco. When it crosses the middle of the tongue the strong bourbon flavors and barrel quality's come through with musty oak and vanilla that coat the throat. But the finish is where it shines with bitter coffee and a slight smoke or char. Definitely a nice boozy finish but not over powering for sure, The alcohol creates a nice flavor and fullness in the body.

M- Full bodied with moderate carbonation and a nice bitter full finish.

Overall I have to say having had a lot of bourbon aged beers the Pappy Van Winkle really comes through creating one hell of a unique flavor as well as one strong flavor that shines through perfectly.

SkÅL!
