Served into a Foothills pint glass from a growler

A: Yellow/Orange, not entirely clear but I was surprised about how much I can see through it. On the pour, about a finger's head which looks creamy and white. It settles down and lingers a little. Nice lacing on the glass, too.

S: Citrus grapefruit lemon and orange

T: See above. But serious, this is a great tasting beer. It's sweet and bitter, well balanced. It's almost like orange juice with grapefruit squeezed into it with lemon zest.

M: Mild carbonation, smooth.

O: This beer really surprised me. I love Hoppyum but Jade takes it to another level. It was worth getting a growler of this, absolutely amazing.

22oz Bomber

Big huge thanks to Wil for sending me one of my favorites from NC! Jade is a beauty of a beer. 24kt gold in color, it glimmers, while a few streams of carbonation swirl to the surface. The dirty white head is silky on the pour but becomes craggy and rocky as it settles. The foam has an eggshell sheen and leaves chunky lacing clung to the glass.

The nose on this beer is so unique. It's all sorts of jammy upfront, both orange and grapefruit. That's always inviting but the uniqueness comes in the form of a very floral, almost perfume driven, hoppiness that joins the jam. There are even exotic tea like qualities present. This unique hoppiness is draped over a bready and softly sweet caramel backbone. Inviting, to say the least.

As floral as the nose is, the flavor profile is as resinous. It's resinous upfront before being joined by the jamminess mentioned above. The citrus brightens from jam to pith as it moves through and those floral qualities open up on the backend. The hop profile is both expressive and deep. Again, that is all draped over a sturdy, bready malt backbone with a kiss of caramel sweetness. Soft, clean alcohol adds a peppery bite.

The feel of this IPA is that of wrapping yourself in velvet. The body is plush and luxurious but never heavy or cloying, as a matter of fact it dries up very well on the swallow. Bitterness never extends beyond moderate and lingers until the next drink. Drinkability is off the charts like most of Foothills offerings. Thumbs up.

Jade is a great IPA from the folks at Foothills. It's unique in nearly every aspect but the nose really sets it apart from other IPAs. Great balance, depth, dryness, and lingering bitterness make this a winner in my book. Thanks again, Wil!

Finally got to try this beer yesterday at the brewpub.Poured into a standard pint glass a deep orange infused golden with a great looking sticky white head.Citrus fruits all over the place in the nose with some underlying pine,a noticable caramel malt base is there but the citric hops dominate.A deep blast of citrus hops hits ya up front and they linger thru the duration,a little alcohol infused sweetness and caramel is there but again the hops steal the show. This is a great beer,it lived up to the hype.

Bottle share at Proof. Pale straw in color, white head that faded to medium collar. Aroma is a light malt bill, some grassy hops. Taste is bitter, grassy, some floral hops. Odd taste. Not very enjoyable. Light to medium body and low to med carbonation.

Somewhat hazy light golden hued with a quarter inch thick head of white frothy foam. Brussels lacing. Gentle pine like hop aroma. There's definitely a prevalent pine like hop flavor. This is a great everyday IPA. Mouth is sticky and the bitterness prickles the tongue. Front of the palate is a gentle pine hop burn followed by a nice light malt backbone and a gentle hop burn on the fade.

On tap in Asheville.
Slightly hazy body is covered by a durable head.

Appealing aroma. Hop dominant aroma with faint malt base.

Plenty of herbal/weedy/grassy hop flavor. Long lasting hoppy aftertaste.
Mild to moderate bitterness.

O: excellent IPA: recommended.

Had on tap at Foothills. Piney hops take a backseat to floral citrusy orange and grapefruit flavors. That being said this is not a one-dimensional hops only beer. Could (and did) enjoy several of these in a single session.

Overall great IPA. Had this on the same day as SC and was more impressed with Jade.

Tangerine orange in color, clean & clear, with a bright white head. Head is large and foamy. Nice bits of stringy and spotty lace shift around.

This beer is different every time I have it. Sometimes it's darker and greener in its hoppiness and other times it hits more as tropical and fruity. This bottle seems to be leaning in the direction of fruity-tropical. Bright citrus, melon, lifesavers pineapple flavor, and passionfruity. Happy and refreshing hop aromas over clean caramel and crackery/grainy malt. Flavors are lightly sweet and briskly bitter, melon, citrus, other miscellaneous fruit, dusting of pine, hint of citrus rind and bitter grapefruit. All around enjoyable. The dark side of this is coming out more as it warms. Seemingly simple with a pleasant mix of flavors.

On tap at Wine 101 in Wake Forest

A - bright orangish yellow with a soft, thin, pillowy head that has great retention

S - light crystal malts, faint spicy hops

T - big citrusy hop notes, grapefruit, some herbal notes, faint peppery spiciness, mild bitter finish

M - medium bodied, smooth, well carbonated

This is a delicious, highly drinkable IPA. It may not have perfect balance or an outrageous ABV, but this is a beer with a good flavor profile and a drinkability that encourages a second round. I definitely recommend it.

on-tap @ Flying Saucer in Raleigh / Tyler's in Carrboro

Hazy orange pint - explosive aroma highlighted by bright orange and grapefruit. This is a fantastic IPA - much better than hoppyum. Jade hops are quite nice - bursting with fresh citrus and cracked pepper. This is a must-have.

On tap at Sticks and Stones, Greensboro, NC. Served in a pint glass.

Appearance - Hazy orange body with a nice white head. Excellent lacing and retention.

Smell - Distinctive Jade hop aroma. Bright and citrusy orange up front that immediately turns herbal. Great aroma.

Taste - Mimics the smell. Much more herbal here though. Just a hint of sweetness. Minimal malt content. Touch of bitterness at the back end.

Mouthfeel - Seems heavier than a single IPA. Herbal character combines with the bitterness and intensifies it.

Overall - Grew on me as I drank it. I think this could be much better with a different hop, but it's excellent regardless.

Big thanks goes out to my boy caSSino for bringing this one to share with me when he came to visit me due to my injuries! Reviewed live. Served from growler into a NoDa Brewing snifter. Pours a slightly hazy yellow-orange with a one finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma is comprised of sweet malt, pot, pine, earth, citrus, earth hop, and marijuana hop. The flavor is of sweet malt, earth, pot, citrus, earth hop, and marijuana hop. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a good brew. I was really surprised at how earthy this one was. The earthiness really sticks to your palate after each sip. Worth trying if you get the chance.

Poured honey gold from a bomber with a two finger white head. The sweet smell contains tropical fruity hops and a piney undertone. Nice. The taste is similar to the smell with mango, pineapple and pine mingling nicely. A nice balanced carmally backbone adds ballast to the heady hops. It finishes with a resiney bite. The mouthfeel is sticky and nicely carbonated. This is a great IPA and by, the best thing I have had from Foothills.

A- pours bright golden-yellow with a small white creamy head that leaves lace all around the ring.

S- citrus and lemon zest, slightly earthy, with clean-slightly sweet malt

T- citrus hop zest with a kick of lemongrass, herbal notes mid palate with a dry and bitter finish. Extremely well balanced as the malt provides just enough sweetness to let the citrus notes shine.

M- medium bodies with low carbonation and a pure velvet mouthfeel with a creamy smooth finish

O- solid IPA, very drinkable and well balanced.

Tap at Duckworths. A bright orangy-gold pour. Maybe a finger of white head. Stuck to the glass pretty well.

Aroma, quite piney with some grapefruit.

Taste, some pale carmelly malt at first. Overridden by a ton of bitter citrus, herbal and piney hop notes. Finishes with lemon zest and grapefruit. A powerful hop resin bomb.

To the heavy side of light bodied. Ample carbonation, but the oils just coat the mouth. No problems drinking this one.
A must try for hopheads.

A: Slight Orange tint to it. Nice head that dissipated quickly.

S: Fresh citrus mostly with a little pine.

T: Big citrus notes up front with a nice herbal character that lingered. A little sweetness from the malts was present.

M: Light to medium bodied. The taste lingered a while.

O: Enjoyed a pint at Foothills pub. I love this beer and love that they have made it available pretty much year round. It is a quite unique IPA with a little more herbal and slight mint flavor profile than I am used to. The Jade is my 2nd favorite IPA from Foothills... next to the Papa Jade!

S: bright citrus notes dominate with pineapple, grapefruit, and oranges.

T: citrus dominates here as well with grapefruit and pineapple mostly. The finish has some slight earthy and pine notes.

M: medium light body with a nice bite of carbonation to go with the hop flavors.

O: a surprisingly good IPA overall. Nice and fruity and drinkable without being overly sweet or bitter.

I had this on tap at the brewery at the same time I sampled the "Seeing Double". The appearance was a little weak, no head to speak of, no lacing, a light yellow in color. The first thing noticed is the grapefruit. The aroma hit me before the pint was set down. The taste is more of the same, pure grapefruit, it's all I could detect. A little acidic for my liking. It was very refreshing, but I think one is all I could drink in succession. A far cry from Seeing Double, although they are not really in the same class. Prost!

Poured on tap into a shaker pint.

Half a finger of off white head presented, kind of sudsy. Hazy murky body a bit, yellow but with light brown through most of it. Lemon body on the bottom with murky brown up top. Virtually no visible carbonation, minimal lacing.

Aroma and bouquet just jumps and explodes. Ripping juicy melon and cantalope. Hop tropics seem to sneak in, with a matching light sweetness and juicy quality. I am in love.

Palate has a very noticeable and unexpected carbonation. It distracts just a little. Sweet melon matching palate, with hop bursting woody resin. Coating. Mild tropics with lingering mellow fruit that goes on forever. Honey light action that goes on forever, with a lip smacking coating.

Overall a stupid good ipa that is bigger than most DIPAs I've had, and really is memorable..

On a rare trip through Winston-Salem a week ago, my wife and I suddenly got thirsty and decided to stop for lunch and some beverages at Foothills. When we arrived, I inquired about the tap labeled "Jade IPA", which we were not familiar with. The bartender described it as a brewery only test batch IPA brewed with Citra, Cascade, and New Zealand Jade hops.

Orange under a thin head. Stinky fresh fruit, sweet pulpy juice aroma. Bitter, sticky, juicy, pulpy...citrus, pine sap, serious grapefruit, pineapple. Not much malt to be found here. Sticky, bitter, oily...dangerously delicious. Outstanding! Very happy to have stumbled upon this.

reviewed from notes on my last trip to winston last february. was thrilled to find this on tap as i was still reeling from missing the sex choc release.

Pours a merky amber color with a nice 1 finger frothy head that was slow to disappear, this just looks yummy. Smell is knock your socks off!! Citrusy hops all the way, unreal smell, orange and grapefruit in there. Taste is loaded down with citrus, with a fantastic dry hoppy finish. A bit of a grassy, pine taste, but one of the most citrus favored hops I have ever tasted. Went down ohh soo smooth, just right carbonation. This is so a keeper, cannot wait to get my hands on some more of this. Just awesome, really awesome brew.

I havent tasted anything from foothills that I would speak badly of bedause they are all pretty exceptional, but I felt compelled to write something about this particular beer. In a word the Jade is awesome! The color is light with a light head, the aroma and taste are amazing, pact full of citrisy pungient sweet hop flavor leaving your mouth both wet and dry at the same time. Half way through a pint there is still lacing left at the top of the glass spidering its way down the wall. I had a growler filled one night and went back the next day to have it refilled. Im not trying to dis the Hopium, but I would love to see this beer become there year round IPA. I highly suggest this beer to anyone who is in or around the winston-salem area.

Had on-tap at Universal Joint Asheville. Served in a Sweetwater pint glass.

A- Pours a light amber color with a 1/2 inch off-white head that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a full sheet of surface foam. Drippy, semi-resilient lacing.

S- Bright citrusy hop aroma that's a bit sweet and has some grassiness in the back.

T- The citrus notes come through pretty well in the taste accompanied by some moderate bitterness. Zesty notes of orange, lemon and grapefruit.

M- Slightly sharp and oily from the hops. Medium carbonation and a lightish body.

O- I've only ever had this on draft and I find it to be good, not great. People say it's better out of the bottle but I won't be finding out anytime soon since it's cheaper from the tap. Maybe one day, when there's nothing else good at the bottle shop, I'll check out the bottled version.

0n-tap at Thirsty Monk, Asheville, NC

A: The beer is hazy yellowish amber in color and has no visible carbonation. It poured with a thin white head that died down, leaving a patch of bubbles on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Strong aromas of citrusy and tropical fruit hops are present in the nose.
T: Like the smell, the taste is very hoppy and has strong flavors of citrus and tropical fruits along with a moderate amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and very crisp on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This is a very enjoyable IPA that delivers lots of interesting aromas and flavors from the hops. It's not overly bitter and no alcohol is present in the taste.
