I consumed a draft at Foothills and this review is from a growler purchased there and poured into a pint glass.

The beer is a mildly hazey straw yellow color with a 1 finger off white head that produces splotchy lacing on the glass.

The aroma is heavvvy grapefruit hops with amber malts in the background.

The flavor follows the aroma but to a more complex degree. I like these hops, bittering, flavoring, and aromatics. I like the medium carbination and mouthfeel as well as the dryish finish.

This is a great American IPA. I think it gives some of the big boys (Lagunitas, Bells, and Ballast Point) a run for thier money.

As the brew warms the scrupteous flavoring/bittering hops fade just a bit, but it still leaves that lovely grapefruit on the tongue and in the throat.

Hard to believe that just over 5 months ago, I DIDN'T LIKE ALES, yet after opening my mouth and mind, here I am enjoying this great beer that is brewed just 20 miles down the road. WTG Foothills !! (986 characters)

I passed through Winston-Salem with a suitcase full of Surly beers, intending to land some Sexual Chocolate. I did, but I also fell a little into love with Jade.

Described to me as a hopped up West Coast IPA, the staff at Foothills seemed to love mixing this with Hoppyum and Seeing Double, their standard IPA and DIPA.

Those were fun, but I'll stick with the Jade, myself. Made with Jade hops from New Zealand, it's a clean, wildly aromatic monster, with not too much sweetness or bitterness to drink in abundance.

And I wanted to drink it in abundance. I think Caleb, the bartender, ended up pouring me samples of 11 beers, including the blends. I left with a growler of Jade**, my new best friend. Until the next cask of Tea Bagged Furious, that is.

The next day, my sister, whom I was visiting, discovered that she was an IPA girl when I opened the growler. This was a beautiful beer, and I will be surprised if they can keep the magic in a bottle.

**I also left with two of bottles of Sexual Chocolate and an Olde Rabbit's Foot. Two bottles of Darkness has a way of opening a stash. (1,092 characters)

on-tap @ Flying Saucer in Raleigh / Tyler's in Carrboro

Hazy orange pint - explosive aroma highlighted by bright orange and grapefruit. This is a fantastic IPA - much better than hoppyum. Jade hops are quite nice - bursting with fresh citrus and cracked pepper. This is a must-have. (283 characters)

"on tap" at Ridgewood in Raleigh.

Near perfect gold pour, with a great combination of lemon and orange colors. No head and no lace, but great color.

Big blast of aggressive pineapple citrus in the nose. Really nice.

Big shot of sweet, estery hops right up front. Lots of grapefruit here. Near perfect finish with strong dry fruit. Arid.

Body is just right for the style. Stands up well to the flavor push.

Really wish they would do this year round. Always great to find it somewhere. (489 characters)

Pours a clear golden with just a touch of amber. Massive full head with excellent lacing that lasts. Very nice nose of citrus hops - grapefruit, orange and tropical notes of pineapple coupled with mango - over a slightly sweet caramel note. In the background, a hint of pine is also detected. Light medium body with an almost smooth texture. Slightly above normal carbonation level. The exceptional flavor profile is well balanced with hop flavor, light bitterness and sweetness. It begins with the citrus and tropical hop flavor profile of the nose, progresses to light bitterness with a peppery note and ends with a nice caramel sweetness. The finish effervesces into a mix of the full flavor profile leaving a slight citric tartness over a peppery bitterness. Exceptional seems a bit of an understatement for this world class ale. (833 characters)

Had on tap at Mellow Mushroom on 2/1/2013. Excited to try this after reading reviews but never finding it anywhere. Poured a bright, clear, golden amber with about a finger of white head that left decent lacing. Smell was exactly what I wanted: all citrus, predominantly grapefruit with a touch of sweet orange. Nearly perfect smell. Taste was crisp citrus with just the right amount of bitterness. Only downside I can come up with (and I'm really grasping here) is that the body is a little lighter than I expected. Still, an easy drinking, perfectly citrus IPA. I really hope this gets the six-pack treatment that Foothills is giving some of their better known beers - would be a regular purchase for me. (706 characters)

Poured from a 22oz bomber. Citrus smell and taste with peach as the most prominent note. Just the right balance with a smooth, moderately bitter finish. This ranks right up there with freak of nature as nc's best IPAs. (221 characters)

Sampled at Tyler's Apex. Nice appearance with a golden color and a slight haze. Minimal white head. Fantastic aroma with citrusy, floral and fruity hops. Mmmm. Flavors follows with serious hop flavor and a nice bitterness. Creamy smooth. Great NC beer! (252 characters)

Walked into Foothills Brewing yesterday to see if they had this gem on tap (get it)? Fortunately, they did, along with about 10 other beers.

Poured a hazy orange color that was pretty translucent to be honest. I didn't see too much sediment but I couldn't see through the other side of the glass. Not much of a head, but I guess they wanted me to get the most bang for my buck, which I appreciate.

The smell of this one was pretty damn good, kind of a Sculpin on crack. There were hints of orange, tangerine, pineapple and peach, along with other tropical fruits.

The taste was quite similar, even better if you can believe that. Tropical fruits dominate. The flavor did have a bit more grapefruit than the smell, though.

Mouthfeel was prickly carbonation and smooth overall.

After tasting both this and the Hoppyum IPA, I have a question to ask Foothills: why is this not being bottled?! This beer is one of the best single IPAs I've ever had and I've only seen it available in two locations, one being the brewery itself. If you can find this stuff, get a growler of it ASAP. (1,083 characters)

My new favorite IPA made in North Carolina. This one had great citrus aromas with a nice floral component as well. Flavors were full on grapefruit and blood orange with only a hint of malt. I cannot wait to see what Foothills does with this one as I think it is head and shoulders above the competition for great IPA's in North Carolina. Alcohol is completely hidden on this one, just crisp citrus notes and a refreshing hop bite on the finish. (444 characters)

Had on tap at Foothills. Piney hops take a backseat to floral citrusy orange and grapefruit flavors. That being said this is not a one-dimensional hops only beer. Could (and did) enjoy several of these in a single session.

Overall great IPA. Had this on the same day as SC and was more impressed with Jade. (308 characters)

Not sure why this one doesn't get more love-likely limited bottling and distro but a shame.

Solid one finger head on an orange base with moderate carbonation

Taste and aroma are tropical fruit with just a hints of pine.

Slightly dry as I love my IPA to be.

Super solid IPA--only occasional bomber sightings which is too bad as mainly have to find it on tap. Last time in bottles was gone immediately.

Recommended highly. (425 characters)

L - Copper with clarity, 2 fingers of head and huge sticky lacing left all over the glass all the way down. This is how an IPA should look.

S - Huge citrus nose, dry hopped with Citra no doubt. Tangerines, oranges. Awesome aroma

T - Citrus, oranges, nectarines, perfect malt balance. Tasty as hell. I love the Jade hop, but especially the balance in this beer.

F - Medium bodied and well carbonated.

O - An amazing IPA. Glad I found this one. Definitely worth buying over and over again. (498 characters)

A - Pours a straw yellow w a tint of gold minimally hazy with a nice finger of dense white head. Nice retention and lacing slowly slides down the glass.

S - Unusual big kick of Spicy herbal hops. Probably just insanely piney and dense citrus rinds. One of a kind aroma.

T - Tons of citrus rind and spicey pine, tropical fruit burst follows. Dry sliced hoppy rinds.

M - Lightish bodied, well carbed, very refreshing.

O - unique, the jade hops are a fantastic change of pace! (477 characters)

Pours a hazy golden star color with a one inch head.
Smells freakin fantastic. All citrusy hops and tropical fruit notes in the foreground and some sweet bready malt lurking deep, and I mean deep, in the background.
Taste follows the nose nicely. Big juicy, citrusy hops hit you first. Then a nice floral, earthy hops come through in the background. Some sweet malts hold things together nicely. Has a nice dry finish that keeps you coming back for another sip. This is probably the best IPA that has come out of NC. Great job Foothills I hope this one stays in the year round line up. (586 characters)

Appearance: The honey colored liquid is capped by an inch of foam that leaves relatively few traces behind

Smell: Citrus pith in spades

Taste: Like the aroma, the beer is dominated by citrusy pith from start to finish with the malt playing a nice supportive backbone role; great attenuation keeps this one from becoming overly sweet

Mouthfeel: Medium body with crisp carbonation

Overall: A great IPA; let's hope with the additional capacity that this beer becomes part of the regular rotation (496 characters)

Holy crap, what a surprise!

I took a tour of the brewery the day I went and the brewmaster was really touting this one. Now I know why!

On tap at Foothills.

A: Poured a crystal clear, apricot-orange color with a few bubbles posing as a head floating around.

S: I got the Citra hops up front, with a sort of grapefruit-orange blend to boot. Despite the weak nose on many of their standard line-up entries, that definitely was NOT the case with this one.

T: I would describe this one as a much more complex, rice flake version of Bell's Two-Hearted, with a much more yeasty disposition overall. The finish was DEFINITELY rice.

M: This was carbonated enough, but still not too, with a slight bitterness on the finish than Foothill's other IPA efforts.

O: This was the best thing I've ever tried by Foothills... it even rivals Sexual Chocolate! However, I'll be back for BBA Sexual Chocolate this summer and we shall see... (926 characters)

Poured on-tap and served in a shaker pint, the beer is a bright, slightly hazed, orange-gold coloring with a low profile, clingy, foamy, bright white head. Nose of tropical fruit forward, with orange and grapefruit upfront, and subtle pine notes. Flavors are tropical fruit forward, with grapefruit, melon, and tangerine, followed-by roasted notes and a subtle resin character. Extremely balanced, with a slight bitter tilt into a roasted, resinous aftertaste. Smooth, clean, slightly dry finish. Great beer. (508 characters)

Thanks to n2185 for the bottle. Tasted 17 March 2014!

Pours a clear bright orange golden color. Two fingers of white head, great retention and outstanding lacing. Column of bubbles rising up the center. Stellar.

Smell is fantastic. Juicy peaches, pineapple, some sweet orange, and unidentifiable tropical fruits. It's like smelling some magical tropical fruit punch. Wow.

Taste is quite good, with those fruity juicy hops coming through nicely. It's a little chalky, but that fades quickly, leaving a smooth rounded medium-low bitterness that lasts.

Feel is really really good. Clean and crisp, but punch and vibrant, too. Just the right amount of persistence, allowing those soft bitter flavors to linger right until it's time for them to go.

This is a top-notch IPA. I love the hop aromas and their presence in the taste. And there are many other things to like about it, too. (883 characters)

Pours a cloudy topaz color.

Smells of juicy sweet pineapple and orange, lots of tropical fruit, maybe hints or flowers.

Taste is sweet juicy tropical fruit, fades into flowers and sweet honey. Really delicious

Nice mouthfeel, good carb, very drinkable.

Poured honey gold from a bomber with a two finger white head. The sweet smell contains tropical fruity hops and a piney undertone. Nice. The taste is similar to the smell with mango, pineapple and pine mingling nicely. A nice balanced carmally backbone adds ballast to the heady hops. It finishes with a resiney bite. The mouthfeel is sticky and nicely carbonated. This is a great IPA and by, the best thing I have had from Foothills. (434 characters)

Enjoying this from a bomber.

looks quite golden this year, last year was a bit more clear light copper. Poured a nice finger length head with comperable lace. Certainly has a distinct smell but nothing that overpowers my nose. I'm getting citrus for sure and some sweet florals.

This beer is incredibly smooth. First sip reminded me why i loved this so much last year on draft. An attempt at balancing with the malt but glad it isn't because the hops are so delicious.

Very smooth and crisp. Zero alcohol taste...Dangerous because i could drink many of these beverages.

What a great beer this is. Easy A. (615 characters)

A: Slight Orange tint to it. Nice head that dissipated quickly.

S: Fresh citrus mostly with a little pine.

T: Big citrus notes up front with a nice herbal character that lingered. A little sweetness from the malts was present.

M: Light to medium bodied. The taste lingered a while.

O: Enjoyed a pint at Foothills pub. I love this beer and love that they have made it available pretty much year round. It is a quite unique IPA with a little more herbal and slight mint flavor profile than I am used to. The Jade is my 2nd favorite IPA from Foothills... next to the Papa Jade! (579 characters)

Poured from a 22oz bomber about 45 degrees. Huge voluminous amounts of head from a normal balanced pour. Full 4 fingers that lingered. EXCELLENT lacing throughout so no idea what others wrote about. Color is the most golden and perfect IPA hue. Aromas of citrus (orange and lemon mostly - maybe apples?). Definitely smell the hops but it isn't overpowering. Hits the tongue really light and frothy. Extremely crisp. Bubbles of carbonation float up constantly. Well balanced taste of hops, lemon and apples. Some pine but very subtle. Thicker than a normal IPA. Medium body. Dry. Clean. Clear and crisp. Slight hops and pine for aftertaste. Just incredibly smooth and good. Would swear I was drinking a premium IPA from California. Unbelievably good. Incredible bang for the buck as well. Will purchase more. Had another one that was not "fresh" and it was pretty bad. Make SURE you purchase it fresh. (923 characters)

On a rare trip through Winston-Salem a week ago, my wife and I suddenly got thirsty and decided to stop for lunch and some beverages at Foothills. When we arrived, I inquired about the tap labeled "Jade IPA", which we were not familiar with. The bartender described it as a brewery only test batch IPA brewed with Citra, Cascade, and New Zealand Jade hops.

Orange under a thin head. Stinky fresh fruit, sweet pulpy juice aroma. Bitter, sticky, juicy, pulpy...citrus, pine sap, serious grapefruit, pineapple. Not much malt to be found here. Sticky, bitter, oily...dangerously delicious. Outstanding! Very happy to have stumbled upon this. (638 characters)
