As a fan of dark beers, I seldom find a light ale that makes me happy. This one does. Definitely has a lot of blond ale characteristics, but in a way that I actually like!

Appearance- pale, semi-transparent. 1 finger head, moderate lacing.

Smell- as neutrally beer as can be. Not the sharp lager smell, not the bitter of stouts, just "beer."

Taste- surprisingly pleasant. Not strong, but definitely flavorful. No single flavor predominates (thank heavens that Foothills didn't use cascade hops- those suckers would have overwhelmed everything in the brew) but the slight yeast, mild malt, and fairly smooth hop flavor all go well with the gentle but consistent carbonation. Given my aversion to light beers, I am shocked how much I am enjoying this one!

Mouthfeel- not too thick, and definitely not too thin. The "cream" comes through in the feel. I wish more porters and stouts hit this perfect balance of lingering flavor and taste. The aroma definitely fills the nose with every sip.

Overall- I don't even need to factor out my preference for dark beers. This is darn good. If you are looking for a "unique" beer, keep looking. This is one of those that takes a known set of characteristics and just does them well. I'll definitely come back to this one in the warm weather!!!

From notes 8/27/11

Pours a golden copper with ¼” of head that fades quickly to a thin lacing. Smells a bit musty with faint wheat notes and a little faint yeasty spice coming through. Taste is faint wheat, slightly yeasty, and just a hint of metal. Mouthfeel is crisp, smooth, and light.

A very sessionable beer, but a forgettable beer overall.

First had: on tap at Foothills

Pale yellow pour, clear, with bubbly carbonation, and a small white head; minimal retention and lacing. Light aroma, toasted grains and not much else. Sweet pale malt flavor, toasted grains, light citrusy hops bringing a slight bitterness. Light body, drinks easy enough, but lacks character (aka flavor).

12 ounce bottle -> Dogfish Head glass

A - pale straw with a small head which dissipates quickly, leaving only a small ring, but with some lacing.

S - all I got on the nose was a bready smell....but it was faint.

T - kind of a one dimensional flavor sort of piney with a dry metallic finish.

M - thin and watery.

O - easy to drink, but completely unimpressive.

12 oz bottle served in a lager glass.
Pours golden-straw colored with a semi-durable white head.
Light malty and yeasty aroma with a touch of citrus. Flavor follows. Clean and refreshing.

Feel: light body but not watery; crisp, medium carbonation; semi-dry finish.

Trying the Foothills Brewing Carolina Blonde at the Taste of Carolina at the B concourse in Charlotte, NC airport. The beer poured a clear golden color with thin white head that dissapates quickly....not much lacing. The smell includes hints of lemon and barley. The taste bursts with a tart lemon zing....the malt never realy kicks in to balance the beer. Teh mouthfeel is light to medium with big carbonation. Overall it is ok...would be great for the summer time.
