Sampled off the taps at Beaver Street Brewing in downtown Flagstaff, and poured into a twelve-ounce tulip, Hopgag is a deep, red-burnished mahogany ale, with an intense limey-pine nose. Beaver Street has crafted a sweet, toffee-and-red-malt foray into the Imperial IPA, demonstrating great balance and delicate care despite the flashy-high IBU (100), elevated abv (9.2%) and the reported hop-poundage per batch: flavors of grapefruit, alpine shrubs, fresh pine, and brown-sugared malt all resound in a gyre of well-integrated elements.

Hopgag's name belies a beneficially intentional, decidedly smooth, well-rounded and well-crafted "big" IPA, which is both better balanced and just plain better than a lot of standard, "smaller" IPAs (such as the Lumberyard offering they also had on tap at Beaver Street)—with bonus points accorded for a high degree of conformity to the high-Ponderosa winter weather.
