12oz bottle purchased as a mixed 6-pack from Jovi in Gatineau. Pours a clear dark red with a bit of head, but little lacing. Decent malty aroma. First taste is smooth. In other words, not all that much to it. Some maltiness in the flavour. Not too much to write about for this one.

Ah...its a hemp ale. My French failed me a little when I saw it on the blackboard at Le Saint-Bock. Arrived mahogany in colour with a small white cap. Sweet caramel and treacle in the aroma. Caramel again in the flavour with some roasted malts and cocoa. Mild bitterness. Smooth, medium body, which you would associate with a good hemp beer. Very decent and drinkable.

341 mL brown bottle.

Pours a clear reddish brown with a creamy tan head.

Aroma is of molasses with a bit of a salty, earthy smell.

Starts off malty and sweet with caramel and hazelnut notes. Also present is a flavour that reminds me of soy sauce that I'm guessing is the hemp seeds' contribution. Slightly sour, salty and musty. Hops are very faint and just add a bit of balace to the sweetness. Full-bodied with moderate carbonation.

I'm not really a fan of this one. I see hemp beer as more of a novelty than anything else. An excuse to display the leaf prominently on the bottle.

Appearance: Deep mahogany color, quite clear, with a small white head, really more a scattering of foam, and patchy lacing.

Aroma: Sweet caramel malt notes, dark chocolate, and a mild earthiness.

Taste: Sharp, prominent roasted malt notes at the open, followed by some earthiness, and a mild coffee and bitter cocoa presence. Finishes with a mild, but lingering molasses note.

Mouth feel: Smooth and fairly full, with slightly sharp carbonation.

Drinkability/notes: A pleasant and somewhat enigmatic beer.

Thanks to HardTarget for sharing this rare example.

Bottle inspection: 341 ml brown bottle, twisty, with 5% abv. and brewed on 04/05 (sampled 10/07).

Aroma: Roasted malt and a full dose of chocolate.

Appearance: Dark brown with good clarity. Thin brown head lasts and laces.

Flavor: Dark bread with a chocolate edge. Flavorful, but not rich. Mild paper note due to age.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, full but not fizzy carbonation, touch oily.

Overall Impression: I like it! Full flavor but moderate body. Good beer!

Respectable head with some lasting power. Initially there is lace but this disappears as the beer goes down. Pours a dark amber/light brown with a tinge of orange. It is also slightly hazy.

Dark malt is the major smell in this brew. I detect some vegetables such as pumpkin and squash.

This is a challenging beer to evaluate. The flavors seem to be off slightly. Again, I'm detecting squash flavors along with cabbage. The upfront taste starts off mellow but quickly becomes harsher and drier. The body is okay while the carbonation is quite high for the style.

Frankly, I don't know what hemp tastes or smells like in a beer. I don't think it adds or detracts enough to make a major difference here. This is a mediocre beer that remains uninteresting to me.

341 ml bottle. Notched bottled on12/06.

A- Very nice dark red mohagany colour. Beige head that leaves some lacing on the glass. Some small bubbles rising in the beer.

S- Malt with fruity notes. Roasted aromas stronger as it warms. Herbal notes also present.

T- Bitterness present and pleasant. Malt nice but not quite noticeable enough. When cold, the caramel and roasted flavours I associate with beers of this colour are weak, but they become more prominent as the beer warms. fairly good overall balance.

MF- Good mouthfeel. Soft with decent body and just right carbonation.

D- very easy to drink and pleasant to do so. A good mealtime beer.

La Folle du Roi pours a very warm and piercing garnet hue with tones of russet near the edges. An initially creamy tan head builds, leading on that it will last and lace but only one is fact in the end. A gentle lacing remains from the thin film of foam that lingers.

Very alluring notes of malt, hazelnuts, and cocoa fill the nostrils up front. Slowly, hints of hemp creep into the olfactory and add a touch of balance to the malt. Traces of hops round out the simple but complete and rounded aroma profile.

Flavours are firm and fresh with a creamy maltiness surrounded by mineral notes in the beginning. The cocoa that surfaced in the aromas makes an appearance mid-taste along with herbal and mildly charred notes. The whole is well balanced with a mild resiney bitterness.

Certainly very drinkable for its assertive but simple flavours. A versatile brew that will do well on its own or with a variety of dishes.

Bottle: Clouded cola color with a small but lasting cap that laces the glass well.

Nice spicey-herbal-burnt treacle aroma. Prickley mouth feel that turns slick. Medium body.

Flavor is spicey-herbal medicinal up front then this totally collapses mid gulp as some wonderful sorghum, cinnamon and toasted malts flood the palate. Finish starts to go bitter with medicial herbs overpowering the sweet bready malts....extremely drinkable!

This is a very good hemp beer. We usually see hemp added to sharper, lighter ale recipies but this mellow, bready, sweet, almost lager-like red ale, with the hemp adding spice and bittering, makes for a great drinking specialty beer. I got turned onto hemp beers 2 summers ago and I have to say this is the best one I’ve tasted so far where all the ingredients just meld into a wonderful flavor profile that simply works well. I want more!!

Bottle: Poured a dirty brown color beer with a medium light brown head with pretty good retention. Aroma of malt is clearly detectable and pretty much comprised everything I could detect in aroma. Taste is also heavy with malt with a strange spice or herb that is reminiscent of cardboard. Body is a bit thin with a watery feels at the end. I couldn’t detect any hops in there. Overall this is OK but doesn’t stand a great chance of making my regular purchase list.
