Tasted on August 9th, 2009.

Pours as a golden yellow beer with a huge head. Nice lacing. Get huge head at every pours. The beer aroma is malty and fruits. The fruit I get is apple. Yeah, a strong aroma of apple. Same in the taste. Very easy to drink and the alcohol is hidden somewhere... The mouthfeel is thin and soft. I would say this is a summer beer with a high alcohol content.

This beer pours a clear medium golden yellow colour, with lots and lots of thin puffy white head, which leaves sparse lace as it recedes. It smells very grassy, with a bit of fruitiness and white grain. The taste is slightly boozy white grain malt, some sweet general fruitiness, and a bit of earthy, grassy hops. The carbonation is moderate, the body robust and somewhat oily, and it finishes very dry, with some warming alcohol holding on to the end. A good strong lager, but it could improve on the heat integration.

750 ml bottle picked up at Atwater market in Montreal.

Pours a crystal clear amber/yellow, gigantic and very thick white head forms, bubbles down to a thick ring and layer, nice lacing, good retention, looks nice. Smell is nice, very grassy, some honey, apricots, light fruit, yeast, a bit of vanilla, light floral, very crisp, I like it. Taste is neat, pineapples, very malty, honey sweetness, alcohol sweetness, butter, yeast, light fruits, bit of floral in the finish. Mouthfeel is light bodied with high carbonation, some heat going down. Not bad stuff but not very exciting.

Palish yellow with a bubbly small head, this bomber could have been a cask beer. And it was from 9 months back, forgot about it. But it showed no worse for wear. A good constrained and dry bitterness, with balance. About medium mouthfeel. I liked this after a hot day. My dinner guest didn't like it, because he doesn't like bitter beers.

Poured in a tall chalice, and drank it most likely to warm for this style.

Pours clear and golden yellow, very pleaseant aroma of continental malt and fresh bread, maybe also a light note of sulfur.

Flavor wise the malt shines well enough but it also comes of as a little vegetal and very alcoholic a faily sweet. I've not had many maibock lagers, maybe I've not quite figured this style out.

Bottle: Poured a golden color lager with a big foamy head with good retention and some minimal lacing. Aroma if s dominated by sugar with light phenol notes. Taste is also dominated by some sugar and sweet malt notes with light alcohol notes. Full body with great carbonation but overall this one is just too sweet for my taste buds.

750ml corked bottle:

Departs a glowing deep gold lager with a 2 finger sticky cap fair retention good lacing.

Aromas from Germanic heaven: deep bready malitness fills the room, woody herbal hop notes and a wee bit of alcohol.

The great aroma does not transfer to the flavor profile..yes there are the ample malts and noble hops needed for a big German lager unfortunately it is not enough to cover the alcohol very well....and there is an annoying sweetness that does not belong in a well made Heller bock. Develops some decent woodsy-earthy-bready complexity and the finish is clean with a noble hop bite...just that the sweet-boozy tastes are always there riding on top of the profile, over powering these big fresh lager tastes.

Too bad... this is a promising heller bock...just a tad thin and not enough body and bulk to cover the omni-present boozy taste...almost comes off like those cheap adjunct euro malt liquors....a tad rough and unfinished.

Perhaps less sugar, some more malts and toasted wheat will take care of this in a future brewing?
