Deep brown colour, a grand malting. Decent beer and drinkability based on what it is, but I like it not as much as most, regardless of vintage. Chocolate malty aroma, a bit above average mouthfeel. Chocolate, nutty, caramel, raisin, earthy. Sweetish, and perhaps too much.

A: The beer is hazy brown in color. It poured with a short white head that quickly died down, leaving only a thin collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Quite fruity in nature, there are moderate aromas of sweet candied plums in the nose.
T: The taste is almost a carbon copy of the smell and has flavors of sweet candied plums. Neither hops nor bitterness are perceptible. The flavors become stronger and more complex as the beer warms up.
M: It feels medium- to full-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This Doppelbock is a lot fruitier and sweet compared to other beers in the style and doesn't have any of the raisin-like aromas or flavors that you would normally expect.

2009 bottling; 9.5% ABV

Appearance: Pours a dark russet color capped by a two inch layer of beige foam that leaves some thick strands behind

Smell: Cocoa powder, caramel, pumpernickel bread, plums and nuts; undertones of spice

Taste: Cocoa powder and caramel, up front, with undertones of pumpernickel bread, plums and nuts developing through mid-palate; subtle hints of fruit cake spices appear, after the swallow, keeping the sweetness in check; the alcohol is fairly well-hidden, though somewhat discernable in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate to high carbonation; spot on for the style

Overall: So one of the best doppelbocks I have encountered comes from a French brewery in Quebec; who would have guessed but this one is a keeper

A massive Dopplebock with deep toffee flavors at the forefront.

This Dopplebock pours an onyx dark, dark brown (nearly black) with crimson highlights. A froathy off-white head forms on the beer and never lets go. Rings of sticky lace adhere to the glass in stubborn and convincing fashion.

Rich toffee, malt, and dark/dehydrated fruits give a rummy, brandy-like impression. Subtle chocolate and nutty aromas round out the robust and rich scent.

Flavors of toffee and malt lead the way while fruity flavors of plumbs/prunes, raisons, cherries, figs, and about anything else that could be dug out of a fruit cake add layers of complexity and sweet tastes. Spicy cinnamon, black pepper, and alcohol help to balance the sweet/fruity flavors and add complexity to the rich brew. No real off flavors, but the toasty/alcoholic balance can be questioned.

Sweet and malty early on but the sugary feel gives way to at dry toasty/cocoa powder finish. Spciy notes and alcohol warmth help to temper the malts but in the end the beer finishes more malty than dry.

A delicious and savory Dopplebock but the malty/sugary weight causes it to be more of a sipper than a drinkable brew (think Barleywine).

Bottle: Poured a deep brown color bock with a nice foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of semi-sweet malt with some notes of banana and cloves. Taste is also dominated by some cloves and banana ester with an excellent grain bill. Full body with a creamy texture and good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Probably one of the best that I have tasted form this brewery.

Poured into a .5 liter stein a deep mahogany color with a large fluffy lighter shade of mocha colored two finger head,it settled into a great creamy mass.Combinations of aromas abound,dark fruit,dark coffee roast,bitter chocolate,and sweet alcohol.Dark fruit really stands out on the palate from the on set with prune and raisin really hitting hard,a deeply roasted backbone thruought,a hint of anise lingers as well.Great flavors but the alcohol kicks,its a sipper,but a real good sipper.

750ml bottle. Nothing like showing up to an afternoon burger BBQ, and being presented with this as a beer option by the host. Cheers, Chris!

This beer pours a clear dark red brick amber hue, with prominent cola highlights, and three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and more or less creamy beige head, which leaves a decent array of drooping webbed lace around the glass as it lazily melts away.

It smells of roasted chocolate malt, sugary, red vinous notes, like those frozen Welch's pops my Mom used to make for us, boozy vanilla, muddled dark Eastern fruit, black tea leaves, thin honey and earthy, citrusy hops. The taste is more of the same but writ so much larger - dark chocolate, bready caramel malt, boozy figs, dates, and plump raisins, acidic black fruit, vanilla cookies, watery molasses, cola syrup, sweetened nuts, ethereal citrus cream, and more subtle earthy, leafy hops.

The carbonation is fairly soft, but palate-challenging in its playful frothiness at times, the body a heady medium weight, with a small chalky pithiness marring an otherwise sublime smoothness. It finishes on the sweet side, but well tempered at the same rate - lingering caramel malt, dark fruit and sugar, mostly - with a certain root character (beer, licorice, and weeds alike) rounding things out.

A pleasantly up-sized doppelbock, the booze quite nicely integrated, making this all seem like a big ol' slice of sozzled German chocolate cake. Given that the intensity here, when compared to this style's typical component flavours, seems so heightened, perhaps the "Grand Cuvee" naming scheme should be amended with an "Imperial" designation, along the lines of some this brewery's other more jacked-up offerings.

Poured from a longstanding bottle, the body is a clear dark mahogany. The head rises up quite readily, forming a massive three-fingered pillow of foamy tan froth. Unfortunately the retention doesn't match the zeal with which the head initially forms, and the lacing isn't really that great either.

The nose expresses nuttiness, a hint of dusty sweet cocoa, and some soft roastiness and chocolate - it's more like bittersweet chocolate than anything coffee-like.

Rich malt is the heart and soul of Les Trois Mousquetaires Doppelbock, as it should be. It's bready, toasty, sugary, caramelish, a hint cocoa-ish, and a bit chocolatey. Some leafy hops appear mid-way, and it finishes subtly roasty and nutty. As you progress through it and the alcohol builds on your palate you might find some hints of dark fruit (raisins, cherries, etc.). A solid bitterness anchors it, and although it does seem sweet at times, it never becomes cloying (probably at least partly due to the 9.5% abv).

There are better, more rounded and focused doppelbocks available (and many that mask the alcohol better), but there's also a bit of charm to the all out attack of this one. Worth trying for fans of the style.

Impressive three-finger head; leaves some chunky, but spotty, lace. Dark amber, light brown color. A very light haze.

Silky sweet smell of maple syrup and brown sugar. No notable hop.

The flavor matches the smell. Very, very sweet like an apertif. I also note a metallic tinge to the tongue. Very rich as one might expect.

Appearance: pours a dark brown color with a 1/2" head that falls quickly to a spotty surface covering.

Smell: malt and fruit sweetness is up front with a hint of alcohol tones.

Taste: big malt profile here. Toffee, a hint of milk chocolate, cherries, raisins, and prunes are most notable. Bitterness is moderate and alcohol is noticeable and warming.

Mouthfeel: medium-heavy in body. Smooth throughout with a light syrupy finish. Aftertaste is long as the flavors last.

Drinkability: this is a malty beer that is hearty but is to be sipped over a long session. Flavors improved as it warmed.

On tap at Sydney's Local Taphouse Canadian SpecTapular.

Cloudy deep "brune" colour, with a good and solid head of creamy cream bubbles. Very heavy in the glass. No visible carbonation, but the beer is rather opaque. Looks good.

Vinous characters on the nose, hints of oak matched with aromas of chocolate sauce and leavened with an odd crushed strawberry sweetness.

Taste is big, rich, sweet and exceptional. Bug syrupy chocolate notes, with sweetness gleaned from some fresher sugary dark-fruit characters. Boozy head is tempered by some lovely german ale yeast esters welling around through the back. It's long and languid - no dryness on the back.

A really lovely beer. It might just be a tad off stylistically, but if you take it as an interpretations, it's extremely interesting, flavoursome and delicious.

Caged and corked bomber, $11.99 @ DeCicco's In Arsley, NY. Let me get this straight, German style beer, in a Belgian style bottle, brewed in Canada...interesting... Pours a very dark shade of brown under a quite puffy dark tan head, mid level retention then a moderate collar, tiny bubble film, spaced out light lace. The nose is full of caramel malts, and light chocolate. Malts o'plenty, caramel, dark bread, chocolate malted, good depth of flavors, complexity and malty goodness. Alcohol present but in the background. Well done, highly enjoyable brew.

Pours 1/2 finger of tan head. Color is dark brown.

Aroma: Caramel, plums, cherries, chocolate. Malty and sweet. Dark dried fruit flavors.

Taste: Roasty and malty. Sweet flavors. Cherries, plums, raisins, caramel, toffee. Pretty malty.

Mouthfeel: Creamy and smooth. Medium bodied with a medium to high amount of carbonation. Ends sweet and malty.

Overall, decent doppelbock, but fairly average. Decent drinkability. Some decent flavors.

Grande Cuvée Doppelbock has the colour of a roasted fig and enough sediment in the bottom of the bottle to muck up clarity. Still, the edges reveal cognac highlighting which provide this fairly opaque beer with a little spot of brightness. Its head looks like an old beehive, thick as honeycomb (and leaves a like pattern on the glass).

The aroma showcases lots of date and fig fruitiness as well as accompanying notes of iced tea, dried berries, purple plums, toasted almonds, cola, sarsaparilla, baking spices, honeyed-nuts, and orange zest. It's the kind of beer where it's easier to list what I'm *not* smelling.

Apparently “doppel” is German for "delicious" - where as Helles Bocks feature only one flavour (bready malt) and so-called 'Traditional' Bocks fare only slightly better, Doppelbocks offer perhaps the most multi-layered succulence of any beer style. This example tastes of dried cranberry, bruised plums, raisins, pumpernickel bread, gingerbread, and toffee and nut brittle.

Another note about Doppelbocks, they typically provide one of the longest tastes ever. Odd for a lager it's true, but this sticky-sweet mouthfeel makes for a rich, gooey, almost treacly texture that's awash with dark fruits, toasted bread, orange peel and light dustings of cocoa powder and caramel. Like the never-ending song, this taste just goes on and on my friends.

Les Trois Mousquetaires Doppelbock is as classic an example of the style as iconic brands like Optimator, Celebrator, Salvator, or Korbinian. Indeed, while the Germans are responsible for the style's gold standards, this Quebecois brewery is making a push for their title. This beer is complex enough to attract the attention of a cryptologist; it's a mystery how it gets so delicious.

Poured on tap into a snifter glass at Churchkey DC.

Faint dark red for the body with a light tan collar presented. Spider like lacing around the glass while drinking, too bad it's not in a tall pilsner or something.

Nose is very sweet. Candy licorice. Slight tobacco notes. Syrup. A slight hint of smoke with a little light roast char. Quite nice and varied but sweetness does dominate.

Palate is extremely sugary and sweet. Lots of maple like sugars but with a very thin body. Woody notes but a sawdust like feel while swallowing. Berry red qualities on the finish to match as well. Mouthfeel is very wet and there's no depth to this or malt coating.

This has a real nice complex and diverse palate, but it is just way too sweet and far too watery for a doppelbock for my tastes.

750 ml corked and caged bottle, 8.7%.

Pours a crystal clear dark ruby red, some brownish highlights, huge and fluffy light tan head forms, this needs some careful pouring, big chunks of lace stick, huge layer, looks nice.

Smell is neat, very sweet and fruity, big iron note, dark cherry and some spice, caramel, biscuit, very malty, brown sugar, raisins, a bit of alcohol, pretty solid.

Taste is nice too, very sweet and malty but not overly so, raisin and some iron, caramel, brown sugar, lots of dark fruit, dates/raisins, cherries, nice sweet finish, very rich.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with high carbonation. Carbonation was definitely a distraction but the beer became a lot more enjoyable over time when it dropped out a bit.

Bottle shared with Steve and Zach, 750ml into some tulips. Spring 2011 bottling, listed at 8% alcohol.

Poured a dark brown with some burgundy highlights, and some darker reds around the edges when held to the light. Big fluffy tan head initially, but fades to almost nothing, and leaves behind an extremely thin collar. Nose has some dried fruits, sweet malt characteristics, and some earthy and woody notes - almost akin to a softer version of what I remember picking up in their Altbier. Taste continues these sweet woody and earthy notes, with some candied flavours in there as well. Big, sweet and malty - fairly appropriate and standard from what I've seen in the style. Some spicy wood comes through in the finish, with touches of caramel and alcohol. Full mouthfeel, and low carbonation. A unique take on the style I think, and something I'd easily recommend.

A: Mahogany that's so deep, it's almost black; tan head, thin ring of retention, some lacing.

S: Plenty of dark fruit & raspberry candy aroma, beer-nuts, light floral & grassy spicing, hint of herbal hops & a sherry-like alcohol nose.

T: Initial impression was 'wow, this is amazing'. But after only a few sips the alcohol really takes over. Dark fruit bread, cocoa (with some roastiness as smooth as an oatmeal stout), nuts, dark caramel, peppery spicing, slightly herbal, good bitterness, assertive alcohol.

M: Fairly full body has a hint of residual sweetness, a nice protein smoothness and a very drying, alcohol finish. Well-crafted and impressive for its strength.

D: It's pretty warming.

Pours a mild brown color with a brown, one-finger head into my glass. Looks good for the style.

Aroma is full of sweet, appealing malt with a decent plum/raisin component to it.

Taste is chock full of rich, chewy malt that never gets too sweet but still manages to take on a feel of molasses, finishing sweet at the back of the throat.

Mouthfeel is full of lingering sweet, chewy malt. Very nice mouthfeel.

Overall, a nice regional example of the style. Certainly worth partaking in.
