2009 bottle.
Poured into my Schneider & Brooklyner Hopfen Weisse glass a clouded and somewhat murky burnt orange with a large fluffy off white head that settles into a creamy mass.Vanilla and candied orange aromas are quite strong,sweet alcohol notes come into play as the beer warms as well.Whoo this is a big sweet monster on the palate,clove and vanilla yeasty notes to go along with that candied orange,the sweetness is not really held in check,I would say as I drink more it rears its head more.Full and creamy the mouthfeel somewhat counter balances the sweetness but its a sipper.Anyone who thinks there getting a "big" weizen will get a shock,its a big weizen,a really big sweet weizen.

Summer 2011 bottle. 8%. Probably past its prime, but I'd rather try it than not!

Light golden in colour with a large white head. Good retention.

Wheat is clearly present in the nose, to no surprise. Some breadiness and some floral and grassy hop scents. Lemon. A bit of caramel.

Taste is pretty faithful to the nose. Wheat, grassy hops, lemon, caramel, bread. Some banana but not a lot. Alcohol is noticeable. Somewhat unusual. I wouldn't call this an APWA, though neither is it a traditional weizenbock. Not bad but not a real winner, in my view.

Pretty highly carbonated, medium bodied, alcohol noticeable.

Overall, pretty good but not great. I expect that it would be better if I had managed to get a fresher bottle. It's not bad but could use some work. I imagine the 10% version must have been far too boozy, because even the 8% comes across quite strongly.

Ete (Summer) 2009. Marvelously murky and brassy pumpkin orange with sunny Sunkist accents. The pour produced almost three fingers of golden ecru colored mousse that is lightly creamy and looks good from creation to dissipation... which takes a while. Glass coverage could be more extensive.

The aroma is an equal combination of caramel malt, hefeweizen and alcohol. The first is a surpise (pale malt would've worked better) and the last two are pretty much as expected. Let's hope the fruitiness isn't quite so boozy on the palate.

Imperial Weizen is decent big beer that comes across as more of a BSAA (Belgian strong amber ale) at this point. The use of toasted-earthy-nutty malt partially covers up what should be the flavor focus. That is, hefeweizen yeast. A little more alcohol mellowing would have been good too.

The flavor profile is akin to caramel-dipped bananas covered with toasted nuts and bitter tea leaves... with a splash of brandy. This is a unique ale if nothing else, but it doesn't rise to the heights of the world's best Imperial weizens. Warming takes off some of the rougher edges, but doesn't otherwise change things.

The mouthfeel is actually a co-highlight. It's at least medium-full, lightly slick, lip-sticky, and the bubbles add just the right amount of energy. Not Belgianesque, but solid.

Les Trois Mousquetaires Imperial Weizen Grande Cuvee is interesting beer that doesn't quite make it over the hump. Fresher might have been better, but then again, an even more raw alcoholicity would not have done it any favors. Not recommended.

Grand Reserve 2011. Only 8% ABV as per the label.
Poured in to Duvel tulip.

A - Pale straw yellow with a small amount of white head that quickly dissipated.

S - Belgian yeast up front with almost a slight funky aroma to it. Bready malts and a touch of sweet caramel with a light floral hop presence.

T - A crisp bitterness up front from the hops. Belgian yeast, cloves, light banana & citrus flavours. The malts provide some semi-sweet bready flavours. The alcohol is not well masked at all here, which seems to be a theme in LTM beers.

M - Medium body; light to moderate carbonation.

A - Pours a red amber color with very thin lacing ring, no head from the start, no carbonation, and very viscous as it sticks to the glass like clear syrup. Appearance is thick.

S - Sweet and heavy caramel/toffee candy sugar, alcohol, and bready malt, slightly medicinal. The look or aroma does not resemble a wheat beer, smells more like a Doppelbock.

T - Medicinal, cloying sweetness with pronounced alcohol warming in the back of the throat that lingers for many minutes. Sweet caramel toffee malt that starts out on the cloying side until midway through when some faint lemon citrus bitterness surfaces as a poor attempt to keep the cloying sweet malt barely under control. There's some light oak notes buried in there as well as a little bit of clove spice at the very, very end.

M - Thick bodied, slick, viscous, and velvet as it glides over the tongue.

O - A cloying, boozy mess. Then again, this bottle is three years old, I'm looking forward to locating a 2012 and revisiting my review. If you still find a 2009 on the shelf, maybe best to pass it up.

pour is golden a shit.. honesty. I expected this to be a nice bottle conditioned beer, and it is the clearest goldenest color I have seen in a beer.
nose is full of hay and grass...
taste is exactly what I would expect from the nose... hay... boring hay. booze comes through, to break up the boring... but it is ultimately boring.... this is just an average imperial whit... though I can think of any other imperial whit... so I guess this is great?

A very strong wheat ale that bears no relation to the "American Wheat Ale" style: syrupy malt, caramel, and ethanol flavors dominate. Further, while the label seems to suggest usage of a German yeast strain (claiming tastes of vanilla, clove, and banana), I don't notice any of these flavors. This is probably closest to a wheat wine, a bottle best shared among many friends, and generally rather average in my opinion.

A slightly hard pour produces a head of 1.5cm, dirty white in color, which has fairly average retention, lasting a minute or so. The receding foam leaves a modest amount of lacing along the sides of the glass. Body is dark copper colored, with light bringing out burnt orange, red, and brown hues. Body has a strong opacity, but is not fully opaque. Carbonation is visible, though a bit sluggish.

Aroma is fairly pleasant for the style, with notes of heavy caramel, mild toasted nuts, and noticeable, but not overpowering ethanol. Slightly oxidized by this age as well, as could be expected.

Tasting opens with plum, Bosc pear, dates, and grape-like fruity esters, all tangled up with heavy caramel sweetness and some obvious ethanol. Mid-palate finds continued caramel, heavy ethanol, a bit of bourbon character. Back of palate continues with heavy, syrupy malts; caramel; and very noticeable ethanol. Aftertaste is of syrupy malt sugars, caramelized sugar, and heavy ethanol.

Beer is heavy to medium-heavy in body, with moderate levels of carbonation. Very rich, a definite sipper. The resulting mouthfeel is smooth across the palate, with fairly high ethanol levels. The high ethanol content and resulting burn across the tongue, throat, and heat in the nostrils makes it difficult to want to drink more than half a glass of this.

2009 vintage 750 ml poured into pint glass

A- Cloudy, looks a lot like apple cider. Dark copper color. About a 1" head with lots of chunky sediment floating around.

S- Wet vegetables. This strange aroma juxtaposes the other sweet and matly smells coming from the beer.

T- VERY strange, and the taste is quite similar to the smell. The vegetables come out in a big way, ending with a musty taste like if you licked the basement floor. The sweetness from the malts is what keeps this beer together. That, and the slight bitterness from hops at the end.

M- A thicker mouthfeel than expected. A bit grainy, as well.

O- Meh. This is a very strange brew that I would recommend only for the more adventurous palettes. Thick taste without thick flavor to back it all up (last sentence from my notes, I guess it is what I thought when drinking the beer).

Reviewed on 12/31/2009. Bottle. Pours a murky orange brown with a small white head. Aroma of stale wheat and odd sugary malt. Flavor of sweet orange chewable vitamins and old malt. Probably an old bottle (although I don't know for sure). This was pretty disgusting, but I will try to update my rating if I can get a fresher bottle.
