"Wow now that is some head" is the first thing that comes to mind when I vigorously pour this one and get half dark tan head and half jet black body. Leaves large size holes of fat lace as it fades. Very nice hoppy nose for a porter. Malt feel is also balanced in the smell. Slightly soured as it enters the mouth. It is actually thinner than what I had expected from the nose and look. Sour hoppy feel is dominent on the palate and finish. Overall the soured maltiness is the base of the mouthfeel. I cant say it is the most drinkable, could be a little more balanced.

Poured out to a nice coffee black appearance with a short lived head. No lace. Low carbonation. Aromas of chocolate and coffee were easily detected and very rich. Flavor was malty and chocolatey, with a slight buttery smoothness on the palate. Decent mouthfeel could've been improved by better carbonation. The drinkability was again affected by the lack of carbonation, which made me think I had cold coffee in my mouth. Still a decent offering. Worth a try.

Sample at the brewpub: Blackish color with a medium and dense tan head that dissipates slowly. Sheets of lacing coat the glass. The aroma is equal parts malt and coffee. Medium-bodied and smooth with chocolate, coffee and malt flavoring. The finish is roasty but short with a weak showing of hops on the finish. This one started off well and ran out of gas a bit, but still above average overall.

Very dark body with a bit of lace. Bit of smoke, carbonation about right. Malty aroma. Quite drinkable. Usual suspects of chocolate malt and a tad coffee, neither standing out. Mouthfeel is on the full side.Serviceable porter and not to be missed if here.

Drank at the brewpub as part of the sampler...A medium brown pour with light tan head...The aroma is nice, tons of super sweet chocolate a little bitterness but not a ton...The taste again is pretty sweet, not badly balanced. The feel is pretty light, but makes it pretty easy to drink.

One of the better Grizzly beers.

Originally reviewed on January 21, 2005. On tap at the brewpub. A pour of dark brown, with a creamy tan head. Aroma of light molasses. Flavor is extremely rich, melded from smoke, bacon, coffee, chocolate and toast. Lots of heavy cream, molasses and honey. Touch of toffee and brown sugar. Palate is a touch sticky, but the suprising dose of hops keep in clean. Very respectable.

A standard on tap at Grizzly Peak my first time ordering on my fourth trip.Poured a dark cola color with small but well sustained off white head, aroma dont really jump out at ya but they are nice roasty with a unsweetened chocolate presence with some lingering earth.A solid porter its highly roasted with a bit of of sweetness going on like molasses/brown sugar and notes of coffee.A tad thin but not overly so just a good solid porter here.

On draft at the brewpub BBQ place in A2. Probably GPs best offering. Pours dark brown to black with a small light brown head. Smells of deep coffee, slight chocolate, and some dirt. Taste is a nice balance of rich mocha and bitter hops, with an earthy coffee and hop finish to boot. Pretty robust mouthfeel but goes down unexpectedly easy. This is my go to when we eat here.

A - Nice looking black beer that was mohogany on the edges. Brown head left some nice looking lace behind.

S - Some coffee, cocoa, slight roast. Pretty standard and good stuff for the style

T - There's some good coffee and espresso on this that bring the taste about in a pretty straight forward manner at first. Nicely bitter on the end, with some surpring fruity ethers which give it a very nice touch and a note of complexity.

M - Creamy, lower carbonation, little thin, but not bad.

O - One of the better beers I had here at Grizzly Peak. Went down pretty easily, and it's enjoyable.

I sampled this at the Michigan Brewers Guild Summer Fest.

A: Cola-coloured with an off-white head, touch of lace.

S: British fruity esters, chocolate, nut, bread.

T: Bready, mocha, good bitterness, nut bread, slight acidity.

M: Moderate body is somewhat creamy. Carbonation is moderate.

D: Good.
