I have been here on numerous occasions over the years. At first I loved the place, but it seems to have gone down hill somewhat as of late. The atmosphere is the best thing about this place. It is dimly lit and it feels kind of like you are in a really nice lodge-like building, but in an old downtown building- very unique. I used to be in love with the food (the cheddar and ale soup is still to die for), but it seems to be served cold more than hot anymore and they no longer have their home-made mustard. They do have some unique options on their menu, but it tends to be more bland than exciting and it is like $8 for a burger, with the toppings being a la carte and the fries being extra too- a tad expensive if you ask me. The beer is worthwhile- their Oktoberfest was a very odd but satisfying take on the style. It is obvious that this place is a restaurant first and a brewery second, but there is a decent selection beer-wise, just nothing all that exciting. I would love to see one of these Ann Arbor breweries try a Russian Imperial Stout or even a DIPA or even something a little off the wall. There was just your standard pale ale, red ale, ESB, golden ale, porter, Irish stout, Oktoberfest... But I suppose they have to keep the passers by happy. The last thing that I will discuss is the service... It has always been average, but the last two times I have been kind of disappointed. When I went about a year ago (I didn't go for a year because of this), the waitress was fine until we were done with our food. Then we sat there for about 25 minutes and we realized that things were getting excessive. Then we began looking for her, and she was serving all of the tables around us but neglecting us. This went on for another 15 minutes before I decided to go find a manager and she must have thought I was going to leave without paying when she asked "Oh, do you want your check?" I just glared at her and said "Yes. Yes I do." This last time I went the waitress gave me the wrong beer, then forgot about my date's appetizer, then brought me the wrong food and just seemed to be very confused most of the evening. Overall, it is worth a try if you don't have to wait a long time, but if the place is crowded, experience has told me your service will suffer.

Their motto might as well be ‘Come here for the service, stay for the service’… because the food wasn’t cutting it and the beers are nothing to get excited about. But the servers were across the board fantastic.

I don’t usually order food when I go out to beer bars and I wonder how much that would change my experience. This time was an exception. I ordered the mushroom burger and received a gummy, mushy mushroom patty---not a serving of sautéed mushrooms, or grilled portabellas, as I had pictured. The fries come at an extra charge, and the pickle was sclerotic. Whether it was a house made picked or not it tasted processed.

Tried this establishment on a recent trip to Ann Arbor; what a disappointment. First impressions are said to be everything and our bartender's attitude set the tone. We only stayed for one beer because to the service. My selection the Bear Paw Stout was good, but not great. The Chicken Quesadillas were tasty and portion size adequate. There are a number of much better places in Ann Arbor to enjoy a beer and it's obvious the locals know this because the Grizzly Bear was empty (on a Saturday afternoon) and the other places packed.
