Market street is In my top two for places to buy beer and absolutely the top in terms of a knowledgeable staff that can help you track down particular beers. Neat space and great location by the downtown mall. Check out the free beer tastings Wednesday nights with Clinton! Great mix and match single bottles available and large VA beer section. They also have a surprisingly good grocery section with cheese, meats, bread and other picnic goods. Of course, their Friday night wine tasting is a charlottesville institution.

Market Street is located in a cool (in both senses) little basement right on E Market, there's some 2 hour street parking here and a garage nearby as well, it's also just down the road from Feast (go there)

it's a bit of a combination store that covers a few bases - wine, beer, and a selection of gourmet foods and snacks...cheese, bread, coffee, sauces, etc...with the most space dedicated to wine

as previous reviewers have mentioned, the selection is modest, but what's there is, for the most part, quality; small single selection, beers arranged by origin with American, Belgian, German, and UK breweries all represented, a few chilled selections, yeah there's some good stuff here, but there's just not much of it and I feel that anything here should be readily available at other establishments with more to choose from

of course, they're working within the space limits they have, which is totally understandable and not a reason to avoid a place at all, but unfortunately the service didn't feel the void

the clerk working didn't even make eye contact when I walked in the door, and I was left for a second wondering which of the two people in-store was a customer and which worked there, he then helped the existing customer with his beer and immediately retreated back to the wine room to work on computer inventory or something, forcing me to go snag him in order to check out, and not particularly exuding geniality

quality seemed good, everything was clean and the basement environment tends to keep light and heat away

honestly, I think that the lower-rated Beer Run is a much better beer store, I'd stop in again if nearby, but wouldn't go out of the way

An awesome little place buried under the streets of Charlottesville's downtown area. Fantastic ambiance with old wooden floors and cavernesque passageways. The main draw of the place seems to be its completely righteous wine selection, and it IS righteous, but Market Street Wineshop and Grocery also boasts a bodacious beer selection - running the gamut of Belgians, IPAs, local micros, American micros, and the like - all packed into a tiny little corner of the store. The selection of food is lacking, but what they have is very interesting. Gourmet cheeses, breads, and imported jarred foods abound.

The service is friendly, but sort of unhelpful when it comes to beer knowledge. The employee seemed to know a lot about wine though.

It's easy to overlook thanks to a tiny sign and the fact that it is in a basement, but it is definitely worth a visit if you are in the Charlottesville area.

Nice place in the basement of a building near Charlottesville's downtown mall.

Nice selection of breads/chocolates (and wine of course) to go along with their beer.

A really good selection of Virginia beers, something that I appreciate it. Nice selection of US and International beers. I can't really speak to the service as I didn't ask any questions while I was there, but the guy who rang me up was very nice.

Good selection, and the prices were more reasonable than I expected from a small shop like theirs. Definitely have a return trip in my future.

In the basement of an old office building on the north side of the pedestrian mall. Not far from Court Square or South Street. Parking can be an issue here.

My lament - been coming here off and on for the last 15 years and have watched the floor space devoted to beer slowly recede. The space used for coffee and cheese used to be devoted to beer. Sigh.

Good to very good selection. Service can range from ok to outstanding, depending on who is working. Without asking, they have held on to things for me knowing that I would be stopping in.

Picked up a good surprise today - Steven's Point Maibock. Haven't seen that anywhere else.

Prices are a little better than other shops, especially when buying in bulk.

The building is very nice. I always wind up getting chocolate and port for the wife - which makes it easier for me to come back!

I've been here before and picked up some Nugget Nectar - a couple of years ago. Just stopped in recently and really noticed the beer stocked a little on the haphazardly side. They have a decent selection but there's not a great deal of differentiation from other stores in the area; not that beer's an afterthought but this crew seems to definitely focus on the wine. That's not a problem.

There's an entrance into the side of a building on the bottom floor that gives it a wooden basement or "below deck" feel to it. 80% of the store is occupied by wine; no surprise there. 20% has the beer in a walkway with a large number of shelves in the back...as well as a small cooler.

I recall having decent service at my previous visit related to wine; this time I really didn't see anyone venture back to the beer section. No big deal, 'cause they have what they have.

It seems to be a smidge pricier than other local outlets - maybe 50 cents to a buck higher per 6er. Maybe it's the downtown rent; who knows.

Overall, not a bad place. If I worked downtown this would be a great place to stop and grab something on the way home for dinner that night, be it beer and/or wine. Maybe not quite necessary to go out of your way to check out though.

I like this place a lot. The wine and beer selections are eclectic and the owner, Robert, is extremely friendly and helpful. This is entirely a nicer place than the newer location out on Route 29. The beer selection isn't vast, but it is thoughtful and includes a nice mix of East Coast and West Coast standouts and a few beers that you won't find anywhere else in town, like the Speakeasy line from San Fransisco. The cold case isn't huge, so most of the selections are warm, but there is enough of a cold selection to make you happy in a pinch. They have a decent selection of large bottles and a reasonable, but not vast, collection of Belgians and other imported choices. They seem to do a good job bringing in seasonal offerings from major craft brewers.
