Didn't think I would be trying this one anytime soon! Generously poured from a 750mL. The body is a deep hazy magenta with amber and copper hues. Carbonation bubbles line the glass initially, and a nice clean white low carbonated head rests on top.
I smelled this beer for a great two minutes before tasting. Decadent! Unbelievable cabernet sauvignon accented by ultra tart lemon and horse blanket. Very vinous in nature, with a beautiful tart cherry and raspberry scent that lingers ever so delicately in the background.
I didn't think that it was possible for the smell to be topped, and then I took my first sip. WOW!!! In addition to what was found in the smell, my palate pulled through the complexity to discover extraordinary oak, vanilla, and honey flavors. Everything blended together perfectly, I thought I was in heaven. Proof that Bullfrog produces some of the best sour ales available, this beer deserves every bit of recognition it has received and then some. This tasted near perfect with +3.5 years on the base beer, I can not wait to see what more time will do to it.

A huge thanks to Mike for this one. How often do you get to have a 12oz. pour of such a rare and unique beer? 750ml corked and caged bottle into Drie Fonteinen stemware. Reviewed from notes.
Pours a 2 finger dark, frothy, cream colored head with good retention. Lacing is think, sparse, and stringy. Thin, oily legs. Beer is a dark, clear amber. Real nice.
Nose is huge, honey notes. Very unique. Mild cherry and red fruit tartness. Pretty mellow but well balanced. Some oak overtones too. Moderately aromatic. Nice.
Opens tart cherry and red fruit tartness. Prickly tart in the middle with big, honey overtones that help smooth out the flavor. Finishes tart, oak and cherry. Mellow, clean aftertaste. The honey is very prominent in this one and really helps smooth out the entire experience. Great balance. Incredibly unique.
Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth and foamy in the mouth and goes down aggressive and prickly. Finishes messy with a sticky but clean aftertaste. Solid.
Out of the big 3 Bullfrog beers, this one is definitely better than Blue Cheer. The honey is uniquely prominent and makes its mark known in this beer. Definitely unique, this one isn't going to change much in the coming years. Definitely worth trying if you get the chance.

A - Pours dark red, with a light creamy head
S- Sweet dark fruit, berry/ cherry mixed with a woody oak character. Sour grapes and acidity come through as well
T- Sour grapes, dark fruit with a ton of oak. nice balance between sour and sweet, extremely well balanced. Light to moderate funk from the age.
M- Moderate to light carbonation with a dry sweet finish
O- I cant believe how well this bottle held up. It was delicious, and a great experience

750 ml corked and caged foil topped bottle into a couple of goblets. Big thanks to HopDerek for splitting this with me.
Pours a deep & hazy ruddy colored amber with a tight finger of off-white head. Retains with about half that size, settling into a smooth and creamy layer which stays rich and leaves back a delicate latticework of lacing. The aroma is very astringent smelling up front with oaky qualities, as well as an abundance of tart fruit that settles into the middle section of the nose. I'm actually having a tough time separating the fruit from the tartness of the Brett, they are so smooth and well integrated together. Candied sugars and honeyed sweetness glides underneath as well, adding an extra layer to this already pretty complex bouquet. A bit of warmth eventually emerges as well, giving this some extra gravitas in the nose.
The taste is vinous red wine character coming out to me from the get go, that coupled with astringency of the barrel in the backend of the profile really forms the base of the taste here for me. It's in the middle that the fun happens. The crispness of the Brett mingles with spices and fruity notes of green apple, white grapes, and lemon zest. Toasted malts, honey, and vanilla mix in to give this a sweet candy feel that helps balance some of the tartness out. At no point does this ever become acidic or souring, instead overall imparting an extremely satisfying tart feel here, with the flavors intermingling effortlessly and leaving a heavy dryness on the palate. The mouthfeel is medium bodied in the feel and a little fuller in the carbonation, with a prickly feel at first that helps the tartness pop and then a thicker and more viscous layer underneath, which carries a lot of the woody astringency and a good bit of any alcohol beef that is present. Speaking of alcohol, it's presence in no way inhibits the drinkibility of this in any way, shape, or form. Instead the feel remains very easy, really adding to the crispness and refreshing quality of this.
Wow, what an excellent beer! Wonderfully complex yet balanced, with the Saison, Brett, and barrel all coming together into one exquisite package. And a wonderfully easy drinkibility for a beer of this size is only the icing on the cake. This Bullfrog offering did not disappoint.

A foil-wrapped, corked and caged bottle purchased at the brewpub.
A: The ale is well, if not over-carbonated. After popping the cork, a slow stream of foam began to stream out of the bottle. Two quick pours averted a complete catastrophe. The saison is much darker than just about all that I've come across (Philosopher's Stone stand out), a ruddy brown color that is opaque. The boisterous carbonation has maintained a steady head, one finger in size.
S: Funky, tart sour notes emerge from the nose. They mix with sweet honey and vinous wood. This is not your average saison, coming across with much more wine.
T: Delicious! The tartness is harsh, biting with a citric sting. The wood has imparted a thick, red wine taste, heavy almost, that sits just below the bitterness. The oak adds a vanilla flavor as well as some peppery bite. The honey that is listed on the label gets lost behind the oak and funk but it really isn't missed. In fact I think that it would add too much to the ale, as it is I can't definitively call this a saison. The dryness of the red wine barrels leaves burgundy fruits flicking at the tastebuds.
M: The tartness and carbonation do a great job of cleansing the palate. The vinous barrel aging is intense and lingers for a very long time.
D: The abv is unknown but the ale feels big. I split a bottle with ksak to ensure that I stay sober until PSU-Illinois kick-off tonight.

It poured a rusty, murky, orangey brown. Some spotty lace dotted the tulip glass, and a webby skim stretched out across the surface. It was well carbonated with visible bubbles surfacing in the foam. Notes of cranberry, dried dark fruits and cherry pit in the nose, with a clear origin from a wine barrel. Acetic, dry woody Cab barrel flavor, it certainly overstimulates the salivary glands in the best way. Earthy currants, with a firm gripping tartness, and oaky traces in the dry finish. Spritzy and prickly tart feel. It flashes quickly on the palate and dries out just as lightning fast. Complex and interesting, I had no expectations before trying this. Thanks again Alex for the opportunity.

fantastic pour here with a golden amber color that was completely hazed over and cloudy with a full three inches of head sitting on top of the glass that just dripped down the sides throughout the entire session.
aroma is deep hops and herbs right from the front. dense citrus and floral lavender and herbs come through very clearly and brightly as the smell is intoxicating and just remarkable. i really am not paying attention to those panning this one as i thought it was remarkable. such a bright and flavorful beer. deep citrus hops, lavender and chamomile, hints of herbs, fresh grasses, light spices, just sublime. smooth,

Big red wine flavors against a fruity, sour base. Tart. Nice wheat component to smooth things out a bit. Lively. Slight raspberry notes. Caramel notes.
Very good, and quite interesting to have this side by side with the base beer (BeeSting).

Beekeeper is a hazy burgundy color in the glass, topped by a small but lasting off white head. Dark for a saison, but nice to look at.
The aroma is extremely vinous. Dry red wine, lactic sourness, tart cherries and raspberries are prominent. There's a reserved funky, musty character and a hint of leather that add depth, but the wine barrel is very dominant, almost excessively so.
Huge red wine flavor, a touch of raspberry sweetness, strong tannins, tart cherries. The wine barrel character is overwhelming, but it's delicious. High carbonation helps cut the heaviness of the body, though I still feel that it's a touch syrupy for a saison, albeit a bastardized one. The finish is heavy on the tannins, mildly acetic and slick, but ultimately drying. This is unique and quite good, but it's not something I'd want to drink often or in large quantities.

Appears a hazy, dark mahogany with a small off-white head that slowly fades into a mild, floating collar. Scattered rings and streaks are left around the glass.
Smell is of cabernet, French oak, vanilla, some barnyard funk, black grapes, and brown sugar.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with logs of cherry pie, and vinuous notes pulling through the tart cherries, vanilla, and oak.
Mouthfeel is light-medium bodied with a tart oakiness rounding out the finish. This is like a wonderful Flemish Red. The cabernet notes really make this a winner. I couldn't stop coming back to this one. If only I had more.

750ml bottle (thanks Tom!). I've had this before and glad I waited to rate it until I had time to really give it some justice.
Poured a deeper and cloudy amber (almost brown) color with an averaged sized off white head. Lots of big floaters at the bottom of the bottle. Aromas were very and nicely vinous (Cabernet), grapes, woody, a little funky, and light honey.Tastes of the same vinousness, funky, woody, vanilla, cherries, earthy, and grapes. I was really into the Cabernet barrel aging. Lively body with a dry finish. I wish I bought a lot more of these when I had the chance!

A - Surprisingly dark on the pour, with a little bit of an off-white head that faded into some random spos and decent lacework.
S - Some decent funk, fascinating barrel influence that gave it some soft vinous notes. The real kicker on this beer is the underlying honey that comes through, amazing.
T - I'm not a huge saison fan, but I love this one. It's got some greatly complex slight tart notes and some wonderful honey sweetness.
M - Nice carbonation, medium bodied.
O - This beer is wonderful and unlike anything I've ever had. Out of the saisons I can remember having, this possibly is my favorite.

L - not very exciting hazy milk chocolate brown with a consummate khaki wide ring of foam.
S - Blueberry, blackberry, raspberry, cherry over an almost oud bruin acetic/lactic base.
T - Much like the nose, with all of the aforementioned berries playing with cherry, lactic acid, mild oak, and even a citrus rind custard finish.
M - Soft and smooth, with a viscous carbonation at the front and middle and a tannic briskness in the finish.
O - Delightful stuff. I had no idea what to expect, but this is damn tasty!

A-Hazy muddy reddish-brown with a light tan and rock steady head. Good carbonation bubbles up from the bottom of the glass. Nice lace left behind.
S-Tart, sour notes meld with sweet honey and astringent oak. The cabernet sauvignon aging has done this brew very well.
T-Superb! Tartness citrus bite is well temptered by the dry red wine and oak bitterness. Lesser notes of vanilla and pepper come through thanks to the barrel aging. The honey comes in in the background by mellowing out the dryness with a bit of sweetness.
M-Medium-light bodied with a long lasting tartness and a pleasant dry finish.
D-Wonderful! It is no wonder that this brew took gold honor at the 2008 GABF. I have had this beer on a few occassions and finally got around to giving it a proper review. I was happy to share this with other respectful BA's.

Acquired in a trade, it took me a while to find this one. Caged and corked bottle wrapped with foil. I'm greeted with a loud "pop" as I remove the cork. I immediately smell the tart and fruity aroma. Pours a reddish brown with a 2 finger, off white head. The head lingers for a minute before it departs and leaves behind some lacing.
Aroma is very tart and funky. I can definitely notice the wine-like characteristics that Beekeeper has acquired from the cabernet barrels. Slightly spicy, oak, honey, brettanomyces, grapes.
Taste is remarkable. Extremely tart up front with some nice brett flavor and barnyard funk and vinegar. Fruity, mostly grapes, with some wood. Slightly astringent with some characteristics from the cabernet sauvignon barrels. The finish is very dry and puckering. I split this with two others and it was the perfect amount. This one takes a toll on the palate. A unique beer that I'm glad I was able to try.

A: Pours a very dark, nearly opaque reddish amber. Good head with good retention, and a moderate collar.
S: Vinous (dark / red wine), oak, something flowery, mild leather, lactic sourness, chocolate, cherries.
T: That vinous character really comes out in the flavor, and it accentuates the leather nicely. Cherries are very noticeable. An undercurrent of sourness with an acetic finish. Semi-dry. I never figured out what the floral aroma was, and the chocolate never popped up in the taste.
M: Some heat. Tannic finish. Medium bodied, with moderate carbonation. It had some buildup / residue issues with red wine and acetic flavors, so the carbonation could stand to be a bit higher.
D: It's very good, and that surprised me. I had basically ignored Bullfrog after the accusations of Bullfrog Mafia hype, but this... well, it's enjoyable.

Pours a darker brown with a thin tan head. Nose is funky sour. Obvious barrel influence with the wood tones. Vanilla is there too. Flavor is amazing. Real smooth sour tones. Slight sweet in on the mix. Minor vanilla. Subtle wood. Really. This is an unbelievable beer. Smooth liquid feel. Appropriate carbonation. This is an outstanding beer that deserves more recognition than I'm sure it will be getting for a while...if at all. If you're a sour fan, this is a must. As good as Cuvee de Castleton. Yes. I said that. This stands as one of my top 5 beers of '08. And don't ask me what the other 4 are right now because I can't really think at the moment.

I had this at the Design, drink and be merry event at Goggleworks in Reading.
Served chilled from a brown 750ml.
A - Deep caramel brown w/ a light amber highlight and unstoppable creamy head
S - Brettanomyces is all over the aroma of this w/ sweet honey hints and a dash of cinnamon, sour cherry and earthy spice(nutmeg)
M - Crisp, lively and sour -whoah! Intense! Slightly dry red grape w/ a sweet touch at the finish
T - An instensley sour funk w/ a grape and big citrusy sour almost lemony w/ deeper fruitiness and a hint of worcestershire sauce. The intensity of the medium roast malt comes out w/ slight cider hints and subtle grapeskin tannic notes. The taste is broad and has many levels to experience in the taste
D - A fabulous sour, one of the best wild ales I have had. The sour cherry and huge malt undertones give this a incredible drinkability even for 8.5%

MI Mega Tasting III, provided Jeff R aka northernbrew. Been on my wants for quite some time and the time has finally come! 750ml bottle, poured into RBSG 2010 snifter.
A - Pours a darker reddish orange, slightly rusty. Cream-colored head, quick and fizzy, then vanishes. No lace or retention to speak of after the initial pour.
S - Solid dose sour/tart notes, light acidic quality, and some oak. There's some funk still left over from the base saison beer, it seems, which really surprises me (seeing how old this beer is). Some sweet fruits are mixed in as well as some slightly sour grapes.
T - Palate is big on the oak, sour grapes, slight yeast funk. There a slight fruity sweetness on the finish, which I picked up on the nose as well. Perhaps this is some of the bugs doing? Who knows. Everything is well-balanced and enjoyable.
M - Light body, spritzy carbonation, dry oaky finish.
O - Easily the best Wild Ale I've had from Bullfrog, buy a long mile. The funk, sourness, oak, and fruity sweetness are all blended together perfectly. I wish they still make 'em like this, but now I think BF is mostly hype and a lot less show. Get this beer, if you can.

Early 2010 rate. I've had two bottles of this, the first was sublime and the second was just very nice. I'm kind of averaging the scores, but the review is from the first, amazing bottle.
Pours a slightly hazy chestnut brown, purple edges with a small soapy head and fine legs. Kind of understated nose of mild brett, wine barrel. Interesting brew here...sweet fruit, acidic vinous wine barrel, brett and lactic sourness, and a really interesting spicy quality intermingle nicely. Much different from my expectations. Chinese spices, like cloves and star anise, kind of swell up near the back palate. Somehow Oriental, with the cloves playing with these sweet and sour flavors. So different than any American sour, really such interesting depth and complexity at this age. As it opens a caramel and apple quality comes out. Depth of flavor is just endless. Freakin fantastic stuff, kind of makes me sad and happy at once.
