750ml corked and caged bottle from 2009 poured into a Russian River stemmed glass. Cork did not want to come out and actually broke in my hand trying to work it free. After an impromptu opening by corkscrew, it broke free and yielded a nice pop of carbonation...and all of the liquid stayed in the bottle - no gushers. Definitely a good start.
A - Pours a dirty almost cranberry juice reddish hue with more than a bit of brown in the palate as well. Clarity is very good and plenty of carbonation streams up from the bottom of the glass. A thin finger of off-white foam that is somewhat fizzy lingers for a short minute or so and falls to leave a thick foamy collar, bubble islands on the surface and traces of foamy lacing on the glass.
S - From several feet away, I could already smell this beer. Quite sour and tart on the nose, plenty of lactic acid and a healthy dose of acetic as well - should be nice and sour judging by the aroma. Lots of raspberry character as well, fruity, jelly/jam-like, tart, a bit of fermented fruit aroma. Funky brett aromas too, mildly barnyardy, earthy and yeasty, a bit grassy, lower woody and vanilla-y oak mixed in for good measure. Seems to become fresher and more fruity/raspberry-y as it warms up. Barnyard picks up a bit as temperature increases in the glass too.
T - Tart up front for sure, but nowhere near the intensity I expected coming from the aroma. Super fruity too - raspberry takes the lead in the flavor profile and is dominant but not overpowering. Surprisingly fresh raspberry flavor - not quite fresh picked, but still bright and juicy. Woody and earthy yeast and barrel contributions. Light cheesy/aged hop bitterness and low level funk that is noticeable but well below the level found in the aroma. A bit oxidized but surprisingly not nearly as much as I expected after 5 years in the bottle.
M - Just on the light side of medium bodied with a medium carbonation...not as high as many wilds, but plenty of fizzy life and feel on the tongue - works quite well. Dry, tart and mildly funky - leaves behind a dry earthy brett character after the swallow that is offset a bit by lingering raspberry goodness. Not quite puckering from tart/sourness, but has a firm intensity that suits my tastes nicely and brings out the raspberry character really nicely.
O - Balanced and well nuanced wild ale. One of the best raspberry wilds I have ever had and certainly the best I have had in a long time. Wasn't sure what to expect from a bottle this old and not sure why I waited so long to open it. As it turns out, it was well worth the wait. If age hurt this at all, I can only imagine the greatness it once was. Really nice raspberry character throughout and lots of subtleties to complement and back things up.
