Flanders Red Ale |  13.00% ABV

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Flemish style sour ale was initially brewed as a Belgian style quadruple ale. Oud 15 was aged for two years in second generation red wine barrels which previously held our Jaspers beer. Blended and steeped with Montmorency sour cherries and bottle conditioned with Belgian candi sugar, Oud 15 represents the culmination of 15 years of brewing, and is worthy of the commemoration.

Big thanks to paiged for picking this up!

A: The beer pulls out much like a quad: purple in color with a small light brown head. The head doesn't lace much, or stick around for too long, but it's there. The color has hints of red as well, probably from the cherries. It's murky and dark, with a decent amount of bubbles holding the body together. 4.5

S: The aroma is straight Flanders Red all the way. Big cherry notes with some booze and a hint of vinegary tartness. Sweet, but the tartness makes the mouth water just from the scents. You can tell early on that this is going to be a knock out beer. 4

T: The taste brings out the best in quads and flanders red. Big boozy character, first of all, but not as big as you'd expect from a 13% ABV beer. The tartness and delicious cherries cover the booze well. Other dark fruits, and a graininess I attribute to quads is there as well. Candied sugar, blends with the cherries well. Not medicinal or faint in any well. There's a ton going on here, but it is all extremely well balanced. The fifteen years of brewing experience that went into this beer is showing. The tartness leaves a wonderful taste on the palate at the finish. 4.5

MF: This one is a doozy. Thick and rich body with a lower than average, but appropriate level of carbonation. The drinkability is ridiculously high between the sourness and sweetness from the cherries. I feel like I'm guzzling it down. 5

O: Boy oh boy did this live up to the hype. I really wish I got to try more of Bullfrog's sour beers, but I can say Pizza Boy has a great future ahead of it. I love getting these high ABV sours from time to time. Wish I had another bottle of this to age. 4.5

my notes:
Bottle at the brewery. Very good mouthfeel. Funky, good barreling from red wine. Very good sourness.Cherry and also some orange flavour. Superiour wild/sour worth seeking out.

Pours a dark cherry color with just a little bit of head. Smell is...cherries. really nice nose on this. Taste is a very cherry-forward tartness. Awesome. This beer is drinking phenomenal. If the cherry fell off a little bit; it'd still drink really well. An above average amount of carbonation. The general consensus so far has been it doesn't taste a bit like 13%, personally I felt it would be around 7-8%. Really hides the alcohol.

Bottle is #'ed out of 506. Wish I was able to get more of this.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Bottle #415 of 506.

Appearance - Deep brown, reddish body. Pours with a khaki head that disappears quickly.

Smell - Acetic acidity. Heavy caramel malt. Vanilla. Smells like a bourbon barrel. Cherry fruitiness. Tons of oak.

Taste - Sour up front, but it blends into sweet caramel and vanilla. Very rich. Cherry fruit sourness. Oak all the way through.

Mouthfeel - Heavy, sweet, and sour at the same time. Slow drinker and pretty boozy.

Overall - Reminds me of Oerbier Reserva. Maybe even a little better.

750 ml corked and caged bottle, graciously opened by Greenplastic615. Thanks Jason!

A: Dark mahogany brownish color with an initial nice off-white/tan bubbly head. Dissipation was quick as expected though nice lacing and a thin retention ring were left behind.

S: Rich sour aromas, funk, pitted cherries, sticky caramel, burnt sugar. Notes of other various red fruits coming in too.

T: An initial tart wash covers the palate, but with it is a very sweet malty flavor. Certainly some quad-like qualities coming through. Plenty of caramel notes and sugary cherries. The finish ends clean with an almost chocolate linger. Sour/tartness is cut off.

M: Nicely carbonated, medium bodied and highly drinkable. Dangerous this is 13% ABV. Like many have commented, this easily drinks more like it's in the 6%-range.

My first Bullfrog beer and they've impressed me.

Poured from the bottle into a tasting snifter.

This is a thick beer, but I never would have guessed how high the abv was. I'm getting some nice fruity notes, perhaps cherry along with a nice sour note. There is a funk that I associate with darker beers. Just enough sweetness to balance out the sour flavors. I really enjoyed this one.
