Don't let the name fool you, we make it in a brew kettle. This porter is black in color with medium body and a roasted malty flavor.

I've been on somewhat of an epic journey this summer, making it a point to seek out and try the beers of the local brewpubs of Kansas. I got to Hank's a few weeks ago, and while I was disappointed at their lack of seasonals, I still thought enough of their beer to pick up a growler of their Porter.
64 ounce growler. Pours a very dark brown tinged with Ruby. This growler is bordering on old, having suffered a trip back in the heat and subjected to a little bit of time in my fridge. Very nice creamy tan head sits atop the beer. Aroma is rich and chocolatey. Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, almost creamy in constistency. Almost like a cream stout. Mild lacing as you continue drinking the beer. It would be interesting to have this served with nitrogen.
The first thought when attempting to describe the taste is solid. Admittedly there's some level of cardboard present this in the taste; I wouldn't mark this against the brewery but more against myself for not taking better care of the growler upon receipt. Otherwise, when drinking there's a nice coffee note with some hints of toasty bread. There's also a very nice dark chocolate syrup finish that seems to be tinged with figs. I also pick up some faint citrus hop notes, notably orange.
All of this together makes for a solidly constructed beer that neither disappoints nor wows. It aims to be a straightforward and somewhat easy drinking beer, and in that aspect it suceeds completely. Overall I was impressed with not just this beer, but all of the beers at Hanks, and I'm looking forward to making a return journey some time in the future.
