First review so bare with me. This beer is only available at Trader Joe's. I work at Trader Joe's so i drink it often when i'm broke. It is nothing special, but for 3.99 a 6 pack it is worth scraping up change the day before pay day to buy this rather than scraping up a few bucks more to buy some cheap pilsner from the "major breweries". La playa is "at it's best" when drank from a mug rather than the can. The can gives it too much of a metal taste. The finish is pretty much non existent and disappears from the tongue quickly but maybe there is a slight corn flavor to it. It does have a high alcohol content compared to similar beers. All in all, it's more of a large party beer and an "i love awesome beer but i'm broke so i'll drink this" beer.

Thanks to ericandersnavy for sharing this can.
The beer pours a clear yellow color with a white head. The aroma is nothing but corn. The flavor is nothing but corn. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. I wish I could say more about this, but this is a one-dimensional beer that should be avoided.

The first question that you have to ask yourself before spending your $3.99 at Trader Joe's is: Do I want to drink something that tastes like Corona/Modelo?
If the answer is no, then buy something else. Period.
This beer is a good and cheap version of this style. I could drink a ton of these on a hot day. La Playa would be great with a lime and some salt and it is half the price of Corona.
That being said, while I thought that this was an accurate representation of this style, there was a little too much sweet corn adjunct flavor. Not much, just a little. In fact, overall, the beer was very balanced and refreshing; however, I would want to cut come of that sweetness with a lime next time.
not my favorite style but it has it's place.

I acquired a few of these that were left over from a party and decided to try one last night. I'm really sorry I did. This is quite possibly the worst beer I've ever drank. The smell was just horrible. It smelled like literal garbage. The taste was something indescribable. It was like it was rotten. Strange aftertaste that I couldn't get past too. I had to choke it down. I won't be trying another one of these.

had a couple of these tj six packs that were brought over to the house last night and decided to drink a couple to cleanse the palate.
pours a light golden hay color with a foamy head that cracks to about two inches in height before coming through with a lot of carbonation coming up to the surface. aroma is light, lots of corn, grains, wet hay and only barely a touch of hops hit my tongue, definitely not something to write home about, but what can ya do. clean crisp, with little aftertaste other then a slight bit of light musky grass, it was over before it began.
overall nothing i would try again, although not horrible, just not my cup of tea.

pro: it's cheap.
con: it pretty much tastes like cheap.
looks like clear, straw-yellow apple juice with a fizzy head that fades relatively quickly. smells of straw, maybe some corn, a touch of tropical fruity esters which isn't half bad. but not really half good either. grainy and grassy. taste follows, but without anything pleasantly tropical about it. straw, grain, a touch of hops, but that veggie, green hop. mouth is clean, crisp, ample carbonation, just enough body to be appealing, although a touch on the watery, thin side, even for a pale lager. all in all, just doesn't do anything. though I wasn't expecting much. for the price, there are more palatable six packs of pale lagers out there.

Picked up a sixer at Trader Joe's. A little surprised to see they're an authentic Mexican lager. I presume what you see is what you get.
Golden body. No head after a minute. Corn syrup and grain in the nose. Sweet corn is the major player in the flavor with very slight floral hopping. Easy to drink in quantity.

$3.99 a six from the brand new Trader Joes in S.Salem. Actually not a bad looking lager in the glass bright yellow with a nice sized frothy white head..leaves good lace also. Aroma is simple corn and a citric tone. Taste is mostly smooth creamed corn, with a touch of sweet lemon . Not to shabby for a Mexican lager on the palate..thicker than expected. Overall not a bad simple lager..ideal for the river in the summer and at a good price.

I snagged a can of this when the wife dragged me to Trader Joe's last weekend... I wasn't expecting great things but couldn't resist a new tick for 69 cents per can.
Served in a tulip pint.
Very clear, very straw colored yellow and very fizzy. Three fingers of rocky foam sits forever. GREAT retention. Even some nice lacing. It isn't much, but I'll say thy this is the best looking pale lager I've ever seen.
Smells of virtually nothing. It isn't offensive in any sense, but it is weak. Only the mildest hints of actual beer ingredients. A little sweetness up front give way to a hint of spicy floral hops with just the merest suggestion of bitterness.
Feels about right for the style; fizzy and light.
Overall-- better than I expected, but not really impressive.

Best before 7/23/12.
Pours a clear yellow with a 1 inch foamy bone colored head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots and streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Interestingly enough, smell is exactly like apple juice. Taste is of grain and apple juice, like a grainy cider of sorts. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty poor beer with the weird apple thing going on.

Picked this up at Trader Joes as I am extremely broke and needed cervesa!
Appearnce? Well from the mouth of the can it looks like your typical yellow piss color cheap beer. Why would anyone pour this into a glass? Smell is corn but tolerable. Taste is A LOT better than expected. There is a little bit of sweetness thats offputting. Not enough to break this beer though. Light in taste and clean and refreshing for a cheap cold beer. On the cheap beer that actually tastes decent card, this shines! This is a beer that you throw in the ice chest and drink all day. $3.99 for a six pack is what I pay for cheap bombers! My new go to beer when the money is the issue.

Yet another beer from Trader's Joe. My wife, unfortunately, purchased me a six pack of this stuff. The beer exits the can a golden color with not much foam to speak of. In the nose, the adjunct is most noticeable--corn it seems to me. Light on the palate. It starts too sweet with malt, a little too sweet with corn mixing in. The finish provides some, but not much, bitterness. If I have a chance again, I think I will pass.

A cheap latin-style beer found at Trader Joes and priced at a rather paltry 3.99 for a sixpack. As far as I can tell the can is the only option for this one. That said, it's best served rather cold out of the can. It features fairly clean malt flavors and little to no real detectable bitterness. Carbonation level is high as per the norm for the style. I think it pushes a bit of a metallic flavor out in the profile and stings the tongue slightly. It does taste slightly better when poured into a pint glass as I think it knocks some of the carbon dioxide out of suspension. It has a little bit of a sweet corn flavor in the aftertaste which tastes very much like another famous latin beer usually served with lime.
Overall it's not great not terrible. Middle of the road sort of thing. It's ok if you're broke and you're like me and refuse to support the big 3 brewers.

Out of Cervecera Mexicana, the best thing thing that La Playa has going for it is that it's sold at Trader Joe's. The second best thing - as a friend who gave it to me after football pointed out - is that you can mispronounce it and say "Play on Playa". And it's always good to feel like a player sometimes.
As far as the ratings, this beer is better than Corona, and maybe on par with Miller Lite or Tecate. It looks like straw, smells like nothing - or piss, should you choose to smell your own and compare. I suppose there's also a nice taste of corn in there, which honestly kinda hit the spot in the moment. There's not much else.
It's watery feel and hydrating drinkability made for a nice can of beer post football. And, it's better than Corona. I swear it.

Crystal-clear, medium gold with slight head retention. Much richer color than many in this style.
Aroma is hugely creamed corn. And that is it.
Taste is cream corn mixed with a green-bean like bitterness. Absolutely awful.
Crisp and slightly drying with on-par carbonation; nothing wrong here.
Looks good and the mouthfeel is good, but the aroma and taste remind me of a vegetable-medley baby food.

Thanks to Jim and Nancy for handing me this beer from TJs so I didn't have to buy a whole sixer. This is another fizzy, yellow, "Cheap American Lager", better than most, not as good as some. If you're looking for an inexpensive sixer, you could do a lot worse.
A fluffy , white head that had surprisingly decent lacing. The expected sweet aroma and flavor. The body was a bit fuller than I anticipated and drinkability was also better than I had hoped. Go ahead, grab this on your cheap days.

A new beer at Trader Joe's in MN, Best Before labeled as 4-23-11
Cheap: $3.99/ sixer
A- Very light pale yellow, straw color, with a fizzy white head pours out to about 2 fingers, but diminishes before I had time to notice it was there. Sporadic medium bubbles rising, no lacing, small cap on top.
S- Very light grain, mild acetyl, noticeable esters, trace of hops in the nose.
T- Tastes like a Mexican style lager, not much flavor, very light malt body, mild acidity, grassy almost non existent hop bitterness to finish. Nothing off putting, just nothing to really talk about either.
M- Slightly buttery texture, finished with a coating on the tongue, highly carbonated, pretty clean, not real off putting flavors, watery and light.
D- On a hot day with nothing else in the house, maybe, will I purchase again...probably not, although it's worth a try, could take the place of a corona, tecate, etc.

Add a lime to an ice cold La Playa on a 100 degree day here in the Northeast---refreshing. Not complex, not fancy, not craft---it's typical Mexican style beer. You know the comparisons---for $3.99 a six pack---why not have some on hand for a a hot day when BBQ'n...
Can see running through a ton of these while hangiong on the deck!
