Rio Bravo's Mexicali Light beer pours a typical straw-colored body. A standard pour yields a couple inches of thick, bright-white foam with more staying power than one might expect. When the head finally settles, an appealing right of sticky froth caps the brew. Nice.

Sweet corn-based malt dominates the nose. No skunk is appreciable, which suggests that the brewers of this affordable light lager use fresh ingredients and quality yeast. There's nothing complex here, but there's nothing offensive, either. I'm ready for my first sip.

The taste follows the nose exactly. Light, sweet corn malt dominates throughout. The brew offers very little bitterness and no hoppy aromas. The malt is a bit sweet for a light lager. I'd tone down the sweetness a bit, use just a bit more bittering hops, and try to produce something that is truly crisp and refreshing. Still, the flavors are all spot-on for a light lager, and this beer wipes the floor with its macro-brewed north-of-the border competition. Even after the beer warms, the corny malts and musky bittering hops don't toss up the kind of skunky flavors that one has come to expect from American adjunct lagers. What's more, the brew's relatively low alcohol content (3.9%) makes it emanently drinkable.

The body is sweeter and fuller than I want in a light lager. The mouthfeel is fine, but suffers on account the quantity and sweetness of the malt.

Mexicali light is a new go-to light lager for me. I'd give it a higher score if I were scoring it only in terms of its genre.

Poured an extremely transparent yellow liquid with a tiny white head out, extremely disappointing appearance, Coors has substantially more color and head than this puppy. Outside of a beer having body parts floating in it or a big dump, this is the worst looking beer. Beer water more like it.

Aroma, light sweet cornyness going for it, not overly harsh. Just garbage taste, water, some corn made beer, a bitter alcohol bite despite this seeming to be mostly water. What the hell? Metallic mouthfeel continues, makes me realize it probably wasn't alcohol I was getting, it was probably just skunked lightstruck light beer.

This is downright terrible stuff. I mean, Budweiser has at least a lot of consistency and lacks off flavors.

330ml single clear bottle - why the hell not, I could use the amusement.

This beer pours a crystal clear, medium golden yellow colour, with two quickly disappearing fingers of thinly foamy, wan, and bubbly dirty white head, which leaves nothing but some soapy, equally non-lasting lace around the glass.

It smells of faintly grainy corn mash, acetone, and a not so subtle skunky weediness. The taste is vegetal corn grits, a further bit of nail polish remover, some edgy hydrated metal, and a lurking, enveloping musty organic skank.

The carbonation is average, no sin there (hallelujah!), the body light in weight, as desired, yet still as clammy and clingy as a mail order bride. It finishes, unsurprisingly, with a heavy accent on the aforementioned stank, delivered via a complex (?) corn sweetness that I'll be scraping off my tongue for a while yet.

I can't believe I'm thinking this, let alone writing it - give me a can of the Silver Bullet any day over this light-struck (that's being generous) dreck. A drain-pour, but I'm thinking that the purportedly low ABV won't be any help in dredging my plumbing, even. Ptooie.

Poured from a clear 11.2 oz. bottle. Has a very pale yellow color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell has lots of corn and more corn. Taste is mild, corn, some grains, a bit of skunkiness, some more corn, actually more flavor than many light beers. Feels light in the mouth and while nothing special, this ain't to bad for the style.

Part of the Summer Brews pack from Cost Plus World Market.

Pours a crystal clear super light yellow with a 1/2 inch white head that fades to nothing. Very little random bits of lacing stick to the glass on the drink down. Smell is very skunky with a stale grain and metallic aroma. Not pleasant at all. Taste is of skunky beer-flavored water. There are also tastes of metal and acid. Basically, this is disgusting. This beer is extremely carbonated with an almost caustic bubbly feel going down the throat. Overall, this is a horrible beer with no redeeming qualities other than maybe the color of the beer. I am disappointed that this was included in the variety pack.
