A: The beer is clear light yellow in color and has a moderate amount of carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high white head that quickly died down, leaving a thin patch of bubbles on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of adjunct malts are present in the nose—corn seems to stand out in particular—along with some hints of grassy hops.
T: Much like the smell, the taste has flavors of corn adjuncts along with a light amount of bitterness.
M: It feels light-bodied and a little clean on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer seems a little maltier compared to the other Mexican Adjunct Lagers that I had. It could pair well with some food prepared in corn tortillas if you are looking to stay purely Mexican.

Corn silk yellow with lemonade edges and a tidy cap of bone colored foam that is pretty much featureless. It melts without fanfare and does not do a very good job decorating the drinking vessel. Not a bad look, not a good look.

Thanks, in part, to the clear glass bottle, skunk was appreciated as soon as beer began splashing into glass. Some of it has faded, allowed the presence of pale grains and a pungent muskiness to be appreciated. And the score slide begins... or not.

Mexicali is more flavorful than expected. That could be either a good thing and a bad thing, depending on your point of view. It tastes like the ABV is closer to 7.4% than 4.4%, which is odd. Needless to say, drinking it cold is probably your best bet.

Flavors include very lightly sweet grain (corn perhaps), a modest bitter hoppiness of the Saaz ilk, and a teensy splash of grain alcohol. This stuff might actually be okay if super fresh and consumed on a scorching hot day. At least it errs of the side of aggression rather than pusillanimity.

The mouthfeel is decent. Like the flavor, it's bigger than it should be for the ABV. It also has a fair amount of sparkly bubbles that do their best to add some amount of mouth excitement.

Cervecera Mexicana's Mexicali is definitely in the upper half of all South Of The Border pale lagers in terms of quality. Probably in the upper third. That doesn't make it great beer, but it's a damn sight more drinkable than expected. Brown glass bottles please.

12 ounce can..with best before dating 050515...who would have thunk it..

Pours near clear and super light, dull golden amber. decent looking loose off white head, leaves nice looking fine froth and low sheeting.

Light corn on the nose

Just a hint of flavor, medium bodied and easy drinking...Might work in a pinch...on a very hot day with some spicy food...not terrible

Ultra clear yellow colored beer with a momentary white head.

Despite the clear bottle, no skunk here. This is sweet and malty with a bit of cooked vegetable scent to it. A little lemon hop scent and a bigger corn scent.

Taste starts out neutral with a little bit of seltzer water flavor. Corn and a lemon hop flavor not very bitter or highly hopped.

Mouthfeel is OK.

What can you say about this one, pretty much just beer. Better than Corona I suppose.

Poured from a clear 11.2 oz. bottle. Has a light golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of grains, a bit skunky. Taste is also skunky, malts, some corn, a bit bland. Feels light in the mouth and overall not a very good beer, but as far as AAL's go, it's not all that bad.

Typical yellow garbage appearance, head was average, retention was above average. Sweet can o corn skunky (not in the good way) aroma.

Taste was downright revolting. Water makes for a better beer, and while this has plenty of it, I'm not really sure this stuff is potable water. Montazuma's revenge stuff. A bitterness that doesn't seem derived from hops, but not just because there is no hop mouthfeel. This bitterness is just rank. There's metallic, and then there's rusty metallic, and that's what this is.

Probably worse than Corona. Needs lots of lime and to be super cold to even make me think of getting close to this again.

One of the better adjunct lagers I've had. Medium minus corn flavor, a crackery malt on the finish with a bit of cereal. A more malt flavor than some adjuncts.

The beer gushes forth from the clear bottle a crystalline gold, the head small and frothy, fades fast, leaving a patchy bit of lace. Nose is sweet malt, nothing else; start is sweet malt, some bitter bite at the back, skinny top. Finish has a fair acidity, light hop presence, still sweet at the dry aftertaste, not much else to say, well I can say its better than Corona.

A very clear pale golden color with a decent white head that holds to a thin cover with reasonable traces of lacing in the pint glass. The aroma is just a light rice cereal idea and some sort of adjunct malt presence. Not a lot of action to the look, not too exciting so far. The first taste brings an acceptable cereal grain brightness, fairly typical of these macro-lager/pilsener brews. There's a slight malt sweetness blended in with maybe an illusion of some citrus. It's fairly light in body but carries a reasonably frisky, tiny-bubble carbonation that keeps the feel pretty tingly and refreshing. This is drinkable enough but that macro cheap grain sweetness just builds up on your palette and this isn't going to attract revisits.

Golden color with a nice thick head with decent retention.
Light aroma with notes of grains. Although similar to an average adjunct lager it did not have off-flavors, despite the clear bottle. Maybe because this is fresh and bought locally.
Flavor withwith notes of floral and spicy hops, sweet grains and malt, mild paper and minerals. Dry aftertaste with a medium bitterness.
Light body with good carbonation.
This is an improvement on Mexican style lagers, or otherwise, the other got it worse, given this is a historic beer. It sure has perceivable hops and more malt.

1040th Review on BA
Bottle to Pint
12 oz

Best by 10/13/12

This was a white elephant from my boss at Xmas. Part of a Cost Plus World Market Beers of the World

App- Much more golden in the glass with a semi white one finger medium paced (Adam Sandler anyone) head that left a couple sticky lines of cling. Not bad.

Smell- Really bland and watery. A bit of a lager note with some malt and a little bit of buttery corn.

Taste- At least a bit more flavor than nose let on. Still a macro, still a little bitter with some butter and some malts but overall, nothing to shake a stick at.

Mouth- A more thick body than I was ready for with some lingering bitter malt notes. A bit thick carbonation as well.

Drink- The smell and the taste really bring this one down. Not a lawnmower beer, just a beer to keep spicy tacos down while eating from a taco stand really. Ill pass next time.

Appearance: Huge dense white head fine in composition, at least two inches thick, with great retention. Belgain-type lace adorn the glass walls. The body is quite clear and deep golden, with dense clouds of fine slow-rising carbonation.

Aroma: Pale malt, with a strong mineral note, clean and pleasant and a bit of skunk, no doubt due to the clear bottle.

Taste: Opens with tart pale malt, and a bit of sweetness. As the taste progresses, a mild herbal hop bitterness appears, just enough to balance the mild sweet notes. Finishes with a mild note of bitterness.

Mouth feel: Smooth and fairly full, soft to the touch.

Drinkability/notes: Very good, certainly a standout among Mexican lagers and a very easy to drink summer beer. Would be excellent with Mexican cuisine or pizza. Recommended.

Presentation: Packaged in a twelve-ounce clear glass longneck with a twist-off crown, served in a Pilsener glass.

Out of a bottle found in NYC this beer was a perfectly clear straw gold color. The head was a glowing, toothpaste-commercial white that retained itself as a skim and left spots of lacing. The aroma was light, dry macro grain. The flavors were solid for a Mexican Lager, but no more complex. Think a better version of Corona. Dry, sessionable, boring. The mouthfeel was prickly though, due to high carbonation of the light/medium body. OK, but it still needed to be near-frozen and served with a lime to make it good.

330ml bottle from Lupe Pinto (Glasgow, approx £1.50):
Very clear looking and light straw in colour with a thin lacing of bubbles on top.

Sweet smelling with a sigary water aroma and some bland malts. There is a light hint of butter and some faint, grassy hops. This one is a very basic smelling lager with a mixture of various adjuncts and a light, skunky aroma.

Basic lager taste with some cheap malts and a grassy hop sweetness followed by some grain and faint sugar. There was a few lager adjuncts and it was rounded off with a light bitterness.

Thin & light body with a citrus tang and a slightly grainy feel. There was a dry and mild bitter finish that hinted at sweetness.

A basic and fairly cheap taste that was bland and too thin. A very basic, macro pale lager with not a lot going for it and one to avoid should you come across it.

12 oz. bottle, best before 9-26-08. Very light golden color. Thin white head disappeared very quickly. Not very impressive.

Pale malt, a hint of sulphur and skunky aroma. No shocker, coming from a clear bottle.

Very pale malt character, with some sweetness. A bit of a corn-like flavor. Not much bitterness at all. A slight skunky feel to the whole thing.

Very light body, not much going on here at all.

Poured into a standard pint glass. The beer is a clear pale yellowish straw colour. A thick, airy white head sits there for a bit, then dissipates to eventually nothing. Surprisingly, there is some lacing. The smell is bad. An overpowering skunk smell hits the nose, even worse than some other Mexican lagers. The taste has a sweetness at the front end but otherwise is dominated by adjunct flavours like corn husk and grain. The mouthfeel is light bodied.

Overall, this is not a good Mexican lager. I cannot understand why this beers are brewed in clear bottles. The skunk smell is overwhelming in this case.

A horrible smelling brew whose flavor unfortunately matches the aroma. The look is a crystal clear light golden watery color. This was the best part of my experience. I wil not drink this again.

Best before date is 092608, so it about three months past the good date.
Pours clear gold with a two finger white head and surprise, plentiful lacings. Slightest aroma of skunk which fades quickly. Taste is light maltiness and a touch of euro hops. A very light pale lager but that does make it a very easy drinker. Palate has a slight soapiness which doesn't hurt the flavor. Super session beer due to the low abv. Fine for a day at the beach. Would like to try a fresh one sometime.

Better than Corona, but that isn't saying much. Very bland on the malt profile. Its a clear yellow color with foamy head that melts fast and leaves zero lace. Another skunk beer. Its got some lemony edge, and sour citrus notes, but a musty skunk overtakes it all. It has some light biscuit, toast, corn, and an overall watery presence. Its bland and boring with skunk sprayed all over it. Drain pour indeed.

Sampling right now on 1/29/15. Comes in a 330ml (11.2 ounce) bottle. Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured in to a vintage "Falstaff' thumb-print goblet.

Brew pours a hazy straw-yellow in color with no cap and no lacing to speak of. The aroma is of grains and sweet corn. The taste is well...gross! :P Taste like dirty water and this sweet stinky flavor with a bad aftertaste which I have no idea of what it is. Horrible! Lighter-bodied with above average carbonation. It's a drain poor after about 5 sips. You seen it here.. have to go with a "1" and that is for the bottle. Worst rating of my 523 beer reviews on here. Never again!

This pours a clear, pale yellow color with a foamy white head. It has a pretty strong grain scent to it. The texture is thin and the taste is very grainy. Surprisingly decent for being a light colored Mexican beer in a clear bottle. Not much too it, but this is still a much safer bet than drinking the water in Mexico and better tasting than Corona.

Format: a standard brown 330mL bottle with an okay macro label.

Appearance: a light yellow in colour with a moderate amount of carbonation visible. A small white head lingers at a cap.

Aroma: not much on the nose other than a small amount of corn adjuncts.

Taste: not much beyond corn adjuncts here, with perhaps a touch of cheap grain. Yay.

Aftertaste: the flavours drop away pretty quickly with only those corn adjuncts turning into a bit of a mouth-filling fug.

Mouth feel: light in body with a medium to higher carbonation. Reasonable.

Overall: yet another 'okay but overall a bit ordinary' macro lager. Still not up there with others of the same price bracket.

Interesting appearance for a mexican macro. Looked almost red in the bottle, cola brown and clear in the glass. Head and lacing are presentable as well. Ordor is interesting as well. Hint of roasted malt, along with the usual assortment of grainy, musty malt and adjuncts found in macros. Taste is well...surprising good, albeit slips a bit as the beer warms. Some decent, almost rich roasted maltiness, with a nice balance of hop lingering in the background. Certainly some mineral water used in the brewing process. Much fuller bodied than any mexican brew I've had yet.

Looking at the picture on the site, my bottle had a label on the neck stating 'special imported dark beer' so maybe it's more like a vienna lager than a magro. Would put the one I sampled on par if not better than Negra Modelo

Out of a 12oz silkscreend clear glass bottle. The pour looks like water as it fills the glass , a faint straw colored liquid with an inch of pure white head. No carbonation bubbles whatsoever, the head diminishes leaving a mear trace of lacing.

First wiff is a bit skunk like, another sniff or two reveals a not very pleasant urine odor. I don't mean to be rude or bash this brew...I just call em as I see em, so to speak. I'm truly hesitant to even taste it, just doesn't smell right.

OK, after two spicy pieces of pepperoni pizza, here goes nuthin...umm...yuk! As a light flavor of a Dunkel appears, it's followed by a nice aftertaste of piss. I'm quite serious. In my 48yrs. on this planet, I can't remember ever NOT being able to finish ANY beer. After two tastes of this stuff, it's going down the drain. I've had Mexicali before(years ago) and I don't remember it like this. Truly sorry...end of review

I'm reaching for a Bigfoot to get this horrible taste out of my mouth!!!
