12 oz bottle poured into snifter.
Had a 2009 bottle awhile back and was blown away by it. Saw a few bottles of the 2008 lying around my local bottle shop and decided to pick one up.
A: Pours dark ruby red with a thin, one-finger at most off-white head.
S: Big aromatics in this one, this could be one of the best smelling beers I've ever had the pleasure of inhaling. Almost smells like fresh baked raisin cinnamon bread. Highly sweet, slightly toasted malts and dark fruits also.
T: The taste comes in a bit weaker than the smell, but still has all of the same elements plus a great warming sensation brought on by the high alcohol content. Pretty complex. Raisiny and sweet malts dominate, no signs of hops. Dark fruits as well as toffee, caramel and a bit of roastedness in the finish.
M/D: Thick and chewy body with low carbonation and high ABV. Not highly drinkable obviously, but drinkable for what it is. Very filling.
Overall, in my mind this beer would be perfect for sipping on in front of a fire on a cold winter night. Very good, but most definitely not an every day beer, more like a once-a-year treat.
