2012 vintage poured from a bottle into a Lost Abbey Teku. The beer is fairly dark and reddish-brown in color and is nicely carbonated, producing a nice 2 fingers of head that quickly dissipates due to the high alcohol content. The nose is wonderfully malty. Huge bready notes of toffee, molasses, and vanilla hit you like a big sweet sticky fist.
The beer has a really sweet flavor with loads of malt complexity. There are huge treacle and toffee flavors up front that seem strengthened by the carbonation, which opens the palate and intensifies the flavors. At mid-palate some grapey fruit notes arrive and bring a different kind of sweetness, and a hint of tartness, to the profile. The finish warms up with just a hint of alcohol burn and gives a wine-like character to the lingering fruit notes. Lots of complexity, but highly drinkable given its power. One to sip slowly and contemplate.
Overall, an incredible domestic example of the style that is true to its description and forgoes a hop-infused Americanization for an authentic deep, rich malt celebration. For such an easy-to-find, widely-available beer, this stuff is a treasure. I'm sure more time in the cellar will only make it better. Highly recommended.
