Vintage 2012 cellared for at least a year on location at Little's Wine and Liquor. Had this beer before, but didn't get a chance to rate it.

Poured into a snifter and paired with cheese and crackers.

A&S: Very powerful aroma with components including: sweet raisins, caramel, pretty big alcohol tones (even with the year of aging), red grapeyness (port wine-like). Deep opaque ruby red colored beer. Off white fizzy head that fades almost instantly and leaves no sign of lacing on the glassware.

T&M: The taste is super mellow with the aging. Mostly consisting of red wine grapes and Tannins are pretty present in this beer. Fairly bitter finish towards the end of the taste. Warms the belly a bit as it goes down. Very clean and dry in the finish. Medium to low bodied with high amounts of carbonation.

Overall: Having this beer a day apart from the winter old ale from Alaskan is like night and day. I was thinking my rating on the Alaskan was maybe too harsh, but I'm not second guessing anymore, this is what an old ale should be. One of my favorite and in my top 5 for the style for sure.

2013 vintage. Drank after Weihenstephaner Original Premium and Rodenbach Grand Cru.

A - Fingers appear discernible yet warped on the other side of the glass which is a good indicator of a high gravity beverage. Colours fluctuate between brandy brown and sherry red. Head vanishes swiftly, something I like in this style.

S - Sweet malt. Dark dried fruits; in particular date and prune. Christmas pudding is also evident. Toffee and a faint whiff of banana. So that would be banoffee then.

T - Lovely and sweet. I swear to God I'm tasting actual treacle. Mellow malt profile riffs with caramelized rum booziness. Hop character is minimal which is fine by me.

M - Smooth, thick, mildly carbonated and decidedly viscous.

O - The abv. is expertly masked. This beer already has a rich flavour profile, so I'll be interested to see how it drinks with a few more years on it; hopefully it takes on new layers of complexity. A great beer to round out a great session. Just needs a little more depth and complexity which should come with age.

2013 vintage 12oz bottle, poured into snifter.
Deep garnet with a fluffy khaki head that fades slowly leaving some slimy lacing.
Smells good; metallic caramel malt, tobacco, dark fruit, sweet bread.
Taste is awesome...sweet bready malt, caramel and toffee, sweetness, some tannic leafy crispness, puff of booze.
Mouthfeel is glorious, like a belgian quad. Fluffy and huge but somehow light.
Overall, a great old ale. Can't wait to cellar one of these for a bit, and also looking forward to trying the 2011 vintage I've been eyeing.
