Burnt mohagany color. Starts out with a creamy tan head but reduces to nothing with no sign of carbonation present after a couple minutes. Smells very, very banana yeasty flavored. Burning alcohol there as well. A touch of cherry and some tea-like floral accents. Flavor is similar. I just can't really enjoy this beer. Too strong on the banana yeast byproducts and a touch metallic even. Malty body is sweet with corn like flavors. Some lighter fruits and earthy flavors towards the back. Finishes burning with alcohol esters. A few bright points but overall, a poor example of a Dubbel.

Appearance – The body here was light orange in color and sported a moderate head.

Smell – The sharp orange syrup smothered the mild Belgian yeast, and the little malt I caught in the nose was in a well-beaten third place.

Taste – The Belgian medicine cabinet came out sharply at the taste. The light yeast was the only upside.

Mouthfeel – This was medium-bodied with some mild boozy stinginess.

Drinkability – This has some nice yeasty notes to it but the rotten orange peel kept it from being a “buy again” drinker.

Served on tap at Tyler's Taproom in Apex, NC in a wide mouth tapered glass.

Darker ruddy brown typical of a dubbel with a thin layer of light brown head, less than a finger's width. Despite the thin head, retention was good and lacing was light. The brew was relatively clear with just the slightest haze.

Smells of Belgian candied sugar and caramel mixed with moderately toasted malts. There was some fruit on the nose as well as a hint of citrus (hops?). Very inviting overall.

The flavors are pretty solid as they roll over the tongue with an interesting complexity of caramel sweetness and toasty dry malts. The fruit sort of changed on me as I enjoyed it, shifting to something reminiscent of wheat to a sweet fig type flavor. The balance is good between the grain flavors and the fruit flavors, with just enough bitterness to tie everything together. The finish is relatively dry and quick with just a bit of dry malt in the linger.

The texture was nice - fine carbonation, relatively light, but enough to give a light creaminess to the whole thing. Smooth and relatively easy to drink, but there is the slightest edge at the swallow that goes to a bit of warmth in the finish. You don't really taste the alcohol but you know it's there. Very enjoyable and recommended to those interested in something pretty close to the Belgian style.

Poured into a goblet, this beer was a hazy amber color with a thin off-white head. It had a yeasty, fruity aroma. The taste was some dark fruit, some caramel, and a tiny bit of pepper. Medium-bodied, and very nice to drink. I will have more of these.

12 ounce bottle purchased at Whole Foods, its got no freshness indication, and its all organic. Pours dark honey amber, with a moderate tan head, that leaves next to no lacing. nose is of butterscotch cookies and raisins. Notes of vanilla, rum, alcohol and caramel. This is pretty dark to be called a tripel. I found it to be warming and quite flavorful. A little thin in the middle, but comes thru with a smooth, mouth coating finish. More respectable Belgian style brew, produced in the good old USA. Nice everyday Belgian.

Beer pours a nice brown color with a medium head which quickly dissipates. The aroma is a combination of Belgian sugar, malt and alcohol. About what you would expect from a dubbel, only with a little alcohol. The taste follows the aroma, only with alcohol playing a bigger role. This is a decent Belgian dubbel, but doesn't stack up to the efforts from breweries who specialize in Belgian beers. I'm glad I tried it, but probably won't try it again.

12oz bottle poured into a goblet.

Pours a dark cloudy brown with a thin white head. Nose is fairly boozy for only 8% but it's quite sweet, malty with notes of raisins, banana and bread.

Taste is a bit cloying, not too boozy, has hints of ginger and banana bread. It's got a nice mouthfeel but its sweetness is a bit too much for me.

Poured from a 12oz bottle. Firm pour yielded minimal head that fades quickly to a thin skin of champaigne-esque bubbles. Color is a very dark red-brown. Smell is dark malts and earthiness. Taste is all malt and a metallic tinge, slight sweetness from the malts. Very smooth booze is apparent. Mouthfeel is sort of thin. Moderate drinkability. Finishes slightly hot and swwet

For a domestic attempt at a Bekgian ale this is a good attempt.

The pour yields a great tight head that leaves a nice lace. The aroma is malty and alcoholic and persistes throughout the drink.

The body is very good, not as thick as honey but nice anf viscuous. The finish is definitely maltyand aclcoholic. I'm not a big fan of high gravity being the star of the show but it works in thia brew.

The price was also very reasonable for this quality of brew.

North Coast just never disappoints me.

Pours a typical dark reddish mahogany with a cream colored head that melts to a faint ring. Not much lacing in this one.

Aromas are rich in toasted amber malts, Belgian sugars, brown sugar and some candied dark fruits.

Taste is full of candied dark fruits like raisins and prune and lighter plums...toasted malt and dark brown sugar....some bread or biscuit yeast flavors and a very typical Belgian dryness.

Aftertaste is sweet and dry with a nice alcohol warmth.

North Coast nails this Belgian style...it's not a west coast or even an American take on the dubbel...they've nailed it. In fact I give them a 4.5 on drinkability because the alcohol hotness is very subdued.

North Coast- Cre D'or

Appearance- Hazy/ murky reddish brown with very little head.
Smell- Big alcohol nose. Smells a little like jagermeister?!
I detect cocoa, raisins, and plums.
Taste- Big fruity flavor up front. Raisins, prunes, & cherries. A mild dose of cocoa and black licorice cut through the middle.
Mouthfeel- Sweet in the beginning but turning silky smooth and mild throughout.

Overall- Boy this was a nice surprise! Quite good. I could sit at a bar and drink pint after pint of this. A nice beer.

This puppy pours out looing like a very vibrant, red-ish hued amber color with a very substantial dark-tan colored head, dissipates pretty fast, but there is some lacy remaing foam.

The nose is very hrbalized, fresh garden herbs, dank, wet soil, all-spice, herbal effects and a sweet but almost roastie malt.

The flavor has a nice, crisp herbal bite, the hops and earthy yeast really play on eachother very well, the heat rides in mellow and adds complexity. The malt is very understed for a dubble, I usually like the balance to be more in the favor of the malt with a big yeastie bite after that, but this one is just the opposite. Still, very easy to drink even though it's not totally on style.

Easily one of the most complex and fun Organic brews I've had.

Pours out an impressive murky, muddy amber color, looks raw and unfiltered and gorgeous. The head, while thin, is made of incredibly small bubbles, with copious carbonation feeding it, though it remains thin throughout the session. Modest patches of lace snake their way along the glass.

Smell is a fudgy, spicy, bready, yeasty tangle. Pretty much the stuff good dubbels are made of.

Flavor echoes the aroma perfectly, but there's more: pumpernickel, chocolate, chunky apple cider, raisins, fresh-baked moist cinnamon roll, and our good friend Yeast. Desserty...and seriously f**king yummy.

The mouthfeel is enigmatic. Has a nice gooey-ness to it, yet it's also highly carbonated (maybe a little too much so). The finish is so drying that it all but disappears immediately from the mouth, yet you're left with a fruity/chocolate-fudge aftertaste. Hmmm.

A bit on the heavy, sweet and alcoholic end to consider as anything but "good", drinkability-wise. But a delicious indulgence that's not too out of control or unwieldy. Really hit the spot.

First off, this ain't no Tripel. Nor does it claim to be. More akin to a Dubbel plus one.
Pours a deep mahogany with a tight tan rimming.
Nose goes through carob, pineapple, black tea, Cigar ash, root vegetables, brown sugar, and spiced rum.
It begins with stauch caramel maltiness that immediately gathers towards figs, dates, and tropical fruits. It is short lived, as a smokey dryness wells up, bringing carob and cocoa impressions with a minor rhubarb tartness. Fruitness resides with burnt plantain notes. Yeast qualities are earthen and dark. With its ensuing purple grapes, it develops a mossy, bemushroomed, tannic dryness that brings Viking (WI) firmly to mind. It's a fucked up, damp, murky, forceful yeast, but I seem to tolerate it fine, and thus it presents much like Vike's Abby Normal, which I enjoy a lot, as I do this. The reference won't mean much to many, but those that know will understand. It dries further on the close with burnt black tea and minor dark rum flares.
Lighter than median in build, the carbonation is steady, fine-grained and light. For its strength, this is a dowright quaffer.
It's raspy and funky, but I liked it plenty. Again, if you're looking for a Tripel, you're about a digit off, and you'll be pissed. Label this a Dubbel (or a Belgian {Strong} Dark) and dudes will be tripping over themselves to snatch this up. And rightfully so, as this is generally solid and a decent bargain.

Available at various Whole Foods supermarkets. Pours mahogoney brown with lots of white lace, moderate head in pour. Aroma of mollasses and pice, quite boozy. Taste is spicey peppery, and quite drying aftertaste. Cloves, ginger, chocolate malt, about average mouthfeel. A little too spicey to keep drinking. High carbonation.

Aroma: Clean, Slight Horse Blanket. Clean Sweetness, Hint of Chocolate and Spiciness. Floral Overall.

Appearance: Deep Ruby Red or Burgundy Color. Clear With a Slightly Off White Head.

Flavor: Very Sweet Fruitiness Throughout the Swallow all the Way Through the Delicate Bitterness. Slight Alcohol Warmth, Hints of Chocolate Malt, Sweet Caramel, Toffee, Plum, Raisin, Wood, Banana, Clove and Pear. Sweetness Definitely Wins at the End.

Mouthfeel: Full and Round with a Lively Soft-Beaded Carbonation.

Overall Impression: Very Tasty if you like a Big Sweet Beer. A little Too Sweet for Me and Should Be Just a Tad Bit Dryer For the Style. This Beer is Brewed For Whole Foods.

Wow, beautiful label... and it's organic! But can the beer inside the bottle hold up to the appearance? Yes!

It pours a hazy deep chestnut brown body beneath a thin head of creamy yellowed-tan foam. Orangeish and golden highlights peek through. The head retention could certainly be better, and the lacing is limited as well :( , but perhaps this specific bottle just needed a little more time to condition and give it some more carbonation.

The aroma is quite nice with a strong note of cocoa and some dark fruit. Some floral hops linger in the background, and a touch of alcohol can be noticed if you look for it. Mildly vinous. Subtly candyish.

In the mouth it's medium bodied and smooth with a delicate caress on the tongue from a very fine bubbled, natural carbonation.

The flavor delivers the same cocoaish, chocolatey, and caramelish notes found in the nose, but they're much fuller. It's sweetish at first, but then the dark and juicy fruits (black cherry, plum, prune, raisin), floral hops, and splash of alcohol enter to thin it and dry it out. Firm bitterness... just enough to balance... really quite nicely rounded. A combination of dark, vinous fruits and subtle, creamy dark chocolates linger in the finish. Hmmm... mmm. Very interesting. There's almost a suggestion of Brettanomyces here. Leathery. Mineralish. It's like chocolate and wine. Very, very nice. Highly recommended. Quite original!

A- Pours a dark reddish brown color with an off-white head that quickly fades away.

S- The aroma is filled with dark fruits (raisins and plums), a hint of spices and Belgian yeast.

T- The taste like the aroma is dark fruits with some yeast and alcohol in the warming finish.

M- The mouthfeel is between light and medium bodied.

D- Overall, not a bad brew but there are a lot of other Belgian styled brews I would choose over buying this one again.

Pours a terrific chestnut brown with a super smooth 1 cm head in my Duvel glass.

The smell is 100% banana bread made with molasses.

This is caramel, smooth sweet biscuit aftertaste. Just a nice bit of hops; no alcohol burn;
just givre it a swirl and its creamy as hell. this is another great beer from north coast.

Clearly states that this is a "belgian style abbey ale" on the 4 pack holder, not a tripel. Anyways, the appearance is a deep amber leaning towards the brown end of the spectrum with almost no head to speak of. The aroma begins with a nice dark candied sugar followed by some spices (corriander and clove most likely), some fruity and funky belgian yeast, some toasted bread and light floral and grassy hops. Flavor begins with sweet candied sugar, followed by toasted bread, spices (corriander and clove), funky and fruity yeast character, and some grassy and floral hops. Mouthfeel is a bit thin for the style but drinkability is above average. Another nice belgian style brew from North Coast, but not mindblowing like the Saison.

Cru D'or (Belgian-style Dubbel is best served at perfect cellar temperatures (45-50F) from a short stemmed tulip or small goblet to truly enjoy all of the wondererful aromatics. This organic American Dubbel was brewed specifically for Whole Foods Markets. It pours up a just a bit short on carbonation, but manages to create an enviting tight tannish-white head with a mirage of bubbles that sits atop a bright burnt orange-brown body. The wonderfully aromatic bouquet shows an herbal spiciness along with some appropriate yeast fruitiness reminiscent of dried figs and sugary dates. The caramel maltiness is ever present and becomes more evident as this one warms to room temperature. The flavor starts-off rather cloying, but the underlying spiciness from the yeast and the American influenced bitterness catches up to bring a nice balance. The finish is a tad short and lightly alcoholic. This medium-full bodied organic Dubbel is stylish, but the overall drinkability suffers slightly due to the lack of harmony. This is certainly a "must try" for any Americano-Belgie beer lovers. Here's to the boys at the North Coast!

the smell was the first thing that stood out. reminded my of brown sugar and a bakery. the taste was a little flat, rather sweet, but after it lingered a bit, my lips got rather sticky. like the way a starch would. not something i'm fond of. it was a bit cloudy. the taste fell quickly but the carbonation seemed to stay a bit longer. i don't know if i would purchase it again but i would be sure to choose it over most beers i see at the parties in my town.

Poured into a Chimay glass. Dark Mahogony with a thinnish tan head. I'm smelling grain, raisin, nuts, yeast. Nice combo. Flavors of Caramel, toffee, malt, fruit, leading up to a dry finish. Carbonation is lively but not harsh. A nice after dinner beer.

Pours a dark, cloudy brown with a small tan head that disappears rather quickly to leave a film on top. OK lacing.

Smells of malt first and foremost; a sweet, sugary malt. Fruit esters like banana are definitely evident, along with a hint of hops and a bit of alcohol. Taste is slightly unexpected; the malt comes through as less sweet and more roasted. The fruit esters are still there, but less so, and tend more towards dark fruits like plums. There is also a strange earthy taste, along with some metallic phenols. Interesting brew.

Mouthfeel is good; thick, and with just the right amount of carbonation. Also gives a nice warming sensation.

Overall, a pretty decent brew; one has to admire that the only ingrediants are malt, hops, and water.
