Pours with a quarter inch head that dissipates to only leave a thin ring around the glass and an island of wafer thin head in the middle from the laser etched Duvel tulip. The beer itself is black, but chocolate or mahogony against the light. A swirl conjures up tan bubbles in little whirlpools along the edges. A delight to look at. Lots of caramel and chocolate on the first sniff. Cherries, plums, and other dark fruit come out with a swirl. Not the most complex aroma from this one, but it's inviting. The taste is smooth, going from one flavor to another easily. Chocolate is the most prevalent flavor with thick caramel and Belgian candied sugar is very evident as well. The fruit aromas are present in the flavor, but very subtle. I mostly dislike the candied sugar, but this one has so much of a chocolate backbone that the sugar doesn't stick around in the back of your throat like most other Belgians I've had. It's like biscotti or maybe a wafer. Good, intense flavor, but it doesn't out stay its welcome. Body is light, which makes this a deceptively high ABV beer. Finish is balanced.
Good beer, but nothing too special. A notch above most other dark Belgians. Great if you're looking for chocolate in your tulip.
