It was the classy looking artwork that initially caught my eye and drew me to examine the bottle further, and then once I discovered it was a North Coast Brewing Company product, that pretty much clinched the sale. I am pretty impressed by their Imperial Stout, so I was curious to see how they had done with another of my favourite styles, the Belgian Strong Dark Ale.
Pretty well, is the verdict. Whilst it's never going to be the category leader (obviously, considering the competition!) it is not a bad interpretation at all and well worth the experiment and easily justified the portion of this week's beer fund invested in it.
To put it in perspective, I probably wouldn't buy this beer again if there were others in the store that were untried, but I wouldn't have a problem buying it again in a less favourable scenario, where choice was limited, as I now know it's a decent beer. And therein lies the difference, because I wouldn't hesitate to buy other beers such as Ommegang, no matter what else, tried or untried was in the store.
Overall, very enjoyable and definitely value for money.
