Ruedrich's Red Seal Ale is the last of the North Coast Brewing Co beers that is easily available in Australia, which is a shame as they've got some intriguing brews aside from the three that are over here. Oh well, choosers, beggars, all that stuff.

Poured from a 355ml bottle into a nonic pint.

A: Presents a hazy burnt orange body with a sticky 2cm cappuccino cream head.

S: Quite American Pale Ale in the aroma; big caramel malt base with notes of papaya and pine hops. There is a hint of spicy hops in there somewhere as well. Expecting a well balanced brew.

T: Malt is predominant, along with a touch of funky yeast and caramel sweetness. The hops aren't as big as in an APA but they're there and giving it the papaya/pine/spicy kick that was anticipated by the aroma. Finishes with a medium bitterness and a slight brewed tea after-taste.

M: Medium bodied with a light carbonation and some oily hops.

D: As expected a very well-rounded and balanced Amber Ale. A great starting point for those who want to get in to APA's or IPA's but can't handle bitter hops yet. I would even go so far as to say that this is the best of the North Coast brews I've tried so far and would easy manage a session of these, were it but for the cost. Bit of a moot point there, good job anyway North Coast!

Food match: Great thing about a balanced beer is that it works with practically anything; dark meats, light meats, salads, cheese platters - I would personally lean towards Thai but that's just my preference.

$ 1.89/12 oz bottle at Wegmens in Jamestown, NY
Undated bottle at 40 degrees into imperial pint
Very faint malty aroma
Head large (6 cm), off white, creamy, rapidly diminishing to an irregular layer which lasts the duration of the beer.
Lacing spotty – rings of irregular islands of various size bubbles
Body coppery, hazy
Flavor of light malt and a hint of lemon
Palate medium, creamy, soft carbonation

This is a good example of an amber/red ale which meets the style characteristics quite well. The malt is not overly sweet or cloying but just right. I’m not a fan of this style, but this is one I could drink all day.
