My glowing and pregnant wife’s favorite beer, she might literally kill me for reviewing it before she pops. All the more so since I think I technically stole it, the two four packs undeservedly collecting dust in the back of the fridge, gifts from her baby shower and thusly for her to enjoy when she is allowed to imbibe. I love you b, but the temptation was too great … and the payoff definitely worth it.
STYLE: Belgian Strong Pale Ale
LOOK: Light, shimmering orange. Not nearly as pale or cloudy as expected. More interestingly, it has the appearance of heft though maybe not actually so. More on that later.
NOSE: Like a haystack filled with peppered apples. Dash of champagne vinegar and worcestershire sauce, now that’s outstanding.
MOUTH: Can I start with a critique that maybe isn’t fair? It’s so so drinkable, I hesitate to say it’s even quaffable. The latter seems to imply a sipping, or at the most moderate, pace. But for a relatively high-alcohol-content pale ale you could annihilate a few of these frat boy style without picking up much of what’s to be had. If you lack patience, that is. Slow your roll with this one. Buttery and white wine but also peppery, maybe meaty. All somehow packaged in a lighter-than-it-should be mouthfeel and soft, barely there finish.

This was a hazy pale golden color, it came with a nice frothy head. Nice nose consisting of soft fruits like pears and apricots plus light spice and bubblegum.
Sweet tasting overall, more fruity than sugary. Mild clove and some other spice at the finish. This has a nice feel. Good stuff.

12oz bottle poured into an Allagash tulip. Yeast roused and poured.
A: Golden-orange color. Very hazy with some yeasty silt in suspension. Fine-bubbled white head holds on at a half inch in height. A thin sheet of delicate lacing eventually slides down the glass, forming rings in its wake.
S: Very floral. Esters of star fruit and pithy orange. Chalky yeast, slightly musty. Light minerality. Browned biscuits and wheat. Zesty little wheat snap. Faint alcohol and medicinal phenol.
T: Pithy orange and lemon, star fruit. Floral hops. Chalky and musty yeast. Toasted biscuit and some creamy wheat. Coriander? Very faint alcohol. Medicinal phenols are tame. Dry finish of yeast, biscuit, faint phenol and pithy hop bitterness.
M: Medium bodied with a sense of weight. Wheat adds a frothy and creamy feel. Lightly scrubbing carbonation still allows the beer to press down on the tongue.
O: The curveball here is all the wheat character. It's not expected, as when you're drinking a Belgian Golden, you tend to look to Duvel for comparison. It really works though. While Duvel is all about clean pilsner malt character and great balance, Pranqster achieves a similar balance, albeit with a wheaty approach and perhaps a bit more complexity because of it. Yeast, malt (and wheat adjunct), and hops all work very harmoniously together, and this ends up being far too easy to finish.

Appearance: Orangish-yellow, cloudy. Head disappeared quickly, no lacing.
Smell: Malt, yeast, spices and honey.
Taste: Floral, good yeast and fruitiness; melons and pears?
Mouthfeel: Low carbonation. kind of dry.
Overall: Very tasty. Being my third or fourth Belgian, I'm starting to find that I really enjoy this style the more I drink it. Hides the 7.6% abv very well.
