Poured from 12oz. bottle into a pint glass. No dates visible on the bottle.
I poured this a few minutes ago, taken from the fridge, waiting for it to warm up a little bit so it gets close to the suggested 50-60 degrees.
A: Solid black. Black as midnight, completely opaque. Semi aggressive pour yielded a solid 3 finger medium brownish-tan head that rose straight to the top of the pint glass. Head had very tight small creamy bubbles, excellent retention and thick lace.
S: Not a lot going on here, less than I had anticipated for the ABV. Definitely not a boozy aroma, it's very light on the nose, but I catch some dark roasted malts with notes of chocolate and coffee. Has a great aroma, but a little on the non-aromatic side for my tastes.
T-1: After waiting for this to warm up a touch, I took the first sip at probably around 40 degrees. We'll start here and see how the experience changes after a half hour or so of sipping.
First taste of this stout cold was quite a surprise - the flavor is very bold and in-your-face at the start, much more than expected from the mild aroma. Starts very earthy, bready, rolled oats, roasted malts, coffee, notes of chocolate. Mid palate I get a hit of strong roasty malted booze, almost malt liquor-like for a split second, maybe even a vodka or rum style fume taste, but it fades quickly and finishes almost dry (not quite dry, but it dries up a tad) with a medium hop. Very tasty!
T-2: About 15 minutes after removing from fridge, we should be probably around 45 degrees or so, but still pretty well chilled. Still well below the suggested serving temp.
The boldness of the bready roasy malts and coffee has calmed down a bit. At this temperature, it's trying to balance out a bit better. Not getting as strong of a boozy mid palate, but it's still there. The light hop finish is still present as much as it was when it was "super cold", countering the malts for a more even balance this time.
T-3: We're at about 20 minutes after the pour, estimating between 45-50 degrees. Bordering on the recommended serving temp.
Now the balance is really starting to shine through, and I can see the pattern that's going to occur. As this beer warms, it begins to lose a lot of that super strong roasty coffee malty start. The mid palate still has that high ABV boozy hit, but the finish gives me a nice hop to counter the starting maltiness. Very good balance from start to finish with a decent twist mid way through.
T-4: Giving it a nice swirl, we're probbaly between 50-55 degrees now. Let's give this a couple more sips.
Again, very well balanced. Starts roasty, malty, oaty, coffee with chocolate notes, much more tame now at close to room temps. The mid palate booze hit is not nearly as noticeable, and the light hop finish has even tamed a bit, but overall still manages to remain bold and full flavored. This beer becomes a nicely balanced, finely crafted experience that certainly is best enjoyed at the suggested temps.
M: Full bodied, medium carbonation, chewy, sticky, but not syrupy. Creamy, smooth, goes down easy. Very good, lots to like and nothing to complain about here.
O: Solid stout, highly drinkable and enjoyable. A bit on the pricey side, but definitely worth it to treat yourself with this if you're a fan of dark, roasty, malty, full bodied stouts and porters. Thoroughly enjoyed my experience with this beer.
