A dark dark highly carbonated nearly black but more brown liquid dredges from it's bottle. A faint tan head dissapears almost as soon as it appears leaving spotty thin lacing and a rim around the edges.

Smells of bitter cooking choclate, black currant, roasted chocolate malt, roasted coffee, vanilla, and a dense hop aroma.

Tastes of a bitter dark choclate bar. With a big roasted malt component and grainy drying hops to help balance. A finish of coffee, some smoke, burnt flavors, heavy cream, and a few choice dark fruits. Very big and complex with no apparent RS. Very dry. Alcohol leave a slight burn in the chest but otherwise very well hidden

Mouthfeel is very dry and somewhat bitter. A terrific contrast to the RIS i've been sampling lately.

Appearance- Pitch black with a brown sugar head that dissipate quickly to a film. Lacing is all over the place.

Small- What you would expect from a RIS- chocolate, coffee. With addition of alcohol and hops.

Taste- Lots of hop character in this one. I think the coffee and chocolate flavors take a back seat in this RIS, which is a little backwards usually.

Mouthfeel- Good mouthfeel. I tend to like them a little thicker, but that is just me.

Drinkability- At 9% I would stick with one, but it is not so boozy that I wouldn't consider another.

The first time I had this beer I was just getting into craft brews and I drain poured this one. Now that I am a little more versed in beer I can appreciate it a lot better.

12oz bottle picked up from Stowe, VT in 2/09.

Significant accolades to North Coast Brewing for this beer...12 gold medals from various beer festivals since 1996.

Pours virtually black. Nice tan foam forms on the surface. Texture is not as thick as you would expect for a beer of this gravity - somehow they kept the viscosity down, not a bad thing! Smells a lot of chocolate and roasted malts. Some of the apparently 75 IBUs show off here as well. Tastes great - more accessible than some of the bossier RISs...with a chocolate, malty, nutty taste, followed by the alcohol and bitterness from the hops. I have not gotten this level of hops from this type of beer before. The drinkability is surprisingly good...I could see 2 or 3 of these in myself.

I remember having the first of the 6-pack of this over 6 months ago and it was a bit harsh at the time, but I believe it has improved some with age. I believe this bottle, the last, was roughly 1 year old. Highly recommended! Even the burps I get from this are appetizing.

poured very dark from the bottle with a tan head, good lacing. bouqet was impressive with the expected chocolate, espresso, toffee, and dark dried fruit notes. west coast hops also were present but subtle against these dominant aromas. a little sweet upfront but not for long as the astringent roasty flavors and subtle bittering of the hops rush in to make this beer a bit drier than i expected. alcohol warming somewhat noticeable at the end. full-bodied, naturally. i like my dark, heavy beers to present with a little more residual sweetness than this, however. still a very nice beer. not very sessionable due to the body/abv but quite tasty.
