A perfect example of the style... It is what I compare all other RIS's to. Not sure why this isn't rated even higher, but it doesn't require a harpoon and large fishing vessel to land.

The alcohol content doesn't dominate in the flavor, but you can feel it when you breathe. A very syrupy texture. Shockingly minor flavor at first, but the roasted malts come through on the aftertaste. It's a slow burner, but really nice.

Had on tap at Muddy Waters, Bryant Lake Bowl and Pig & Fiddle and have had from a bottle.
L: Pours bright deep dark coffee brown under a 2” persistent, clingy, frothy foam collar.
S: Chocolate, dark sugar, coffee, dark dried fruit, and and a hint of wine on the nose.
T: Chocolate coffee flavors sweetened with molasses and seasoned with dark dried fruit with a slight tartness in the background. Dark roast bitterness augments the hop bitterness on the finish.
F: Full body to chewy, medium carbonation
O: Very fine Russian Imperial Stout. I think I like the draft version a little better than the bottled because the flavors come out more.

They don't make 'em like this anymore. The beer that introduced me to the RIS. Here goes:

A: Wow. Pours pitch-black; absolutely no light gets through. The head is absolutely massive. It's dark, fluffy, and more than two inches thick. It also recedes super slowly, leaving a ton of lacing in its wake.

S: Burnt malt through and through. Lots of bitter, dark chocolate and roasted coffee. Splendid.

T: Thick and creamy roasted coffee. Burnt malt. The bitterest of dark chocolates. Rich in dark soil and tobacco. Overall, a splendid concoction.

F: Thick and creamy, like the taste. Perfect.

O: Like I said, they don't make 'em like this anymore.

Just wanted to say this is the beer that you don't drink everyday, this is a Russian imperial stout, it's a very nice beer and whoever on this forum is saying that when you pour it, a thick one inch foam layer is created and does not go away is just simply someone who knows nothing about pouring beer I ve had it so many times and poured it perfectly without having any foam, this is a great stout beer and if you like stout, this will be a nice choice the alcohol in it is 9% so 3 of them will get you a great buzz, the taste is fine too, you can easily drink it, very smooth for a stout, whoever says otherwise about the taste means they like lager because if you are that person that drinks lager all the time then stout and IPA won't taste good to you
This beer is rated in my opinion at minimum a 4.5 out of 5

Pours black with a thick 3 inch milk shake head. Head stays intact as you drink the beer. Chocolate malt with a medium hop bitterness at the end. Thick and chewy. This is a great Stout.

Not a fan of imperials, so I'm not surprised I don't like this as much as most other people do. Please, don't take my opinion on this one. Try it yourself. You'll probably enjoy it more than I did.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Appearance is black but looks like a very dark brown under light. Lots of carbonation and great lacing. Aroma is malt, both roasted and unroasted, dark chocolate, and dried fruit (figs and raisins). Taste has lots of chocolate, coffee, and roasted malt. The finish has a nice bitterness with some grassy alcohol notes. You can taste the alcohol in the middle and finish but it isn't overpowering. Feel is smooth

12 oz. bottle into a snifter. Pitch black in color with a 2+ finger head of mocha foam. Big bitter choclate and roasted malt on the nose with notes of tobacco and dark fruit. Quite dense and incredibly smooth. Creeping choclatey bitterness initially, gradually engulfing the palate in an unstoppable wave of rich flavor. There's a subtle sweetness in there, in the shadows. Amidst these polarizing characteristics is a deep, dark roastiness that engulfs, even dominates the later portion of this beer. The aftertaste sees a smokey, raw coffee bean-like flavor emerge, which hangs around for quite a while after the beer is gone.

A very well-made, enjoyable, and traditional RIS. Within the style, this one easily stands up to Founders IS and SN Narwhal.

Pours a deep black with a towering tan colored head, lacing on the glass is impressive. Initially I get some aroma hops tinging the nostril, however this is mowed over by strong scents of deep roasted malts, chocolate, and brown sugar. Initially the palate is calmed with a smooth and creamy cocoa/brown sugar flavor, then it is overrun with toasted malts that are strong but not overbearingly ashy like some stouts. The alcohol is hidden well here with the flavors, and the texture is rather smooth on the palate. Overall a really good stout, I would most definitely purchase this one again.

Pours an opaque and nearly black with an impressive and massive tan foam head. The retention is so good you have to wait an eternity to start drinking; the lace sticks to the side of the glass throughout. Strong coffee/espresso aroma, vanilla, wood and alcohol. Robust taste of roasted malts, dark coffee and hops providing the bitterness; also, a hint of vanilla and/or dark fruits providing a sweetness. Full bodied, creamy and a finish that is both bitter and sweet. A wonderful complex and flavorful beer. I would say it's perfect for the winter months, yet, I had it on a warm summer night after dessert and it was just as good.
I'm quite impressed by this one which is why I've rated it highly.

Pours a jet black, coffee color with a thick, dark brown 1-finger head the color of brown sugar.

Nose of vanilla bean, caramel, and coffee bean. Slight tobacco smell as well.

Phenomenal lacing with a moderate amount of carbonation.

Taste of espresso, fades to hazelnut and vanilla, then cacao, and lastly to toffee. Pleasantly bitter, yet sweet. Goes down smooth, very smooth.

One of the best stouts and beers in general I've ever had. Highly recommend this to anyone, especially coffee lovers.

12oz glass bottle poured into teku glass. Good sized head, sand colored. Getting hints of coffee on the nose. Really nice taste, definitely got some tobacco as it warmed to room temperature towards the last sip. I'm glad I bought this on impulse and was turned onto it by various threads on here. Thanks BA! Now I want the barrel aged one...

Stouts are definitely growing on me! More of these types of beer and I'm all in! Impressed with the flavors! Head and lacing was poor but overall the taste and feel was pretty amazing. Definitely try it again.

Great stout that hits all the right notes and, in Massachusets, is readily available in most craft beer aisles. You cannot go wrong with this beer. Pours a jet black with a moderate khaki head that slowly dissipates. Aroma of roasted...roasted everything - coffee, chocolate, barley, toffee. Slightly sweet taste of vanilla balances the bitterness mid-sip but gives way to a clean bitter finish that warms the mouth. A true standout.

I think mine must have been a bad batch. It tasted like straight toothpaste. It had the look, feel and smell of a great RIS. However, when I drank it, it was one of the more revolting beers I've had in the last 6 months. Drain poor. This may get deleted, maybe not. But this is a 100% real review of this beer. I was extremely unimpressed.

Good beer, but so many are better....the bar has been raised. Boulavard, otter creek, pretty things russian imperial stouts are in a class of their own and old Rasputin lacking the richness and maltiness found above.

Poured into a pint glass revealing a 1 finger head with good retention and lacing. The color was a very dark brown, almost black. The smell was heavy with roasted nodes. I also noticed a decent amount of coffee and a little chocolate in the smell. The mouth feel was great with a nice chew and I found this beer to be very filling. Everything you want in a good imperial stout. The taste was no surprise. A lot of roasted malts and some coffee. I would not have guessed it was 9%. I would have loved to have more sweetness come through along with the other tastes. Overall this beer was very good. Everything I expected from this imperial stout.

This was interesting, but not as enjoyable as Blvd's "Dark Truth." Poured a dark black with a decent head and lacing. Smell was largely roasty with some sweet brown sugar notes. Nice mouth feel: very filling, but for me, just not enough sweetness pushing-back against the heavy roasted bitterness: Still much better in that regard though as compared to some of the Sam Smith brews, etc: Note - Very pronounced lingering coffee bitterness on the palate long after the deed was done. Definitely felt the 9.00 afterwards as well.

Man oh man, am I glad I found this at the package store. I will have to beg the manager to keep stocking it.

A: Beautiful. Cascading pour is reminiscent of a Guinness but the bubbles don't waterfall since there isn't nitrogen infused. A two-inch caramel head that refuses to die. Becomes pillowy and leaves minimal lacing. The foam slides down the side of the glass and recollects on top of the beer. Beer is a deep, deep red-brown from what little I can see on the edge of the mug but the body is black. Light does not penetrate.

S: warm and malty sweet like some graham cracker and allspice. Light fruitiness probably from hops since yeast is probably killed by the higher ABV. A little bit of grass and earth. Slight alcohol vapor takes it to the head.

T: VERY rich and complex. Toasted biscuit or sweetbuns with good rounded coffee notes and some dark chocolate depth. Slight bitterness from hops and toasted grain. Malt is sweet and bready without being cloying. Slight alcohol astringency helps cut the malt stickiness and the dark toast flavors linger for a long time.

M: Rich, full-bodied and creamy from foam. Alcohol helps dry the palate a little and cuts the sticky malt and sugar and it leaves a nice bite after enveloping the mouth in rich softness.

Beautiful beer and well worth the $2.50 (plus tax!) per bottle. Very few bad notes here and they are just nitpicks. It could use a point or so less ethanol but it leaves a lovely buzz so it is worth it. Also I would enjoy slightly more chocolate but again that is subjective. Great stuff. If this was on tap I would be in heaven. I will try to make this a staple.

Good health, great beer.

A-Black color with a hint of brown, nice warm light brown thick head that lingers
S-Malt upfront, toasted and roasted malt with an alcohol odor at the back end
T-I get sweetened coffee, and then a chocolate flavor, with a nice bitter balance
M-Carbonation is subtle but on the higher end which I like. It cleanses the palate to enable the bitterness to follow through.
O-I really enjoyed this beer and I recommend it.

A very excellent imperial stout. Dark, dark mahogany with light lacing around the edges. Smell of dark roasted grains, coffee. Taste is a complex sequence of events, from an initial bittersweetness of burnt toast and light anise, which moves sharply to a alcohol twang with campfire smoke, a woody taste that isn't unpleasant, to a lingering bitterness in the back of the mouth that is a complex interplay of roasted malt and hops bittering elements. I wish the mouthfeel was heavier and creamier.

Delicious, one of the best of the always available beers. Beer is a deep jet black color with a light tan/creme head. Beer has a great bitter coffee/dark chocolate taste to it with a good amount of carbonation. The beer is very smooth and refreshing for the style without losing its bitter Russian Imperial character.

Thick velvety smooth mouth feel. Hits of chocolate, coffee and dark malt. Slightly more bitter for a stout than what I was expecting, but an excellent beer.
