poured from the bottle into a pint glass

A - Pours a perfectly dark burnt motor oil black with diminished amber highlights and a creamy, dark tan, 2-finger head. Head stays intact all the way down the glass. Leaves behind a substantial web of lacing on the top half of the glass and some splotches on the bottom.

S - Dark, bitter chocolate with plenty of hops and a touch of plume.

T - A bit of bitter chocolate upfront. The body is a wonderful balance between dark and fruity hop notes (plum and fig) and a generous dose of chocolate malt that diminishes as the beer expands. Everything briefly shuts off as the beer passes over the back of the tongue before a vigorous finish of dark rum, burnt chocolate malt and dark fruit, leather, and cigarettes explodes in the mouth.

M - A fair amount of carbonation gives the beer a creamy mouthfeel that causes the beer to expand and change flavor as it sits in the mouth. On the lighter side of heavier bodied which seems to suite it well.

Old Rasputin has become a benchmark for the Russian Imperial stout style since it its introduction in the late 80's. And that benchmark holds - this is one of the best examples of the style i've had in quite some time. From the near textbook appearance to the intense and deliciously complex flavor, this beer does everything well. It's a keeper that I hope to have around often. Glad to have finally tried it.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass

A - Pours pitch black with two fingers of tan head that never fully settle, beautiful sticky lacing

S - overloaded with bitter chocolate and coffee, not a hint of booze, and a nice malt presence

T - Perfect balance of Coffee and Chocolate, nice dark malt character as well

M - Really light considering it's ABV. nice carb, althought I like my heavy stouts a little flatter.

O - This to me is the benchmark RIS. Every time I have one it's extremely enjoyable and insanely easy drinking.

Pot at Terminus. From notes.

A - Poured black with a khaki one finger heat. Good rings of lace and a film of retention.

S - Coffee seemed strong with lot's of chocolate. Simple but enjoyable.

T - Chocolate, booze, chocolate covered coffee beans. layers of chocolate and roastiness.

M - Really smooth, mild carbonation and a medium to full body.

O/D - Nice but lacking depth. Don't get me wrong though, this was a good Impy Stout and really easy to drink. Just left me wanting more as I felt like it had the potential for greatness.

12 oz. bottle poured into Weyerbacher tulip.

A - Pours a nearly black color with a finger and a half of dense tan head. Great retention and beautiful lacing.

S - Roasty malts, oak, coffee creamer, and trace amounts of pine.

T - Robust malt profile with burnt chocolate, wort, bitter coffee, and candied pecans. Starts sweet and moves towards bitter with a little bit of pine on the aftertaste. Very good stout.

M - Very smooth with great carbonation and a medium feel.

O - This is a staple in my fridge. Roasty is what comes to mind as far as flavor and aroma. The price is a bonus here and I always appreciate it when imperial stouts are offered in 12 oz. bottles. I give North Coast a lot of credit for making a top notch RIS with wide distribution and a reasonable cost. Good stuff.

A..Beautiful dark black pour. Only reason I didn't give it a 5.0 is there was almost no lacing.

S..Plenty of chocolate notes and a pronounced malty presence. Truly inviting.

T..Toffee, coffee and chocolate flavors, all of which are more complex than anticipated. Great smokey taste, just great!

M..Very easy to drink considering the high ABV and style. Great example of the style.

O..Wish I had not waited so long to try this incredible Russian Imperial Stout. Looking forward to having this one again soon!

Appearance:
Pours a coffee black. Huge tan head that reminds me of whip cream and maple syrup and lasts forever. Ever so slight amber coloring in the glass, but no light is escaping from it, it is a black abyss. Lacing is thick and frothy, like the fangs of the ocean, or sea-foam wallowing in a tidal pool. It sticks to the glass nicely and stays for quite some time.

Smell:
Smells of a malty pang. Sweet and tangy in the initial whiff with slight roasted and chocolate malts present.

Taste:
Very smoky on the tongue, far more so than I got from the smell. Sweeter malts can be found in the aftertaste, but for the most part the roasted malts power through with lots of thick smoke. Vanilla notes can be found in the background character.

Mouthfeel:
Light and frothy, but a little harsh with smoky power of the malts. Fairly bubbly, too, on the tongue, with a long and bitter smoke aftertaste. Sits a little thickly in the stomach, as is expected with the style. Nice Russian Imperial Stout.

Overall:
I like this beer. Its smoky like a boy scout’s campfire, carries a lighter ABV for an imperial stout but still plenty of alcohol, and it fits the style well.

Not my favorite but a good example of a russian imperial stout. Bonus words.
