Cheers once again to Goblinmunkey7 for giving me a bottle

Appearance: Black, with a moderately-sized beige/light tan head, leaves wisps of lacing

Smell: A lot of different aromas here - burnt malts, somewhat charred, very roasted - burnt, dark coffee - dark chocolate and some cocoa - hoppy, too - herbal and grassy, with orange and grapefruit rind - the hop profile is not what I'm looking for, but I imagine that it will drop over time

Taste: Follows the smell, with a ton of burnt - burnt malts, chocolate malts, bitter dark chocolate, burnt coffee, char - burnt orange and grapefruit rinds - combined bitterness from the burnt malts and the hops is actually a little harsh - lingering bitterness, too

Mouthfeel: Medium body, above average carbonation, very smooth, somewhat dry

Overall: Good, not that amazing

The RIS style is inundated with ridiculously thick, absurdly ridiculous monsters. This is not one of them, and it isn't supposed to be. It's a good for what it is, but I am not a huge fan of the hops and overall lack of depth of the malts. This does work well in cooking chili, however.

Poured into a tulip. (Closest glass nearby)

Yeah, no light is escaping this one. Kind of an odd thing to give a high appearance on, but I think you know where I'm coming from on a stout like this. :-)

The carbonation was pretty much spot on, nice small bubbles. I think I was surprised by the smell, not as strong as I was expecting. A little charcoal and bitter chocolate aroma.

The taste was very smooth, not overpowering. Somehow, I was hoping for some more complexity to shine through, but the variety of subtle flavors was dominated in my nose by the charcoal taste.

I was surprised how masked that 9% is. Doesn't feel like it at all. I'm not sure I'd ever session an imperial stout, but it's as likely a candidate as you're gonna find.

Regardless, it's good stuff.

A- The nose is a little understated. I get some coffee and roast.

A- Pitch black with a thin rich brown colored head.

F- Dark chocolate and deep roasty flavors are present. There's some bitterness, but it's subdued. Not harsh or overly astringent. The malt flavors are there, but not residual sweetness.

M- Low to average carbonation. Nice full body, without being cloying. Actually a pretty dry taste, like accented by the mild astrigent character of the roast malts.

O- An awesome beer. It's everything you could want in a Russian Imperial Stout. I love the fact that it's big and strong, but there's not a hot alcohol flavor and that the roast flavors are present, but the beer avoids being too harsh. It's a drinkable version that I'd come back to.

Poured into standard pint glass

A: Pours a deep black; tan foamy head; chocolate brown coloring around the edges when held to light
S: Smoky smell, maybe some hints of some spice, cinnamon
T: Smoky chocolate taste upfront; some hoppy bitterness towards the end; hints of coffee, licorice, and spices throughout with a nice roasted background
M: Full-bodied character, lingers in the mouth awhile
O: First time having this stout and it was very tasty...definitely a sipper that is best enjoyed while hanging out and relaxing...overall a very complex stout with a number of different flavors hitting you throughout
