I can see why this is so popular. Roasted malts balanced by a pleasant bitterness, with tones of complexity to boot. It also warms nicely, which allows the chocolate and coffee flavors to bloom. The bottle I had wasn't especially creamy, to my disappointment. I think I'll revisit Old Rasputin with the hope the I'll get a better bottle, but this is how I feel about it for now.

12oz bottle into a snifter

A: Pours pitch black with almost four fingers of very active light brown head. Recedes to a film atop the beer.

S: Very strong roasted malts with a mixture of dark and milk chocolate, though light. Some piney hops in the background.

T: Starts out with a bitter hoppiness that is quickly followed by roasted malts, espresso, and dark and milk chocolate. The bitterness is a bit strong for me, but fortunately it's accompanied by great stout characteristics. As it warms, it gets better - the roast and chocolate become more apparent, and the bitterness less so.

M: Fairly thick with creamy carbonation.

O: A solid Russian Imperial Stout. Very roasty with great milk and dark chocolate flavor, but a bit too bitter for my liking. If it was a bit sweeter, it'd be phenomenal.

A second Old Rasputin review. Had the pleasure of trying this on tap after a year of cellaring. DBGB, Bowery and Houston, NYC. This review is pretty much a copy of my first with some major changes:

A: Pours a beautiful matte black. No light gets through. After a cascade, a frothy 2-finger mocha head remains, with good retention. This gives way to a beautiful lacing.

S: Chocolate up front, roasted malts. Hop presence has certainly faded compared to the fresh bottle, and has been replaced by a coffee-like aroma. Much stronger than out of the bottle.

T: WOW. So much character, but still with all the flavors of a stout. Roasted malts and chocolate throughout, with coffee flavors much more powerful after the cellaring. The second 5.0 I have ever awarded for taste - this is simply perfect.

M: Creamy with just the right amount of carbonation. Finishes with some foam. Other stouts with this much flavor are generally sippers...this one is so smooth you can drink at your own leisure.

O: One of the best stouts I've tried. I only wish it were easier to find - it's lack of ubiquity is astonishing given its status in the beer world as the archetypal RIS.

Poured into a pint glass...

A: Very dark black, finger of brown khaki head, some cascading effect.

S: Dark roasted malts, cocoa, coffee/espresso, light hop presence, some dark fruits as well.

T: Lots of dark roasted malts and bittersweet chocolate, espresso coffee grounds, nice roasty bitter finish.

M: Thick and chewey, smooth creamy feel, hard to have more than one in a session though.

O: Outstanding RIS, so much complexity and flavors goin on and the 9 abv goes almost unoticed.

Taste= wonderful, chocolately notes, minor coffee notes, at 9% abv there is little alcohol taste. almost a milkshake like taste, very good

Appearance= black, superior lacing, and a retentive head

Smell= very nice, chocolatey and appetizing

Mouthfeel= thick as you would expect for a 9% stout

Overall= Fantastic stout that tastes great and delivers a powerful buzz, 10-14 dollars a 4 pack, will definitely buy again.
