Had on nitro at mellow mushroom in Johnson City, TN

Arrived looking like a typical nitro pour with an off-white creamy head. Body was solid black.

Aroma had pleasant notes of coffee and dark chocolate. Also a slight hint of smoke in there.

The flavor had loads of cocoa and a slight bit of coffee. Lots of roasted malt and unfortunately, a decent amount of alcohol. I kind of feel like the nitro may have hindered the flavor somewhat because I didn't find this all that spectacular. I will have to pick up a bottle sometime to see if my opinion is any different.

Aggressively poured this one into my pint glass for 2 fingers of frothy, light mocha colored head. The body is a deep regal brown. Light lacing clings tightly to the glass in random places.

Rich, dark roasted malt starts the beginning of this aromatic journey. A little raisin sweetness helps the transition into a coffee/chocolate mix, and alcohol tops it all off.

Dark roasted malt and that raisin hint start her off. Chocolate peeks its head in, then transitions to a smooth and delicious coffee flavor. Topped off with the perfect amount of alcohol and dark chocolate at the end.

Smooth beer. Medium to heavy bodied, the carbonation isn't noticeable other than as an assistant in the task of helping move this along. Not that I want it to go to fast. Coats the tongue very well.

Let me start by saying this is one of my favorite RIS.

A. This beer looks just like it should dark brown with red tints when held to a light. the head is perfect .
S. just like a RIS should smell rich
T. it is perfectly balanced with just enough taste but not overly complexed.
M . this is the only place this beer will let you down. t is a bit thin in the mouth,
O. this beer is hands down one of the best RIS you will ever taste. the best part is you can get it just about anywhere in the US and all year round. The price is right as well, under priced for the quality of this beer.

Very dark brown color with a little light coming through with red tones. Head is reddish brown with amazing retention and lacing.

Aroma is powerful and mainly of roasted dark malts, olives, chocolate, coffee, and mollasses.

Taste is dark malts, mollasses, some dark fruit, licorice and lots of dark chocolate towards the end of the sip. Finishes bitter with a palatable alcohol bite.

Body is full and rich with medium carbonation. Mouthfeel silky and smooth. Good drinkability for a RIS. Alcohol warmth follows each sip.

Overall this is a world class beer, very balanced between roastiness and chocolate as well as sweetness/bitterness.

Poured from a bottle into a GI tulip on 7/17/12.

Pour: Darkest Brown while not quite black. Two and a half fingers khaki head that sticks around well but leaves no lacing.

Smell: Roasty malts, booze, chocolate.

Taste: Dark fruits with roasted espresso bitterness and some chocolate. Light booze.

Mouthfeel: Very creamy and rich, slight warmth.

Overall: A textbook RIS, and very enjoyable. Even better that its AVAILABLE. Don't pass this up in favor of a mediocre seasonal simply because its always on shelves.

Pours the purest black with a small tan head.

The smell is dark roasted malts and chocolate as well as a.little alcohol. Would be better if it was a little stronger.

The taste is roasted malts, coffee, milk chocolate and a bit of alcohol.

The mouth feel is smooth and full bodied with slight carbonation and a little tingle from the alcohol.

Overall a nice beer not overly complex but has a great taste. Hides it's abv well doesn't taste like 9%.
