Poured from 12 oz. bottle to snifter glass.

A: Jet black. With a 1 in. light brown head that fades down to a modest ring.
S: Whiskey, molasses, dalt malts, chocolate, and a hint of coffee.
T: Very dark breads: rye, pumpernickel.. Strong coffee taste, with hints of dark chocolate.
M: Medium to full mouthfeel.
O: This is my first Russian Imperial, and I think it is very good. Look forward to trying many more.

Look: Deep black with generous frothy dark tan head that settles to a film with groups of bubbles in the middle and lacing at the edge. Sediment noted in the bottle.

Smell: Dry roastiness, perhaps some straw or dried flowers.

Taste: Very mildly sweet, roasted malt, caramel, bitter chocolate, light fruit-like acidity. Finishes with a mild bittersweetness. Alcohol is very well disguised. A fine palate of perfectly balanced pleasant flavors.

Feel: Medium-thick body with smooth mouthfeel, fine carbonation.

Overall: Definitely opens up a lot as it warms - aromas were very stifled at fridge temp. Recommend serving at cellar temp. An all-around winner - no surprises, just a very well-rounded smooth-drinking imperial stout.

Pours pitch black motor oil color with a massive 3 finger thick tan head that was full of active bubbles of all sizes that popped and shifted as the head slowly dissipated, leaving good spotty lacing and a layer on top.

Smells of burnt coffee, roasted grains, floral hops, charcoal, burnt wood, toffee, espresso, cocoa powder and everything that makes up a rich stout nose that’s full of chocolate malts and strong coffee notes. Very lovely to inhale, this hides the ABV completely.

Tastes as good as it smells but with more chocolate and caramel present in the flavor; it starts off with dark chocolate, caramel, toffee, burnt coffee, cocoa powder, then adds in some mild grapefruit, floral hops, espresso, vanilla, charcoal, burnt wood, burnt grains, earthy notes like peat moss and molasses. This bottle is about a year old and there is a boozy element like rum towards the end, but it mixes well with the burnt malts, cocoa and hop bitterness. There is some heat from the ABV, but it’s a mild burn that doesn’t have any negative flavor impact, just a warming feeling.

Mouthfeel is smooth and almost creamy with a heavy dense body that’s chewy, it has mild carbonation, a nice chocolatey/coffee sweetness, and a slightly bitter finish that trails off with nice charred notes and coffee grinds that somehow manage to come back less bitter and more sweet like the caramel circled back to say hello.

This has always been an extremely enjoyable beer to sip and savor, and although this is the first time I’ve reviewed it formally, I have been drinking this beer for a decade and have always thought it was an excellent stout. A high recommendation, go get some and enjoy it.
