North Coast Brewing Co. - Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout, poured into a Craftgeer snifter.

Look - Pours a thinner brown-black and settles black with a good sized soapy head. Sticky chunky lacing.

Smell - Cola, some chocolate and coffee, definite dark fruits.

Taste - Taste is malt with bitter coffee and just a touch of chocolate. A little thin but generally outstanding.

Mouthfeel - Thin but full-medium bodied. Rests dry and bitter. Medium carbonation. Good drinkability.

Overall - This is one of the pioneers of the style, and it's not lacking in flavor or complexity. Still, there are a better RIS out there now. As an intro to the style, this is a great place to start.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a tulip glass

A- Pours a dark roast coffee with a very slight amount of light coming through on the edges. As a high medium brown head that dissipates slowly to a thin ring.

S- Dark roasts, dark fruit, slight alcohol. I swear I'm getting some vanilla too even though it's not barrel aged.

T- Roast coffee, coffee acidity, light dark fruits, dark chocolate, and slight alcohol. A medium level of sweetness. Leaves a nice coffee acidity on the tongue.

M- A light-heavy mouthfeel for an imperial stout. A bit easier to drink than others I've had of this style.

O- A great lighter RIS. At 9% the alcohol is not overwhelming but the big roast and dark chocolate flavors are there. This is a great beer in that it is very easy to find as well as being all year and at a very reasonable price for a RIS.

A: Pours a fantastic black as night, coffee color with a rich brown cap of foam about 3/4 thick in my snifter glass. The look is so wonderful, absolutely no light passes thru glass.Thick clouds of foam cling to the walls of the glass.

S: Aroma is of rich coffee, roasty malts, nutty with hints of licorice.

T: First sip and POW tons of coffee, licorice, roasted malts... everything I expected to taste and in full abundant quantities. There is also a slight earthy taste almost floral hoppy.

M: Warming full bodied and luxurious feeling dancing on the pallet, slight chewy feel.

O: Definitely a drinker an excellent representation of the style.

A - Pours an opaque, deep brown-black with a 1/2 caramel head that dissipates relatively quickly. There is some lacing, but it is not very pronounced.

S - Toffe, burnt caramel, dark roasted coffee beans, the smell of a wheat field right before harvest.

T - Surprising taste of citrus on the first sip, which is not that present on subsequent sips. Wonderful dried wheat notes with a mild alcohol finish. Definitely not a sweet beer, but well balanced with some slight bitterness toward the end.

M - Strong carbonation on the tip of the tongue quickly turns into a creamy feel. On the more viscous side, but certainly not as thick as some in the same genre.

O - I wanted a rich, complex beer for this mid-November evening and this did the trick. While it's not the best Russian Imperial Stout that I have tasted, it is worth of its reputation and well worth trying. I'll probably buy this again in the future.

Notes: Poured from a 12 oz bottle. 4-pack of 12oz bought for $8.99 in Oregon.
