Bought this beast at world market. I'm pouring it into a chalice at 45 degrees F.

She pours as black as black can be. You know when you put it up to a light bulb to see the red hues... well there aren't any. Sexy, thick, and creamy head.

My smell is not the best but you smell like a spicy mocha or something close... maybe a little bit of anise.

First off... every flavor has that hint of alcohol but there is so much flavor it isn't a big deal.
Dry and woodsy... like spiced tree bark. Earthy and effervescent. It has a great... I'm not sure how to say this, but a dirty? taste to it. I really enjoy the lack of sweetness that I have had from all the stouts I have had this year.

Doesn't cling at all like you would think by pouring it out. But so flavorful that you just gotta sip it.

This stout is freaking awesome... All you can think when you are drinking it is "Damn, this is splendidly different!"

Served from the bottle into a stemmed globed glass

A- Poured black with a huge fluffy, ice cream like head, chocolate milk colored head, some of the most impressive glass coating lace ever. I am pretty shocked at the size of the head for such a high ABV beer, this beer looks spectacular though

S- Some big licorice, roasted malt, some dark fruits, and some alcohol. Pretty nice aroma, the alcohol overwhelms some of the other aroma notes.

T- Big roasty and bittersweet chocolate flavors, lots of dark fruit, lots of woody flavors, and prominent alcohol taste.

M- So smooth and creamy up front with a lots of alcohol warming and a very slight burn, low carbonation, a little sticky, bigger than medium bodied but does not drink as full-bodied as other RIS

O- This is a big stout that packs a punch and has some booziness, but at the same time is incredibly drinkable

Now that's what I'm talkin' about. This stuff is what it's all about. It pours as black as my ex-girlfriend's heart with a beautiful two finger head the color of the nougat inside of a three musketeers bar and leaves elaborate lacing inside the snifter that I poured it into. Smell is mainly coffee and chocolate. Mouthfeel is a satisying fullness without being thick. Taste is robust. A strong coffee taste dominates, but there is also roasted nuts, dark chocolate and being a high ABV, some alcohol on the finish. This is what a RIS should be, a standard of excellence.

The Beers of California

Freshness Date: None

A: Opaque black with a khaki head. Looks substantial in my snifter.

S: Strong notes of cocoa, espresso, brown sugar, and raisins. Great depth and complementing sweetness which really gives this brew a wonderful nose that really awakens the senses.

T: Leafy bitterness and dark bread add to the same characteristics found in the nose. The cocoa, espresso, brown sugar join hands with dark fruit which is mostly raisins and some plums all topped off with a warming alcohol finish.

M: Velvety smooth, warming alcohol, and ample carbonation. Overall medium mouthfeel which is appropriate but not quite excellent.

O: A classic stout which represents the style well. Great depth of flavor and complexity although lacking some of the nuances found in the upper echelon stouts.

Bought in a six pack in Boulder, CO

First off, this is what a dark beer ought to look like. The head is extremely velvety, and though it thins out throughout the drinking process, it always retains some and the lacing is beautiful.

The smell of dark, dark roasted malts pervades the entire fragance of this beer, and they are certainly tasty smelling malts.

The flavour of this beer is dominated primarily by the same malts prevalent in the nose and truly remind me of dark roast coffee. The flavour of alcohol is certainly also prevalent in this brew, albeit not so much so, that it is overpowering. Rather, it actually complements the coffee flavour

The mouthfeel is exactly as every beer ought to have. The water for this beer is certainly of high quality and is extremely soft on the palate.

A great beer, would certainly buy again

12oz bottle poured into my Duvel tulip.

Appearance: Almost black with a dense 1/2” head that recedes to thin cap. Nice lacing.

Smell: As expected for a RIS roasted malt, strong coffee, and chocolate.

Taste: The richness of the roast comes forward with all of the chocolate and coffee plus the added warmth provided by the ABV. Not really getting any other flavors other than the mocha.

Mouthfeel: Clean on the palate with the warmth of the alcohol and the bitterness combining at the finish.

Overall: Very good RIS, the alcohol is not completely masked; however, it is also not unpleasant and the alcoholic warmth adds to the flavor of the beer.
