This is certainly one of the best Stouts to come out of California--on par with Parabola and Big Bear Black Stout. Deceptively drinkable given the alcohol content, although I prefer my Stouts a bit thicker to the bite. The taste is sublime, with the slightest bit of chocolate aftertaste. A world class beer.

Bottle poured into pint glass

A: Half a finger head, with weak lacing. There doesn’t appear to be much carbonation at all. Vaguely translucent, giving off a subtle crimson glow. Looks like crude oil.

S: Roasted malt, chocolate, bitter coffee. A remote sweetness lurks somewhere in this layered aroma.

T: Initial malt flavor, maybe some caramel, coffee bean bitterness but well balanced. Might be some toffee. Has a transient sweetness possibly from some dark fruits, prunes? The hoppiness presents itself when allowed to mature on the tongue a bit.

M: Not as thick as I expected, very light carbonation. Not very dry, smooth with little after taste. A creamier character arrives as it approaches room temperature.

O: After engaging in some debauchery with old Rasputin, I can say I’m up for round two. This is an excellent stout for wintertime drinkin’. This was recommended to me by a rando in my local beer distributor, and I’m glad I took him up on it. A must try as far as imperial stouts are concerned. Until we meet again.

Appearance- Pitch black with a mocha head

Aroma- Heavy on the milk chocolate with slight coffee notes too.

Taste- Much more balanced between the chocolate and coffee than the nose lets on. Roasted barely/coffee noticeable at first then it leads into creamy chocolate in the finish.

Feel- On the thinner side for a imperial stout and a bit too creamy of a texture.

Overall- A very good imperial stout, but not quite as full bodied and full flavored as some other imperial stouts. Yet, this still has a lot going for it such as its balance between chocolate and coffee, its drinkability (no alcohol noticeable), and the price point ($9). (89/100)

I do not enjoy Stouts, but this is close to a perfect example of an Imperial Stout. Chocolate, Coffee, Nuttiness, and bitterness close to 70% Cocoa Dark Chocolate. Creamy feel in the mouth. It is smooth with a bite. If you enjoy Stouts this is for you. Try it with Oysters. If you are like me and do not like stouts, just eat the oysters.
