A: Nice dark brown, black with tan head

S: Coffee, Chocolatey with a malty rasiny overtone.

T: Very balanced flavor. Malty with some sweetness. Chocolate and coffee overtones stand out. Taste lingers on your tounge and then fades...wonderful smooth. Some dark fruit notes...

M: Smooth, not harsh at all. Not as heavy as I expected. Very well played...

O:Oh, my....if you are not a stout fan...try it. If you are you will not be dissapointed in this one. Not overly done in any area. Very drinkable and smoother than I expected.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter.

A: Pours a dark dark brown appearing black in the glass with a hefty 2.5 finger khaki head. Large bubbles make the head a little rocky as it fizzles away. No lacing. Light gets through about 1/2" of beer.

S: Dark chocolate, coffee and roasted malt. Some raisin and fig, hint of alcohol. Love the chocolatyness of this brew. Very robust.

T: Real dark and malty taste, heavy with chocolate and coffee. Leaves a real roasted malt taste in your mouth. A little hop makes an appearance at the end, but overall it remains very balanced.

M: Lighter on the palate than expected, fairly low in carbonation. Still a very smooth and drinkable beer with a well-hidden alcohol.

Overall a beer that never disappoints. A must try by any stout fan. One that got me into RIS. Twice the strength and twice the flavor of a Guinness.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter.

A: Deep, dark black with a sticky brown head. Lacing is exceptional.

S: Chocolate and bitter coffee, slightly milky.

T: Bitter chocolate and vanilla with notes of coffee. There's also a little bit of a woody taste to it. Warming alcohol punch. Very nice.

M: Slightly bitter with low carbonation. Little bit of alcohol heat.

O: Fantastic stout. This really hits the spot for when I'm in a stout mood. Would love to try the bourbon barrel aged version.

Ok so I had a filling done the other day, and the anesthetic had worn off later in the night. My tooth was slamming, and of course I had a fridge full of beers waiting to be drank. So I decided to drink the one with the highest ABV in there (minus the barley wine I am aging), which was old Rasputin. This review may be a little more brief than most of mine, but that's because i am doing on my iPad sitting in an airport from tape recorded notes.

Side poured with standard vigor from a bottle into a tulip glass.

Appearance - cool looking bottle, love the packaging. Pours a jet black with zero transparency, having a nice two finger mocha head that hangs around for some time and leaves excellent lacing almost through the entire drink.

Smell - Roasted and charred malts are the big boys, but it has dark fruits, coffee, and some chocolate hints as well. A little oak smell in there, and a nice accompaniment of booze to round it out!

Taste - matches the aroma almost exactly. The big roasted, charred malts get you and hold your palate, while the other favors and scents mingle in with them. Chocolate, oak, dark fruits, and booze all make an appearance. Excellent taste

Mouthfeel - Finishes creamy and thick, with a nice warming finish because of the booze level. Medium carbonation.

Overall - Highly recommended. I will absolutely buy and drink this again. I have already recommended it to people who have not had it yet. Very very good beer, I strongly suggest you go get some. Good value too.
