Bottle into standard pint.

No vintage or bottle date visible... I'll assume it's pretty fresh as I bought it from a store that recently opened...
I've had this beer lots of times, and I must say I prefer it with age-- this might be the freshest I've ever had it!

Anyway, getting on to actual beer-related notes;
Looks dark black with deep brownish tan legs. Nice dark brown head of two fingers-- thick and fluffy looking. Really nice.

The smell hits big chocolate malt with some sweet caramel and a giant roasty character. The flavor is much of the same, but it adds a bit of boozy warmth at the dry and smooth finish.

Body is full, thick, and creamy.

Overall-- this is a spectacular beer for $8 per 4-pack! I think it comes out better with a bit of age to help smooth it out a bit, but this entirely palatable and quite a pleasant sipper.

Poured into tulip glass:

A: just about pitch black, with the slightest of dark brown hues on the edges when held to light. Yields a pillowy brown head that leaves just a bit of lace as it settles.

S: brown sugar, semisweet chocolate, pleasant alcohol fumes, molasses. Very appealing.

T: vine fruit (as in a bold red wine), bitter chocolate, alcohol heat, all rounded out by a bold, dark coffee flavor that lingers. So good.

M: Rich and full, as it should be. Can get a bit hot after a while, but that's to be expected.

O: I already knew this, but taking the time to be critical reaffirms how much I love this beer. They're two different animals, but the only Russian Imperial that equals this is Samuel Smith's. This is the standard bearer for the style.

Motor oil opaque black with a two-finger nut brown head.

Aroma is molasses, licorice or anise, coffee and bready malt. Taste starts with a fairly assertive earthy bitterness that maintains throughout. Really roasty, slightly burnt, not smoked, plus dried dark fruit like prunes and figs.

Mouthfeel is full bodied, highly viscous, and creamy.

This is a complex, roasty, bitter and delicous brew, and is incredible for the $7.99 per four pack price point.
