Motor oil opaque black with a two-finger nut brown head.

Aroma is molasses, licorice or anise, coffee and bready malt. Taste starts with a fairly assertive earthy bitterness that maintains throughout. Really roasty, slightly burnt, not smoked, plus dried dark fruit like prunes and figs.

Mouthfeel is full bodied, highly viscous, and creamy.

This is a complex, roasty, bitter and delicous brew, and is incredible for the $7.99 per four pack price point.

A: Pours an amazing near-black-dark-brown, with a frothy chocolate tan head and beautiful lacing.

S: Major notes are chocolate and booze, coffee and malt too.

T: From the first sip, it is fabulous. A huge taste of chocolate up front combined with roasted malts. Almost like a shake. It ends with subtle flavors of dark fruit and alcohol, along with a tad bit of coffee.
(11/11) '09 Vintage: Alcohol has mellowed out, incredibly smooth flavors. A touch of black licorice comes in, while bittersweet chocolate comes into play.

M: Nice and creamy, but more carbonation than I expected, it works, though. Alcohol masked incredibly well.

D: It's fantastic, the only warning would be the ABV. This beer is an absolute pleasure to drink.
(11/11) '09 Vintage: Outrageously drinkable with a couple years on it. Throw a 4-pack in your cellar, you won't regret it (wish I put in more).

I have enjoyed this world class stout for a while. Not sure why I never reviewed, but figured now was as good of a time as any. It is the epitome of a stout in the color, pour, head. Dark in the bottom, lighter on top. full of chocolate and coffe in the nose and that translates into the taste. Add in caramel, lots of citrus hops to the chocolate and coffee. The hops almost make me pucker at times. love how easy this is to drink, cant make out the 9.0 abv til it hits me.

Poured out of a bottle into a standard ale glass: Dense, impenetrable, pitch-black with a foamy mocha head that lasted a while (although not quite as long as some other reviewers have noted--but many of those had the advantage of drinking on-tap).

Strong notes of licorice and spice--but two of the myriad flavors that spike your palate. Overall, this is a knock-out beer, exploding with flavor, and pretty intense with its 9%+ alcohol content. Hard to imagine a beer gourmond not loving this beer unless you're not keen on stouts. Few rivals to this baby, a real delight.
